SUPER Stylised Challenge - September 2008 - Frankenstein's Monster / Science Mishap
Welcome to the SUPER Stylised Monthly Challenge – Sponsored by 3DTotal.com and 2DArtist Magazine. Please post all images & questions in this thread.
So what is this challenge all about?
Each month we will select a title for the Super Stylised Challenge, and we'll post some images for you to use as reference. The title is there to be interpreted as and how you wish. All you have to do then is to think up your concept, paint it, and create a final 2D image of this in your own way!
This regular monthly challenge is designed to bring in some great content for 2DArtist Magazine – in the form of final images from the Top Ten and Making Ofs from the top 3 winners – as well as some great prizes and exposure just for you!
What are we looking for?
Funny and humorous entries which interpret the title of the Super Stylised Challenge however you see fit. We’re pretty much leaving everything open for your interpretation and stylisation!! All we ask is that the title of the Super Stylised Challange is instantly recognisable in your final image! All you have to do then is to render your stylised/abstract/cartoon masterpiece and you’re away!
What are the timeframes and requirements?
The rules are pretty laid back: please submit 1 x 2D Final Image. If you want to have a background or include some graphical elements or text on your image, it's entirely up to you. Image posts should be around 800 pixels across, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured in 2DArtist Magazine and we'd like the winner's image to be used as the article cover!
There will be 1 challenge per month, with the deadline being the end of the month GMT. A 'VOTING' thread will be created at the end of the month.
For a valid entry, you must make sure your final image is posted in both the WIP thread before the end of the month - 31st September 11:59PM GMT - and then in the 'VOTING' thread before the 8th October 2008. Voting will take place from the 8th October to the 15th October 2008, when the winners will be announced!
We require the top 3 winners to submit 'Making Of' overview articles that will be shown on either 3DTotal or in 2DArtist Magazine ; these need to show the stages of your creation, different elements and some brief explanation text of why, and how, you did what you did. We will format this into some nice-looking pages to give you some great exposure, and us some quality content. This will serve as some great exposure for you which, along with your prizes, is a pretty cool incentive to get involved!
Everyone has to post their FINAL image in the WIP thread before the end of the month deadline (31st September 11:59PM GMT), as well as their WIPs during the month. You then have to post it (exactly the same final image) again in the VOTING thread. This means there is a very clear deadline: no-one can work after the end of the month and the VOTING thread still exists as before, as this is a nice clean thread with final images only which is used for the judging!
Posting Works in Progress
Each challenge will have one thread that starts with this info and the brief at the top. This is where all entrants post all WIPs, give feedback, and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month!
Please don't start any new threads – just reply to this one already set up!
1st Place Any 3 items from the 3DTotal Shop. We sell lots of items these days, such as our book , Design Studio Press books, textureCDs, Shorts DVDs, lots of training DVDs, and 12 month subscriptions to 2DArtist Magazine and 2DArtist Magazine .
Any 2 items from the 3DTotal Shop.
Any 1 item from the 3DTotal Shop.
We do unfortunately have to limit prizes to 1 book per winner per challenge, due to high postage costs for heavier items. Please note that we cannot offer the 3D Printed models as prizes!
Everyone who took part can cast a vote of their top 3 in order, and the 3DTotal/2DArtist team will also cast their votes. We will award 3pts for a 1st place vote, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Then we will add them up and ship out your prizes!
*This month we have chosen Frankenstein's Monster / Science Mishap!
Here is a selection of Images from a simple Google search to give you some good references for this month’s brief!
Please don't start new threads: all design sketches, WIPs, feedback should go in this thread! Final Images should be posted in the 'VOTING' thread, which will be created at the end of the month.

Nice Murdok, Your conveying alot of action there, I like it. Good Initial start.
I find it easier if I apply traditional methods first before working in photoshop, so here's my initial sketch of "Monster Cell"

Great starts everyone - can't wait to see more! The theme is more open this time than usual, as we're going for a Frankenstein or a Science Mishap theme, so however your inventive, creative minds want to interpret this brief is cool with us. So enjoy!
Any questions please feel free to email me at email@example.com

September 10th, 2008 #14
Looking good, MurdokX, I love the angle - reminds me of some Terry Gilliam film shots.
I didn't have time to do a lot with my picture but I added some highlights and a little texture.

Thought I'd try this out - here's my first sketch. I'll probably try a mixture of illustrator and photoshop to bring it to life.

yay, cool theme. i planned out my scene in 3d first and here's my first sketch over...
September 11th, 2008 #18
rosatron - excellent. I love it.
only thing I think might make it work a bit better - try opening your frame some more. as it stands right now the scene as a whole seem a bit claustrophobic and "squashed".

Cool stuff, guys!
Here's what mine looks like at the moment.

Worked some more on fleshing the sketch out. So far, I've used illustrator to do this. Any ideas or suggestions? I plan on adding some color, and various other effects in photoshop.
September 12th, 2008 #21
And the next step - colorizing, getting the shadows a little better, and refining the image....
September 12th, 2008 #22
Okay, here's about as far as I feel I can go with this one...took the illustrator artwork into photoshop and added some lighting effects with subtle shadows. Any feedback is appreciated!

Holy smoke, look... the original monster sketch made by crazy Dr Mateo!
Last night I was scribbling and I scribbled this little thing. I found the inspiration in old movies such as original 'Addams Family' from fifties or something between that I found on youtube.com.
BTW, watch this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lClaQ...eature=related
There is a funny dancing sequence of Wednsday.
So, I decided to place this invention in the late 30's, when crazy Dr Frankenstein [german imigrant in USA - my version], invented this dude called Frank. He's wearing too big pants, I like fashion of those years [I'm really fascinated in retro art and, also, vintage times]. I'm going to paint it in my favourite style, like old books fro children was colored.

Quick and silly Q, does it have to be CG? or 90% etc CG? Just I've been doing alot of traditional media which I'm really digging, and I'm not sure what kind of % CG mine will end up... There will be comput-ation involved but not 90%ish
Even if it doesn't count I might just do up another frank just for shits and giggles

Hey everyone. These entries look fantastic so far. I was digging the topic and wanted to try my hand at it so here goes the WIP. I was going for a Bride of Frankenstein kind of idea. An crits would be welcomed and most appreciated!
As a side note, and a question of slight stupidity, do the entries have to be in color? I feel rather foolish for asking, but wanted to ask nonetheless.
