heya try concentrating on certain subject or few different subjects such as heads for example, draw the lines understand the construction the planes and the relation between features of the head and keep practicing until you feel your getting better at it, what helps me is find my weaknesses and study the certain subject until I feel I have done a progress and then leave it for a day or two while learning a different subject and then come back to it with a fresh mind and keep practicing.

    Practice makes perfect!

Thanks for the input Danny. I am, in fact, already concentrating harder on learning head anatomy than I have on any previous subject, because I feel that it's something I really need to be a lot better at. I've been practicing every day for the past couple of weeks and I've made quite a bit of progress, but I figured I would wait and upload a bunch of my studies all at once when I've had enough of the subject for a while. I don't see a lot of sense in updating my sketchbook every day with a bunch of mediocre studies that nobody will really care much about.

Yesterday I was in a park and wiped out while running through a mud puddle. Here's a quick portrait of the water-spraying thing that probably created that puddle, drawn from memory a few hours later. It's nothing fancy, but I like how it turned out. I think the colours in my pictures consistently turn out better when I put them in right at the beginning, so I'm trying to get more comfortable working that way.

Hi chriskot, if you want to add more space to your latest greenhouse digital i would suggest working little more on giving more clear hints how the skeleton structure of greenhouse recedes in space towards horizon, also adding more air percpective could do the trick as well

btw: how does that guy in helmet drink???__

    DonovanGonzalez: Thanks man!

Nettle Mountain: Thanks for the crit! I'm not 100% clear on how you suggest I should clarify the skeletal structure though. I tried to avoid using fog or anything like that to create a better sense of depth inside of the tunnel because I wanted to make it look more sterile than the air outside. I don't intend on working on that image anymore, but I'm still interested in what you meant for future reference.
As for the guy, I am aware that there is really no way for him to drink or smoke through that helmet. That was sort of intentional. The character idea was just something silly that my little brother threw at me and I thought the unusable glass and cigarette in his hand was a mildly amusing way of making him look more casual.

    ReaperKing: Thank you!

    dleoblack: Thanks!

Alright, I haven't managed to do a lot of drawing this past week but here's a new DSG (#1573). The subject is "The Great Robot Judge". I kind of rushed it at the end. I'm not too pleased with that hand or the gavel. The hand is just wrong and they both seem to be a bit on the small side. I also think I made the sleeve material way too thick. I'm happy with the colours though.

Great sketchbook! You can definitely see progress from the first page up through where you are now.

I'm absolutely loving the piece on the top of this page - the way you've handled the texture/lighting thus far is really nice. The tree on the left looks especially cool.

    Keep up the great work!

    Thank you very much intrinsik!

Alright, here's a sample of the practice that I've been doing to learn human head drawing over the last month. I think I'm getting better at getting the basic structure right (not to mention a whole lot faster), so now I need to start working on putting more variety and emotion in there. Expect another update like this when I get tired of that for a while.

In the month since my last post I have upgraded my tablet from a 4'' x 6'' Graphire4 to a nice, big 12.8'' x 8'' Intuos4 and over the past few days I've been doing a few self-portraits to prepare for November 1st. Here's the latest one.

Nice updates. Watch out for your contrast, it's a bit too high in most of your paintings. Other than that, good work here.

    Thanks for the input cgaddict!

Here's my contribution for Self-Portrait Day 2010. The likeness isn't perfect, but I spent more than enough time on it already. Maybe I'll adjust it later.

Edit: Made a few adjustments. Updated picture below.
