You are doing the right thing. Keep drawing from reference. And remember that the best reference is from life. It seems like you are struggling with your media a bit. I would recommend spending some time with just a pencil and paper outside drawing the world around you as well as doing reference paintings on the computer. You are on the right track, keep it up.

I like your cartoon stuff, reminds me of those childrens' illustrations I used to read as a kid. Your hellboy two frame study is still not right, double check the heights of the characters, and lay down thicker colors. I see a lot of brownish tones in the original reference that don't seem to show up in your study.

Lean the basics first, then create characters.
