Post your before --> and after conceptart.org artwork

This thread is about showing off our progress we're all proud of. Post multiple drawings, but try to keep it in one post. Update as necessary.

Post a piece of your artwork before conceptart.org or near when you first started posting here, then a more recent piece or two that you are proud of to show your progress...maybe kind people will share critiques and we could help each other improve even further too, who knows...

Here's mine, i may update as i see necessary:

There are a few retrospective threads floating around in the murky depths of ca but I'll bite on this one Good timing too since even though I've been on ca for over 2 years, it's 2 years this month I started my SB. I'll start counting time from that point I guess.

Sketches from '06 years ago (in all seriousness, even though they're far from complete that's the best I could do with imagined faces and anatomy):

    Sketches now (2009):

Finished pieces from '06 (the first one was never technically finished except I guess for the main figure's face and the sky/clouds which I thought was done):

Awesome progress. it's like night and day, i've seen your sketchbook several times but didn't realise how far you've come. Great work.

I'll post some comparisons soon, i didn't want to post right away because i didn't want it to seem like i made the thread just so i could show off. Plus i'm at work at the moment and should probably do that when i get home...

Great thread idea! It's so encouraging to look at your own progress and improvements. Honestly, us artists don't do it enough!

Jason, I'm in awe at your improvement. Seriously, you deserve one hell of a pat on the back! I only hope I can make such great progress in only 2 years.

I'm going to bed now, but I'll post some of mine tomorrow. Then I will hopefully be done with a painting I've been working on (for way too long), so I can compare it with my older painty work.

Looking forward to see more pics from others, bring it!

Well, just too put down the bars, I started out here over 3 years ago already *shudder* that's from the first post on my SB:
    Attachment 435951
(Awesome! I recall that monster drawing FROM MEMORY! Still damn proud of that.)

And my first digital, with Photoshop:
    Attachment 435956

Now, my output isn't as much of an improvement as other guys but at least I'm still in the game, seen a lot of people giving up on the way already. Whatever, this is the stuff I'm cranking out now:

    Attachment 435954

And, of course the digis nowadays, only that I'm stuck with GIMP to do the trick. But it's all the same, right?

    Attachment 435955

Hmmm had I slacked around less than this would be my 2-year mark also, I guess. But I got life-experience

4.5 years ago or so, right around the time I started posting here

Post your before --> and after conceptart.org artwork

    about half a year ago
the resemblance to previous pic is accidental, I haven't seen it in years when I painted the other one.
must've had the mental image stuck in my brain somewhere..

I should have painted a lot more.

here's a couple others that are more recent

First 2 are some more recent ones, last is from... Feb of 2004 I think. Didn't improve quite as much as I'd wanted... (@Jason in the post below, 4 years is a really long time!)

Funny, I was digging around my old hard drive and this thread comes up. Well, i found out that I actually used to draw worse than i do now, didn't think that was actually possible. Here's a few head/environment comparisions. Laugh it up.

Circa 2006, before i started lurking here.. (I can't believe it was that recent):

Hmm... T-dome 5: "Redesign a Classic Game Character" circa mid-2003. It was the first time I'd used Painter. Somehow I got it stuck on the eraser "brush" and proceeded to do the entire painting with it (not. fun).

My color learning got put on hold to get mah edumahkashun in comics. Too much time spent furiously putting out pages of pencils and sometimes inks. Then the Chair wouldn't let me take the color class b/c he thought I knew everything the coloring prof would have taught me. :/ Oh well, I make up for it now!

I guess I can post speedpaintings. All done between hour and two hours. I think what also improved is variety of subjects and I finally started doing more detailed finished art.

Been around here for 4 years or so now. Cant find any work from before I got here, but can find one of my first pieces here and my more recent:

Before (sorta). Too reliant on references, color understanding not as great. Stiff boring ass pose.

Now. More painterly and loose, more movement and well, This one diddent take me long at all, compared to the before which probably took me a good week or so back then.

Also, conceptart.org did not just change my way of thinking towards art, but also my attitude. Looking back, I think I was an immature little, hey look at me I can copy a photo, arent I great kinda guy. While now I feel im more down to earth and a lot more mature with the way I am here and in RL. Thanks CA!

WOW, people! Some vast improvements being shown in this excellent thread!

I guess I gotta do this, too. First piece is from 2002. Pencil and a background via Photoshop. Second, my second attempt to work mostly in Photoshop.

cool topic. Sadly I don't have any of my non-digital work on my computer. I know it's around on a zip drive somewhere.

I found CA around June 2005. Up until that point I used oils and didn't really believe in the quality of digital programs. That changed over the course of the summer and by December I got a Mac for Christmas and started playing around.

Here's my first attempt at Painter. Then one of my first paintings (of the band the Go! Team, done more in my editorial style), then the piece that I'm currently working on this week. (Still unfinished.)

    Sooo, 3 years so far.

I tried to pick a few pieces that more or less indicated what I would have done if I could and put them back to back.
