Great sketchbook! Your figure sketches and anatomical studies are totally inspiring. What anatomy books do you mostly use?

portraits are looking good but maybe you have to try to convey more form from the very first line drawing..just a thought though

    Forearm Study

rokushoxxx : Right on the money !! I am working on it to get better. Thanks
Baudolino : Thanks a lot !!!! I use Micheal Hampton to understand his approach. Couple it up with Human Anatomy for Artists + muscle images in google search and to understand the placements, I use google body as well.
andres333 : Yea I agree. That is why I started doing quick sketches just for lineart... long way to go with portraits
    glutamat : Thank you !!

Thank you all of you for your comments...
you guys have no idea how much it helps me to keep going strong !!

These environments studies are really well planned and executed. Nice anatomy lessons you are working on, for portraits I think you draw the iris bigger than they are & watch the proportions.
    Cheers

Hey there, nice stuff ya got going on here, especially the latest portraits. One thing I noticed thou, on the b/w female portrait and some other ones, your actual face seems to be a bit angled different on the head itself...if that makes any sense...like the face perspective is going somewhere else than the head perspective..but I'm just probably babbling anyway.

Heyo Thanks for stopping by on my sketchbook. And wow I see lots of hard work here, all the anatomy studies, amazing! The latest landscape works blowing me away, especially the very last 2 (the tree and the mountains) they look so crisp and clean. Keep on going!

Hey, fantastic update! The quick portrait sketches and of course the snowy mountain painting are awesome. And what a huge amount of anatomy studies!!! Can't wait for the next update.

And great input from COLD, but i must ask... why the darker tone near the cavity/edge of the box in the shadow side. Wont that area(just above the contact shadow) be having the maximum amount of bounce light ??? The dark tone there doesn't seem to make sense/fit in !

Anyway... keep painting dude... inspiring stuff
I guess some of the darkness of the cast shadows get reflected back onto the object

Baudolino, smallergod, adelenta, rokushoxxx, forestdino, sony : Thanks a lot guys !!

ancientdrake : Yea. Totally agree. In fact I realized the exact same thing a day after I painted it. I tend to not notice such things when I am into the painting. Must solve it !! Thanks anyway man !

So I've not been updating regularly as I was before. I kinda lost my rhythm, but it has lot of other reasons. I had to do some environment paintings (finished) for portfolio...
but now I shall be getting back to anatomy studies hopefully with a steady routine as usual !!

Here is the painting I have been working on past 3 days.

    @ twell : Thanks man !

My sketchbook doesnt have the word slacker for nothing. Been on a slow rut for a while now.
Anyway, I have also been lazy in taking the snaps of the sketches that I have been making, hence the big gap.

Here are some anatomy sketches as usual.

I feel so 'bleh' now !!
Does anyone even read this ?

So I deal with the leg anatomy... and move on to full body figure drawing.
Still need to get the hang of simple forms.

    Sure

I like how you analysed the muscles of the arm on a photo and then drew it.. looks like a good way to actually remember the stuff.

The environments are awesome! Maybe also try to do some with a non-horizontal-horizon/more diagonal lines (argh.. do you know what I mean?), to get some more dynamic compositions?

Anyway, great stuff in here, keep it up!

Your anatomy studies are epic. especially the photo with the muscles painted over it. Makes my dizzy tracking all those forearm muscles

Looking a few pages back, it's crazy how much you've learned! The figure sketches have a good construction, and great job with making the environments look both photorealistic and have vivid colors. Those figure studies also have great forms, it shows you're focusing on the structure. You're certainly on the right track, keep at it!

Trailblazer : Thanks for the support Yea, I've been kinda slacking off too. Trying to get a job, but I guess I need to work on making a much better portfolio for that to be remotely possible.

Immortal Cintiq : Yea, makes me dizzy too tracking those muscles. Thanks anyway

    smuli, Cojac: Thanks

Lyraina : Yea, it does help. And yea, I do need to try some dynamic composition. In fact, need to do some quick studies. Been a while

Baudolino : Hmmm, thanks . I've kinda stopped focusing on anatomy now. I know enough of the muscles for now. What I really need to get the hang of is FIGURE DRAWING. I think you have a pretty good approach to it, and I need to learn it. There is something about my drawing style, that I can't seem to do it. I've been trying to do simple cylinder and box approach, but my lines are all over the place Any tips, suggestion ?

I am to lazy to upload my sketches right now, got couple of sheets to snap.
For now, I shall post this :

Trying to get started on painting clothed figures, as well as using color.
I would greatly appreciate if anyone can give me some critique and advice on blocking in colors.
I am trying to figure out how to do a painting with opaque color blocks and still get some details through.

When it comes to blocking in colors, I find it useful to squint my eyes to generalize the values, that is, the see past the details. Comparing the photo of RDJ to your study, I'd say you're putting too much light! The shadows on the picture are much darker. Don't be afraid to color pick if you're not sure of where to start, you might be surprised at what you find! Finally, don't be afraid of using big brushes!

...is my advice, but I'm very new to digital rendering myself, haha. Good luck, love the studies so far!

Great texture, compo and expression on the red portrait! In the clothed figure study, the values on the vest and trousers are a bit brighter than on the reference. Although the reference has patterns on those parts, try to ignore them at first and see the general colors by squinting your eyes. Also, the neck collar looks just a tad too tight and trouser legs wide at the ends, but good start!
