    Redfrog's Sketchbook (sketch a day)

    Hey Folks,

Been posting for a while on Cgcsociety and thought i'd start a sketchbook here. Been mucking around with some new stylistic techniques lately and might use this thread to post my sketch experiments.

    Hope you like!

Here's some of my experiments with a new stylistic technique. I like it because it enables me to get a character sketch down in very quick time. Kind of like the illustrative version of shorthand.

Great style and concepts here Redfrog. I can tell you are either a fan or play Warhammer 40k. This stuff feels just like the Gamesworkshop products and characters.

I like what you have so far, will be great to see more. Always good to see individual styles, what program are you using here for it. Keep it up.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

I draw directly into photoshop using a wacom and then just use the airbrush and eraser. I find it enables me to get an iamge down really quickly. I can then use a similar technique to work up a more detailed image.

Here is an example of this with some Spawn fan art i did...

(I am also a big fan of the warhammer art though have never played it, EBrown)

Thanks for the great comments, folks!!

Showdownmetal - I use photoshop with standard brushes and the eraser tool. I look into doing a step by step real soon.

Here's one i did a few weeks ago...

omg your style is so sick. Are you planning on painting any of these?
I am also a fan of blocking things out then erasing it can make some really interesting images.
Keep this up for sure ^_^

M4ze - Thanks for the kind words. Hadn't concsidered painting them to be honest as i am a little pressed time constraint wise, but its definitely something i may look at in the future.

showdownmetal - I've included a quick step by step process for my latest sketch. To give you a rough idea. this sort of sketch takes abou 15minutes. Hope this helps!

BoiModl - thanks very much for the great compliment

Lateman - I love your description of my new style. Marvel with a touch of urban. I've always loved comics and lately i have really been inspired by a lot of urban and graf stuff. Great call and great compliment! Thanks!

Here's my latest sketch. Its a very black coffee inspired noir piece. Have included a 5 step process pic as well.

After watching The golden Army on the weekend I started reading the strange Places graphic novel. Mignola is a genius!

Here's my humble tribute to Mike Mignola's Hellboy. Hope i've done him justice Mr Mignola!

Realy love the ink style look. and the process shots are a treat! thanks for that.

The greatest reward for me is when people look at my stuff and feel inspired enough to help me learn by harsh critiques, they will never fall on deaf or defensive ears and will be applied post haste! thanks in advance!

Wow man, I have to hand it to you, your B&W skills rock. I LOVE your Spawn image.

I think I like your B&W version of your Hellboy image over your color version though. I'd like to see you do more color images though.

You've got good stuff! Keep it up!

    Check out my sketchbook.

Thanks very much for the kind words guys. This B/W style is a new technique that i've been experimenting with and its enabled me to get down really quick sketches and layouts in 10-15 minutes which can be very handy for me.

Reject-D: I definitely hear what you're saying. Line quality most certainly suffers with this technique. I have spent a lot of time in past years with very clean line work and whilst it has a very defined and clean aesthetic to it i am currently enjoying the freedom that this more rushed and messy style offers. It is certainly a technique that needs some refinement, and i hope to be able to in the end find a balance between the cleaner and messy styles.

I guess in my industry it comes down to what you can produce in very quick time that will still look good.

Thanks heaps for the feedback, guys, and i hope you can keep it coming and i can develop some of my technques more.

Bit of sketching practice this morning...

Here's today's scribbles. Sorry, I've been a bit slack over the last coupla days!
Tried doing the looser style over a sketch. Didn't feel as organic or as free. have to trie and find a happy medium...
