    ONWARD, TO PAGE 3!

The grass in the tutorial still looks a lot better than mine, and it also teaches you how to add nice little flowers, which I've put off learning until another day.

    TODAY'S PICTURES:

The first image here is another quick doodle I did in "Colors!" for the iPod Touch. A rainforest-y scene this time. Brutally rough, since the screen is only about three times as big as the finger I painted it with. I'm still looking for something that I can use as a stylus to circumvent the 'big fingers' problem.

The second image is a bit of grayscale doodling in Photoshop, something I've been doing a bunch of over the past couple of days and will upload more of later.

The last little picture is a potential candidate for a new avatar, because I feel like my current one needs to be retired soon. Certain things about it are beginning to bug me, which seems like as good a sign as any that a change is in order.

    Thanks a lot Marsch!

Here is another quick geometric 2-point perspective exercise, and what is probably the final version of my next avatar (unless people prefer the older version or have any final criticisms).

So I FINALLY got a bunch of traditional pencil stuff scanned in to my computer and will now proceed to post some (with more coming later). The first two pictures were my first drawings of 2009 (The first page was done on January 1st, and the second was done on the following day). The third picture is a spacefiller for the school magazine that I did back in High School. I keep meaning to do an abstract landscape like that again.

Also, 33 quick portraits of CA members.

    400th post!

Here's a smiling crab-monster (while I will probably colour later) and a few rough alien embryos I'm deciding between for part of C.O.W. #148. I think I'm probably going to go with the bluish one at the bottom, since I have a pretty good idea for it (although I really like the one on the left too).

An old-ish page of alien concepts (I detailed the first creature on page #1 of my sketchbook), and a hamburger in zero gravity.

I may suck at 3D modeling, but your Blender stuff is looking good so far. Plus, your studies and Pixel art are also worth checking out.

    Thanks F.S.!

Here's something quick I just whipped up with Blender's 'sculpt' tool. I was going to use my new-found knowledge of particle weight painting to give him eyebrows and some razor stubble, but I wasn't sure what I would've done with it at the sides of his head. I'll probably come up with something later.

    Thanks Verehin!

Here's another piece of old line art with some new colour on top. I didn't exactly put much effort into it, but I think it turned out okay considering the time I spent on it. I could probably get it to look twice as good with another half-hour of work, but I'm not really feeling up to it right now.

I re-watched Whit Brachna's video on masks and tried applying the knowledge to a simple cloudy sky picture. Probably about a half-hour or so of work.

I also just finished downloading Andrew Jones' thumbnail demo, but I haven't gotten around to watching it out yet. I'm sure it will be both enjoyable and informative.

Here's something a little more abstract. Probably somehow inspired by all of the H. P. Lovecraft I've been reading recently.

After taking a marginal stint away from lurking these forums, and the speed of life picked up and moved faster than my time to check out and make art...

...I found some time to hop back into the sketchbooks.
Man, your free-range, out of your brain sketches and finished pixel stuff is really inspiring. The fish, the brains, the tech, it's all really cool.

    I dig it.

And I applaud your efforts to tackle life drawing stuff too, the portraits really look clean and polished, you've got a span of underlying talent that comes into play in your work, be it your comfort zone or not.

bookmarked your 'book, hope you keep posting!

Thanks a lot Wiggins! Very much appreciated!

Today, I've been expanding on the sketch of the fish-man from that page a few posts up. Not sure if I'll bother going any further with it.

    Thanks jimmy'z!

I just decided to take that quick self-portrait sketch I did along with the other 32 CA portraits and finish it up a bit. I'm relatively happy with the results. Come to think of it, I can't even remember the last time I did a coloured drawing from life. This may be a first.

    Fun stuff chriskot

Just looked through your section. Fun stuff you have going on. Like the surreal look and feel to your art. Fun character stuff also. Keep mixing up the surreal with the real and they can really play well off of each other. Anyways it looks like you are having fun and keep it going!

    Thanks!

I've been doing a bit more pixel art again recently. Having not done much in a while, I was beginning to feel a bit out of practice. I thought I'd try a working with a limited palette, because it adds a fun sort of strategy to the work. Here are some little tank-like vehicles using only black and two shades of red. I produced about a dozen, as well as various pieces which I could probably stick together to make more, but I'm only posting a few favourites (most of the rest are slight variations or look more like RC cars anyway). I'd like to do a few more later. Either that or something similar like yellow planes, blue ships or green mechs. Maybe even purple submarines or orange blimps. Any suggestions?

...On another note, I took advantage of the weekend sale and downloaded Whit Brachna's two environmental speedpaint videos. Excellent stuff. I'll probably post some of my attempts to apply the knowledge soon.

    Thanks again L.F.!

So I was trying out the brushes that came with Brachna's speed environments download. VERY useful. I should definitely stop using the regular circle brushes for everything. I'm going to get a lot of use out of these new ones. Anyway, I made a simple little island. It would've been a bit more elaborate, but I let my layers get too disorganized to expand on it easily. Whoops.

    Here's a W.I.P.

The mutant crab isn't nearly ridiculous enough yet. It needs at least another half-dozen visible appendages before I'm going to start on the details.

    Thank you Monotony!

Here's another piece for that "Draw other members" thread. This one is of Yor. This one gave me a harder time than the previous ones. I'm still displeased by a few parts (the right eye is too small, for example), but I think it turned out pretty well overall after the colours and everything were added.

Nice book Chriskot. I especially like the pencil stuff back in late June - #64. I always struggle with pushing values and those little sketches of yours really pop off the screen with their great value range. It helps me to see that done right. Thanks brother.
