    Mae's Sketchbook

Edit 6 nov 2012: I suspended this thread at the end of 2011, with the intention of starting a brand new one. In the end I just stopped posting here, and always felt a bit sorry for it. I have a lot to catch up, a lot of new material to share, and probably a lot of useful advice and pointers that I have been missing. So I thought I might as well start from where I finished off.

    Old Presentation:

Hello, my name is Mae, actually usually my work covers all sorts of genres, but I thought that here I would concentrate mainly on my more erotic illustration. I thought it would be nice to start out with sharing some very loose sketches (most of these are done in a couple of minutes..sometimes less), the ones I use to quickly work out what could work and what not, to be taken to a more detailed and complete form. I have plenty of these, so they are in no real order, and I will add on as I go (or as I scan the older stuff). Any comment or feedback welcome, thank you for checking them out!
    Mae

    welcome here!
well, not much to say, I like your more or less stylized work, but my favourite is the first one. I like the face. I hope you will share some more pics where the expression on the face adds much to the sexy body...

thank you...actually that is interesting, I am focusing lately on the action, but you may be right, there is nothing better than an expressive face.
Ah, I just noticed that attachments are preferred, I'll try and edit my post.

In the meantime, as faces go, I have this scanned and ready!
    cheers

thank you, the intention would be to try to post on a daily basis, or at least quite frequently. But I doubt I'll manage to keep it up!

@ muzzoid: yes, some things I do are life drawings. Actually one of the best experiences I had was doing a workshop where there was a model who held very dynamic poses just for a few seconds, and one had to capture the essence of her movement or body expression. Anyway in some cases, that's exactly what I try to convey here with the "quicker" sketches.
and as full body goes, here is one from the onryo series.

@ Lateman, Dan Valkar, FightingSeraph : thank you! that certainly encourages me to dig up some more stuff to show here! I certainly will later on...

I love the angular, elegant look of your figures. They remind me of Klimpt, Schiele, people like that. Do you paint/ink/colour any of them to completion? I really like your style, I think they'ld make great paintings.

I wouldn't have said any of them were explicitly erotic - except maybe "pull2". You grab a load of erotic photography and render it into your style. I'm sure that you can find erotic photography on the internet. If you want erotic, I'ld say exaggerate, look for the most humourous direction you can go in and go right to the edge of that humour and stop just short, or else go really explicit, bring it right to the edge of explicitness and the boundaries of taste and stop just short. Eroticism implies a kind of tension, a lean towards excitement that could easily be something else? Or maybe I'm just rambling.

Keep up the good work, I'm subscribing.

Donalfall, you certainly guessed my references, I have always admired the Viennese painters, I used to have both Klimt's and Schiele's posters up in my room. Actually some of the stuff in my sketchbook (the real one, made of paper) I haven't scanned or posted yet are mildly more erotic, so more of that coming soon, but in a way I see what you mean. In fact it's the hardest thing to do, find one's own personal twist on the genre (on any genre). After all eroticism is mostly in the mind (whilst a drawn nipple is just a circle, it's the semantics you assign to the circle). And that's exactly the purpose of this sketchbook, sharing my findings and receiving opinions.
As for fully painted pictures, yes I do take some to that stage. In fact I do lots of quick sketches then choose what go on to the second round.
I'll post now a pic done with markers (tria, tombow etc), in the onryo series.
    later!

Now, "mae.jpg" (the most recent one) is hot. Very... sultry or something. Keep experimenting, we'll keep watching with interest.

@ bakatron: thank you! That's exactly what I try to do.
@ Autumnal Dream: well, I'm doing my best to keep it up, which for me is no small feat, I assure you. I hope to find some time in the next days to do some more detailed stuff, but I can't promise anything. Anyway sooner or later I will post some fully "fleshed out" pics. There are loads of older works I could post, but the spirit of this sketchbook is sharing drawings as I go.
@ donalfall: cheers! that's interesting, to see what strikes a chord and what not.

    Anyway, today's random stuff

I totally agree. nice combination... there's coldness in that look, but the whole picture is hot, the expression on the face, the hair, the mild (I couldn't find a better word, sorry) nudity and that beautiful and noble pose of the hand works together, creating a balanced and very appealing picture. I love this combo. that's the type I wish to create one day... not loud, but makes an impact, beautiful... one of my big favourites and the whole topic is just for me, I knew it from the start
I dig the colored ones, they're more (sometimes totally) finished than the pencil sketches and it gave them some extra power well, there are times when strong and clean lines are needed (the babe with the gun) and pencil sketches have their place too.

edit: well, I'm aware that the praised pic in #12 is really sketchy, it would be even better with cleaner, tidier lines. but it doesn't diminish its values

thank you both shinin and fightingseraph, it's actually quite fun just adding a little bit of colour to the sketches, and it's refreshing doing something by just picking up a marker. It's less precise, you can make a muck of it (but who cares, they are just sketches)

For instance, yesterday I was colouring in this next post of mine out in the garden, and a gust of wind turned the page which hit the tombow in my hand. Ehm, I then tidied it up in photoshop....

    back later with more stuff

nice sketches, i like your style though i prefer the sketches with the smooth lines instead of the straight lines. And when you add those shadows it makes te sketch like a 1000times better!

    something different

Thank you Angry Filipino...it's interesting to see how tastes vary from one to another. Anyway I promise I'll put up more erotic stuff, in the meantime I'm posting something different, some of my commercial stuff, as I thought that in someway it had a connection with some of my work on display here. (plus it's more in the "finished" vein, which could be a change)

she's lovely too she has much charm. she's a Cinderella-like character to me. "it's me... simply beautiful"
I like most of your works, angular or not, agressive or innocent I like variety, though I have my taste too, of course, I'm not digging the most hardcore ones and I prefer nipples and a nice face (I mean the girl is nice, cool or kind)

Another elaboration, but it's still at a very initial stage, I'll probably play around with things, change something, add etc.
The good thing that in the meantime, characters, settings, storylines and general imagery are springing to mind. And references I can look up, both visual and plotwise.
