    Sarah Palin - censorship?

It seems that as a mayor in Alaska, Palin ruffled quite a few feathers.

    From this article:

...Ms. Palin approached the town librarian about the possibility of banning some books...

Anne Kilkenny, a Democrat who said she attended every City Council meeting in Ms. Palin’s first year in office, said Ms. Palin brought up the idea of banning some books at one meeting. “They were somehow morally or socially objectionable to her,” Ms. Kilkenny said.

The librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, pledged to “resist all efforts at censorship,” Ms. Kilkenny recalled. Ms. Palin fired Ms. Emmons shortly after taking office but changed course after residents made a strong show of support. Ms. Emmons, who left her job and Wasilla a couple of years later, declined to comment for this article.
    also;
Ms. Palin also upended the town’s traditional ways with a surprise edict: No employee was to talk to the news media without her permission.
That scares the shit out of me, and I don't live in America... aside from her being anti-contraception and wanting to push creationism into classrooms, also. :0

She sure gives a great speech though.

"Astronomy offers an aesthetic indulgence not duplicated in any other field. This is not an academic or hypothetical attraction and should require no apologies, for the beauty to be found in the skies has been universally appreciated for unrecorded centuries."

Despite early reports, it seems Palin, like most evangelicals, is not anti-contraception, although she does oppose anything but abstinence-only sex education (and we can see how well that's worked out). So I guess that's one less reason to be scared of her. That still leaves about 10,000 other reasons, though.

    From here:

Palin has been clear throughout her career that abortion is "absolutely unacceptable" in every context, even if the conception was due to rape or incest...

...Ms. Palin opposes the use of birth control, as well sexual health education classes for teens. She is firmly for abstinence being the only form of sexual education taught in schools.
Information on her current stance on the "teach the dedbate" issue is contradictory, but still worrying. From here:

As a candidate for governor, Sarah Palin called for teaching creationism alongside evolution in public schools. But after Alaska voters elected her, Palin, now Republican John McCain's presidential running mate, kept her campaign pledge to not push the idea in the schools....

When asked during a televised debate in 2006 about evolution and creationism, Palin said, according to the Anchorage Daily News: "Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of information. Healthy debate is so important, and it's so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both."
That article also states that she had a 'hands off' attitude while governor and didn't mix her beliefs with the state, despite firing the previously mentioned librarian. (plus she mentioned it in 2006)

So, being from Alaska and wanting creationism in classrooms....that totally means she'd give fair treatment to all creationism, right? Like the Tlingit's Raven?

That's exactly what I've been thinking. Abstinence only education seems to be just as effective as the D.A.R.E. program was way back when, only at least the D.A.R.E. program lacked other information to provide, there is no safe drug use.

My mom thinks I should love this woman because she is pro firearms, but I think that's the only thing we have in common. The book banning efforts settle it...she's down right scary.

True that. But then, the GOP has literally been spoon feeding The Daily Show with material. Jaw dropping incredible.

Well, this is sad to hear. I honestly hadn't heard much about her, but I was hoping for something... umm... well, better...

I guess this is why I really could never live in the States. The republicans are way, way out there for me. Even the democrats are too right wing.

Oh man, that Daily Show video is great...there's just nothing better than having video of someone saying one thing, and then another of them saying the exact opposite. It just exposes how much of a puppet they really are. Someone at work was saying they thought the best way to have an election would be to totally do away with campaigns and just publish a booklet listing their stance on issues, recent voting record, credentials, and maybe some places to look up more info if you're so inclined. So much of the stuff flying around about ALL of the candidates is just opinions attempting to sway the opinions of those watching without the need for actual analysis.

The problem is there is a certain part of America that is completely in love with her. I don't get it. I just don't get it.

My biggest objection with her is her Anti-abbortion views, this issue here is but a drop in an ever growing ocean for me. (Funny that she's pro-Guns, but pro-Life; someone said on 8 Out of 10 Cats that it's like being a Vet and Butcher at the same time)

I'm amazed that 'Pro-Life' can still have such strong support in a sophisticated Western civilisation, during the 21st century. It's such a ham-fisted and ill-concieved set of arguments, that essentially try to limit Women's liberties. (As George Carlin said, "Pro-life isn't Pro-life, it's Anti-women") I guess believing in Fairies can sway your judgement.

So for this Sarah Palin to choose whether her daughter will have the child or not (Taking crucial life decisions for her, just to prove a political point), and then to further fuck her life up by marrying her off at 17... Christ that's moronic. She deserves the backlash that undeniably would have come, no-one wants to be forced into a relationship, but at such a vulnerable age...I'm really disgusted with it.

Is there anything Sarah Palin does that shocks me? No
Am I scared of the possibility that Old McCain will win and drop dead and in turn, she will be running te country? Yes
Do I suggest all sane people left in this country jump out the nearest window? Definitely.

Man, everyone at the RNC this week reminded me of those dinosaur aliens from that made-for-TV miniseries "V"... Especially Cindy McCain.
I'm just waiting for someone to tear off the masks and point the way to the feeding chambers.

Like MM said, if McCain gets elected and then dies in office, its gonna be none too sweet
for those of us in this country who have a somewhat different take on things.
