    Exodyssey

I had been waiting for this book ever since I set my eyes on the artwork that it had. I love their quick speedpaintings of spacecrafts and landscapes. Their strokes and designs are simply amazing. Steambot Studio's EXODYSSEY was a must buy for me. And I did. I did some spaceships sketches inspired by the book.

    The Joker

My college library had got Alex Ross' book MYTHOLOGY... and I had to be the first one to go through it. The artwork was simply stunning and I had this sudden urge to draw something. What other character than Joker himself. The painting done by Alex Ross is amazing, and I tried my hand in drawing it.

Sketch took about few hours of slow detailing

    Then colored in PS (rough)

Heh, can't go wrong with Hogarth & Ross... there's nothing wrong in drawing other people's work, because you can really learn a lot from it. Eventually their styles will burn themselves into your brain (if you continue to study their work) and those influences will help you develop your own style.

But for now, keep learning proper anatomy and hone your drafting skills, you're well on your way to becoming a splendid artist!

    Some more...

Some more portraits and spaceships. I really need to work more on the form... most of them look flat. Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

This one is again ANDREW JONES inspired.

This one is a storyboard I had to do for my class assignment. Very basic. I didn't like it much really.

    Rant and DUMP !!!

Hey guys. Been a long time again since I updated my sketchbook. I have been slacking off too much.

Its just that I keep getting discouraged with my artworks. It really depresses me to know that I am not in the level I was hoping I would be. I am still struggling to draw and its not natural for me to just sit and sketch, and I have to make strong effort to make myself draw. Its like it has become more of a task. Because of that I keep having second thoughts about concept art. I doubt myself for being capable of being an artist and whether I am really up to it. It came to a point where I was considering leaving it all and giving up. But I see people in CA who have really improved so much and attained excellent skills.... I just feel I have to do it.

But I barely see improvement in mine. I know that I have to practice constantly to improve. But sometimes i just feel that I am not doing the right things. Or just not doing it right. Maybe the portraits that I am drawing might be alright, but I might not be gaining anything from it. I am truly lost and confused.

I would appreciate some help if anyone out there could offer some guidance.

Below is a dump of all the work that I have done within these months. Its very few. And I should be drawing more. Some are portrait sketches, some are sketches I do according to the music I listen to. Comments would be appreciated !!

    Thank you.

    Vilppu - Anatomy

Here is another update. I felt the need to really improve my anatomy skills. They really don't have proper form and action. SO I thought I would follows some Vilppu videos that I have. I must say it helped a lot and my understanding of anatomy has become better in just a few hours of practice. Here is the upper arm study sketches...

Hell yeah! studies like that is where it's at!

keep it up! - but also get some Bammes pics on eye construction and study those.
Another thing would be to focus more on the overall proportions of the face and get those down first, cool trick to do that would be copying Loomis's basic head construction drawings.
That thing is gold and it's not "only for noobs", pro's copy that stuff to keep in shape all the time.

@Vatsel : Thanks man. I'll try to get my hands on Bammes. Yea. I have been working on the head construction. Loomis' technique of blocking in through a sphere has helped me a lot to understand its form. I have practice a lot with that. SO anyway, thanks for the suggestion. Appreciate it

@Noukah : I assume you are referring to the spaceship designs ?? Thanks. Although i feel the 'discipline' is really not something to be envious of. There is much work to be done... Thanks for your comment.

So here is another update after a very very long time. If only i didn't slack off so much, my improvement would have been exponential, but because of my inconsistency, i keep going up and down. *sigh*

Nice studies! The black and white lips look superb! The colors on the environments look convincing, great sense of light on the chair pic but you're using grey, black and white a lot which IMO easily gives a kind of dirty look in a colored picture. In the tree on a field painting, the clouds have white and light grey when you could've focused on the subtle shifts of color more to make it look more interesting. On the tree, seems like you've painted highlights with white and shadows with black so they both look like they should have more saturation. So try to be careful when picking colors and check out this tutorial by LINRAN

I think the construction of the faces could still get lot more confident and it seems like you aren't using a clear system. I think the method taught by Loomis is a very good one for getting the basic form down and placing the features. Seems like you know of it already but I don't see those ghost lines in your head sketches so try to use it more. Also, draw lots of heads from photos with the same system.

Hope I wasn't too harsh and some of this is helpful. Keep them coming!

@ Smuli : Thanks for your comment. And it wasn't harsh at all. In fact, i'll be happier if you were more brutal with the critique I realized that about the tree painting too, i have already started implementing it when i paint. And thanks for the link to the tutorial, seems very helpful and i'll check it out soon.

About the head. I understand what you mean. I have been using Loomis on and off. And many other references as well as photos. I do not get why i am still struggling so much. If you notice my sketchbook, the improvement is very less. I feel that my approach or study of the face and even the figure are misdirected. I don't know how though. I'm still struggling and find it very hard to draw from my imagination still. Thanks for your comment anyway.

Here are some of the sketches i did during 2-3 weeks of this month. The book on figure drawing from Micheal Hampton helped a lot.

    Hey Fenixx,

Thanks for your comments in my sketchbook! Your work is honestly fantastic, it's coming along in leaps and bounds. I really like all your studies - they show a solid understanding, and I think it'll help you to have that knowledge on hand. I wish I had your patience!

I really like your environments too. One crit I'd have of the tree painting is that some of colours seem a little artificial. I'm not sure you'd actually see them in nature, but maybe that's just me. I also feel that there isn't muc sense of distance - I'd expect the further-away fields and especially the mountains to be alot lighter and less defined. 'Drawing and Painting Landscapes - Problems and Solutions' by Trudy Fiend is a really good read, I've found (I'm beginning to sound like an advert for it, lol.)

Great work though, if you keep improving at the rate you have already I'll bet you'll be a super-pro in no time Eager to see more!

Hey man thanks for stopping by! I can not help you a lot, because it looks like you are on a good way and you do good studies to improve your faces. I still have to learn a lot for myself but I guess if you do some more portraits from reference, doublecheck your proportions. For example your last piece does not exactly look human. You should always check several distances. For example the distance between the eyes is right but the distance between eyes and ears is too small. This is because his eyes are way too big. Also his jaw is not right, probably because his mouth is too big and too far down.

Well nevertheless there are a lot of different faces, so maybe not everything I say is correct. Work hard and you'll be fine, I like your stuff.

Hi Fenixx, thanks for your support. I'm happy to see you stuff, especially the form study of human figure, they are great. About the portraits, I think you should concentrate on the form of the head, the shape of the shadow & light and the relationship between them.

I hope those I mention help you. Keep working hard
