Sprite Animation Weekly #6 - Jump!
High gas prices aside, we've made it to another Monday. Going to head on back to character animations this week.
Week 6 - Jump!
The challenge this week is to make a jump animation for a character. The character should be original, but all of the other specifics are up to you. No size limit, no constraints. Feel free to use what you learned in the dust challenge to give the animation extra kick if you want.

Wow, that's pretty cool. I've never much played with the Onion Skin option in GraphicsGale... I think I'll be trying that out soon.
-My work can be found at my local directory thread.

no joke, this one's really hard and really time consuming. uh... I have my sprite made.. and some keyframes ideated... I'll try to get it done, but no promises.

Nice link, I've seen that guys sprites before, he has an awesome sword swinging one as well. Also, these challenges are really variable in terms of difficulty. You can simply do a simplistic 2 frame jump animation (standing + in air) like you see in Super Mario Bros. or Megaman.
Anyway, did mine off and on throughout the day. Came out ok.

Nice one Sinix
Not 100% happy with it, might change some stuff.
And the animation speed is ok in mozilla but really weird in ie.

talked it over with some of my animator friends, and apparently the reason I was finding this one too difficult is because I chose a retardedly hard standing pose to start out with.... so, for now, this is just a placeholder. I hope to finish it soon.

Aw man, I'm gonna miss this one since I only just discovered these threads (oh shush, CA is a big place, darnit!). I've loved seeing the work in the previous weeks so far and hope this keeps up! Sinix and Lake, your stuffs is awesome!

Sinix - Nice! Always a fan of your polish and I like the secondary action on the hair and skirt. Nice timing too, has a cool floaty feel to it hehe.
flashrabbit - Wow that's crazy! Really nicely animated and I agree with Sinix on the style, really nice different look. Nice job!
Lake - Yea, that is a pretty rough pose to start with... it does look good so far, the spring in the cape and the knees is working well. Keep workin at it! It'll come out well in the end I bet
Well, I've missed 2 of these activities so far (I'll get on redoing them asap!), but I'm back with another attempt hehe. I got this to where it is around 2:30 am this morning, but I wanted to wait until I got up to post it--see it with fresh eyes and all that. Haven't made any changes, and there's a lot about it I don't really like (could have inbetweened in a lot of places, my color choices were pretty bad, could have worked the timing a bit better, sizing issues, etc.) but I'm happy to a degree with it hehe.
I hope this counts as a jump lol, wanted to try something a bit different. I guess it's like a jetpack-boost-jump?

Onir: well, it's definitely a jump it's a bit hard to read, I had to watch for a while till I realized he "bows", but I like the legs and the move is clearly a nice and dynamic jump well, he should slow down a bit when he's high...
I miss this slow down in Lake's entry too, but I like that jump too, even in its sketchy state, the figure jumps believably
nice work everyone, especially Sinix whose works never cease to amaze me
(btw I wished to make something for the cruise round, I had an idea, I tried to draw and I gave up more than an hour later. I need some decent program for pixelwork, I think, the ones I have drive me crazy. maybe I write one for myself, no big deal. it would be definitely faster than draw a sprite for these activities)

Sinix convinced me to take a stab
Awesome work everyone!!
sorry, no transparency, no coloring...
it's playing slower than it is in Image Ready...dunno why. :/

Thanks for the crits guys I'll definitely keep your advice in mind (these activities are great times to experiment, right? hehe).
Lake - ooh wow yea that one is definitely hard as well the more finished one looks great though! some nice subtle squashing/stretching on the figure and the cape adds some nice secondary snap to the whole thing.
Hideyoshi - nice! I like the hat alot, really nice touch; the jump seems a bit even in terms of its timing, but the hat helps offset that a bit. will look forward to whatcha put out next time!
