    wow, nice work xD
It's really interesting to see the picture developing

Now, for crit...I think the tube person's (...) head is kinda small, or the palm (and the arm) is too big? With things right now, it seems the arm itself is very long.

And for the soldiers (?) I think the lower part is kinda bigger compared to the upper part.. but maybe it's your intention after all?

Still, Good job! I want to see more!

wow! that looks a lot better!
mmh, criticism - like trefle said there is something strange about the tube person's proportions (or perhaps the angle we look at it), i would also like to see clearer that he is inside the tube, some glass reflections could look nice. the cropping/composition is unfortunately at the upper end - you should wether crop somewhere through the tube's top part or include it fully, atm it looks squished in. i'd prefer cropping it away since the design isn't too original and the metal doesn't reflect the interesting light situation at all yet.
keep it up! i look forward to see where you take this piece!

201 || the self-portrait is great, equally great attention to the planes in your face, which I appreciate highly the attention to art fundamentals in work. Great, i lack the words to comparitively come up with a crit for this one, for once. Nice work.

207 || compelling theme going here and the loose application of the color is fabulous and lends itself to the intrigue of the subject matter in the composition. Great things im seeing the development here. Keep pushing those lighting sources to strong, dramatic ones that in itself highlights the drama and intensity you love to illustrate.

    Happy sketching!

    Quick sketch. Sucks!

    Asatira-Thx
Trefle-Thx, Im trying some foreshortening, but its not going to well.
kat- Yeah, trying foreshortening but it hasn't turned out too well yet. Thx for the crits and the suggestions, I'll give them a shot.
figuremeout- Thx, I'll definitely keep it up.

Hah, why did you randomly switch tube guy's hand? But nice quick sketches, the strokes look a bit too excess, but I think you're getting there. If you keep at it I'm sure you'll find a way to use each stroke efficiantly. Sorry I haven't commented in awhile, I thought I did, I know I checked on your sketchbook, but I guess I got distracted and thought I did. Glad you seem to be catching up with stuff.

looks good eric. Try to mass the tones more so the shapes will read better.

Here are two tuts that I have found useful. I went back to these time after time and each time I understand them a bit more.

I think you got the form down really well for the last figure. My only crit, and this is my opinion and going off of what I think "works" (and we all know how off that can be), is you seem to do a lot of paintings in a splotchy/dabby way. Do you think laying a larger area of color for the base colors and then doing what you do for the rest of the painting could work? Again, just my opinion and to be taken with a lot of salt.

From a quick browse, your portrait paintings stand out very much above your imagination work - and you're probably saying, yes they are from reference and more time was spent on them.

I would guess that you do not think the same way about describing forms from your head as you do from reference, and that is very expected. To me, this means that a lot more reference work is in store - I would keep analyzing things that exist, and in doing that you will find more confident ways to work. If you need some mountains for the back of a landscape from your head, look up some mountains and let them guide you! take some guess work out of it untill you are more confident.

Dont know if that helps, but Im trying

Phong- Thx for the crits, I'll be using these tutorials a lot.
    Asatira- Thx, I'll do that.
Jakers- Thx, I'll remember to do that from now on when I have trouble with pieces from imagination.

    Crappy pieces, quickies.

Sung-Jae- Actually, Alex was at my place when he called, I was there, but he wouldn't let us talk to you. Hehe! Not really, but I was there when he talked to you. I'll keep it up. I've got to be the best I can be.

Been reading a book called ALLA PRIMA by Richard Schmidt. Fascinating book by this great painter. I've been trying to follow the guidelines for what to look for before you even paint, and the guidelines for when you start painting as well. So I redid one of the studies I posted last night whilst following the steps Schmidt discusses. I'm so much happier with this one than before.

woha - that's a lot of new pics since i checked last time!
as already pointed out some of them are overly blotchy and thus a bit unvoluminous. but that last face seems like a huge painterly step ahead! it's not fair to tell us you discovered some interesting new guidelines without explaining *what* they are! wanna know! the colours are really soft and nice (but the eyes are off).

You have some nice portraits here, really adore the little kid with such a bright expression. Teeth are hard.

Lots of new pics since I last checked. Glad to see you trying a new technique. The latest version of the portrait is much improved over the previous study. I think the mouth is a lot better on the kid because you're focusing on the overall shapes (ie, the gums and general white area of the teeth), instead of doing individual pieces.

The brown haired girl's face in profile looked really good, starting to get nice and smooth there. I like the little kid's face, although his neck look's a bit small, but I'm sure that's how it actually looks. Can't wait to see it done.

Heres a new study Im working on. The first is my first try where I forgot to follow the forms of the figure, so I went over it all and and thats where Im at in the second.

shalite- Thx, they're only hard because your not familiar with drawing them yet. Keep it up.
Asatira- Thx, I've been trying to simplify things the best I could, and I think its turning out well.
FearSelf- Thx, yeah the kids neck is really small. But that is the way it looks in the photo.

I think doing these will help with the imagination aspect of conception.

Hey! Those are my nonsense doodles! Except bigger. Haha, aren't they fun?
In the first study I liked the rawness of the colors. I don't know if that makes sense, but maybe could you keep those nice colors?

good to see you thumbnailing! i have to get into that too. and you picked a nice one to work on, too. in the thumbnail the hand was even more extreme, i think it would be good if you kept that, you know asymmetry is more interesting bal bla bla. and the current background doesn't really make him pop.
did you abandon the tube guy? i would have loved to see some more progress on him. sometimes doing something more finished offers other insights that just speedies.

    Whoa, lots of pics.

The last pic was nice, I can't wait to see what it'll be!
The sketches were awesome! I wonder how can you do that? I would love to try some xP
The child's neck still kinda...small....and the grin's kinda weird, but maybe that's a fact I should blame to the child? >D

That some of the critiques I can afford. The rest were great, but as katinki noted, maybe you can try finishing the works? The result will be awesomeness, I bet.
Hopefully that helps, keep up the good work!

Study, I mainly focused on getting the right values in to create a believable form. Wasn't too concerned about getting the colors exact. I'm really happy with the way it turned out though.

kat- Thx. Yeah, the hand was huge in the sketch, but I see so many people doing that, and I thought it was too cliche to continue with it. As for the tube guy, I will finish him, I just want to improve a little more and go back to him. Finished pieces are coming! Promise!
    Trefle- Thx. You bet.
FearSelf- Thx, more to come for sure. And I really want to finish this one.

Thats all at the moment. Im staying up tonight to get studies in since I feel I'm not progressing. So more to come tonight. Just keep watching! Later!

Good work, kiddo. Keep it up and do not give up.

Quick question, do you work with painting mediums? Or are you strictly digital?

When it came to my art, I went my own way and did not follow the trends.-Frank Frazetta

van- I work with traditional as well, but I really want to get the hang of digital. But I will be posting some traditional paintings in here from my classwork and maybe even some I do on my free time. Thx for the boost.
