Eow 94 The sky train express
EOW 94 The Skytrain Express
the not-to-distant future
The fuel crisis has culminated in the crash of the airline industry. A new form of intercontinental travel has been invented. It uses NO Fossil fuel. it transformes the face of the landscape.. as the tracks crisscross the continent.
NOTE: This is an environment NOT an IDW. its about what the world looks like, not how spiffy and shiny you can make a futuristic train. Although the train is definately part of it.
what powers the train?
what are the tracks made of?
how does it stay in the sky?

I'm glad you decided to stick with this idea. I'll probably sketch again but not put anything up.

Yeah, man! Where's the mid-western farm? I was out on location all week getting ideas.
September 8th, 2008 #5
so the sky train can go over the midwest..... it's my hope that you can stir anything that is inspiring you into the mix
thats the freedom of EOW. which is so different from a real conceptjob.
I can't believe you guys didn't realize the midwest farm was a joke... it was THE most prosaic thing I could think of on the spurr of the moment

did I specify that it's here on earth?
maybe the sky is pink... with green puffy clouds.. as lond as theres a train and tracks in it ..I don't care

Everybody's joking about this midwestern farm, but I'd like to know how many of us could draw it without reference. Maybe is prosaic but it's not automatically easy too. The problem is that it's a difficult and time-consuming theme: what if the farm is too mid- and not enough western? Or just western? Or even far western? What makes it typical? Are there photo references of such a generic subject?
Some ChoW ago (the Plague Doctor I think) I wanted to draw a typical Venice environment and I thought it was easy just because I've been there so many times and I've seen so many "typical" Venice palaces and houses. With much disappointment I needed to use photos as reference just to learn to draw a single window, to make it believable.
Chaos you know I will draw anything you ask us to draw (midwestern farms apart and if I have time to do it).
Ok, I stop ranting and I start sketching...

I am so in.
Lol about the midwestern farm. Next topic then, why not?
September 8th, 2008 #13
just for you Hideyoshi... I swallow my plans and give you what you ask for...
Did you see that the winners thread is all up to date and shiny?
September 8th, 2008 #14
oh noez, don't say that! Now I feel uneasy... O_O
I'd be up for the farm as well and any other non-sci-fi topic after this!

Aww man this should have been a calaboration with IDW...
September 8th, 2008 #16
Oh cool... I think this one will have to bring me back to finally finish something on these threads.
I'm going to try my best!
September 8th, 2008 #17
I got my drawing tablet today so I'm going to try this out, appologies in advance for the outcome but it sounds like a fun topic. I have quite a funky idea in mind also.
I have looked through all the EOW's I could find and Chaosrocks, all I can say really is keep up the good work on the topics! Varied, interesting and fun, what more can one ask for?
September 8th, 2008 #18Hideyoshi: I am so in.
But actually, that means the rest of us have to step our games way up, so I am glad to see you here.
Even though I put more emphasis on improving with each piece I do, I DO plan on getting good enough to win one of these weeklies some day, and that will only happen if I can "keep on keep'in on". So I too, am in.
And for the record, I WOULD like to do the farm topic at some point in the future, i think it would be fun and challenging. Most of you might have seen the IDW "Dice" topic, seems very easy but was tricky to come up with something different, and even though we only had a couple people show up it was a good learning experience for me.
ok now I will shut-up, off to draw!

Yeah this is going to have to be industrial designy...but a cool topic notheless. i...might be in.

How about a railway track above a city? Is it ok? Or does the train need to fly?

Well, since everyone else is uploading sketches..
Bit unsure of the direction to push this one into. I'm torn between a 'mature' sci-fi version of the concept with a cityscape etc, and a 'british', low budget/ twee one. The 'british' version is far more my style, but im not sure if i should do something a bit more mainstream to force myself out of my comfort zone or stick to what i know and do something that i could relate to more.
Its been a while since i've done something that was 'me', so i am leaning towards the twee one atm..i dont know if it would make the best image from a professional POV though. I got so lost in the last EOW that i didnt know what to do with myself at times, and its a worry that will happen again if i go for the 'mature' version.

Why 'sky train', do you mean it actually needs to be suspended in the atmosphere? I mean this is the not-too-distant future, so fuel costs don't measure up to the cost of putting trains way up there using bullet-proof glass tubes and super-strong metal towers extending 4 miles upwards, right?
I just think it would make much more sense if they were 100 metres above the ground instead. If it was a more distant future, I'd go way up there.

Here's mine so far. Sorry for pretty much breaking every rule but I got going and it just kind of happened. I'm getting the idea that it's an example of too much time spent with not quite enough skill, but hey I've got to learn. I will just replace this image with the final one when it's done.
I took a more humorous approach with the whole idea because being my first piece of digital art with my new Wacom (love it so much) I just really wanted to have fun.
Here's my explination:
The Lightening-Bolt Sky Train has revolutionised travel. Due to the recent over consumption of fossil fules the now poluted atmosphere is rife with super-storms, "what a nuisance" you say? Not with Volteck Industries who have found the answer!. Using great Pylon-stations equipped with the latest in mass acceleration/deceleration technology we are able to "Couple" trains with bolts of lightening. Each train is equipped with the latest eletromanipulative hardware allowing for pin-point control and our drivers are well "trained".
September 10th, 2008 #29
time is relative. what's a couple thousand years.. more or less
put it where ever in the sky you like
it's a "sky train"
suspended from the clouds by "sky hooks"
tracks held up by trained butterflys
powered by megatherium dust
whatever..I never said you couldn't make shit up
