I just made a digital painting program for the iPhone. May I get some opinions?

I love sketching on the go, and the idea of having my canvas be a little block of electronics that sits in my pocket was thrilling. So what did I do? I made an app that would let me do this.

It's called Gesture, and it's for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Gesture uses the popular technique of sampling a color from a photograph and then using that color for your brush stroke as the basis of its function. This allows you to create quick and meaningful sketches of the world around you. Be as tight or loose as you like, and Gesture will take care of the rest.

I put up a little demo at http://stone.com/Gesture, and I'd LOVE to hear any questions, comments, or ideas about it.

In addition to being a great way to make these images, Gesture also provides a very good way to solidify color observational skills (it helps reduce images into more basic blocks, so you can see how light falls off, how reflected light is working, etc…)

Here is what Gesture can do:

    - Zoom in for detail work
    - Variable brush size
    - Toggle background image visibility
    - Play back your painting like a movie (what the demo shows)
    - Unlimited undo

Here is what Gesture will do in a future version:

    - We're recording all your movements in a vector format, so exporting to a computer and printing at 360ppi on your Epson at ANY size you want will become a reality

    - Once exported off your computer, your painting as a movie will be uploadable to YouTube/Vimeo/Any other way you want to share it.

I can't wait to hear what you all think!

I'm not quite getting how this works. From what you've described it seems like you take a picture of an object, then scribble all over the screen and wherever you scribble it samples the color on the underlying image to draw...which to me seems like an overblown manual filter in the end.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, I just don't quite understand how your app works and the demo on the link didn't help any as there was no indication of where the colors were coming from.

It doesn't really seem like a tool for making art, but more of a photo manipulation tool. Maybe add some hue/saturation/brightness sliders so colors can be picked that way, and maybe some opacity options on the brush.

Great Idea, when its something like Nintendo DS Colors. Maybe one can make use of the Multitouch function. Now the IPhone just needs pressure Sensitivity
