    Q&A.. Why do you draw?

So this will be alittle Q&A thread I hope with no flaming or bad language.

The question is: "Why do you draw?"

Do you draw to make a living? because you're bored? because you feel you suck at everything else?

My answer is; I don't. I've temporarely given up because I've lost faith in everything. (temporarely) (And because I feel I suck at everything else )

    You're turn!

I draw because it soothes. I draw because it makes the worlds in my head touchable. I draw because I'm arrogant enough to think I got something to tell, that might have an influence on someone one day.

Being so young and losing faith in your own abilities before you've even started to really fuck with what your mind and hands can do just seems such a waste of effort, even if it's only a temporary thing... Keep a sense of humor, sprout, and it'll make crawling through the mud a lot funnier...especially when it starts to pile up in your shorts/panties...

Because I see things in my head and it's like an itch and the only way to scratch is to draw it.

That said, I can encourage or discourage those pictures from popping into my head. I've certainly gone big chunks of my life without drawing much.

I was once on the receiving end of a critique so savagely nasty, I marched straight out of class to the office and changed my major (sketchbook).

To show what is really going on inside my head. My heart is pure and half my mind, that woud make 33.3% not so good(if you know what I mean). So I use pictures for now. When I am able to use words well, watch out. And "faith" is not real. It is a word used by religions to create some alternate universes where after this life we will all live eternally in fire or light, controling masses for a group conscience of "good" in humanity, and to give individuals something greater than solitude in their lives.

Because a picture is worth a thousand words, because one image can say something you may be afraid of or just cant put across in any other way

Because without something to do with my hands i get bored pretty fast

Because my head is full of ideas which need a voice

Because one day i want to fill a leatherbound book full of nightmares and leave it somewhere to mess with someones head

Because it feels good, because i feel guilty if i dont and depressed if i stop

because i love to learn and push myself

because i dont want to spend my life living in the same boring town doing the same boring job forever

    Because im competetive

and last, but no means least- for the lulz :3

    Because it's a constant challenge.

I'm amused by the "no bad language" comment....and Ilaekae's response. I think when I start a thread, I'm going to demand no misspelled words.

Because it feels very rewarding when I am able to portray worlds in my mind onto a medium. Of course, I can't do it accurately due to my skill level but I'm hoping one day I will.

I actually find it helps me think when I’m trying to sort out a work related problem.

It also stops me picking my nose.

Because its simply fun and I love it.

Also because I absolutely love the feeling of improving.. When I look back a month or 2 and see how much worse I was.. It just makes me feel great. I started playing guitar 5 years ago.. I can still remember struggling to play "7 nation army" by the White Stripes.. And i mean struggling until my fingertips were raw. Now 5 years later I look back at that with such a sense of accomplishment when I realize how far I have come. I hope to do that with art. I wish I had gotten alot more serious alot sooner.. but shit who cares I just turned 18. oo ya and I draw cause I wanna be able to make KeWL IlluztraTionzzz!!!! Haha but seriously.. I dont wanna have an old boring job like everyone else in my family.. Sure Ill do something boring at first if I have to.. but in the end If I could be an Illustrator, freelance or whatever, and get paid to see MY illustrations on trading cards, books, magazines, games, whatver... that will truly be heaven to me. I honestly cant think of anything that would make me more happy in my life.. that and a supermodel wife but hey I dont wanna ask for too much.

Always done it, and so far I haven't been kicked out onto the streets and told to get a job. Now I look forward to another 3 years, at Uni, to do nothing but paint. Yay.

Yeah, those ditch digging jobs are getting few and far between these days. Everyone's just getting cheap imported ditches from China.

Very true.. Im actually curious about this.. Is being an illustrator a full time job? I mean if your a freelancer.. do you have a "day job" thats maybe non art related?

Yes, if you're good enough and are great businessman/woman or have a great agent, it will be a full-time job. Conversely, if you are just getting into it, have suddenly fallen on hard times, or just like doing other things...it can be part-time. Just to be clear though: Being a freelancer means being self-employed. Illustrators can be self-employed, or employees of a company. Also, "making a living" as defined by artist guilds will mean that it's your primary income.

Probably because of some masochistic monster inside my brain that forces me to become good at drawing.

Because you are drawn to be a channel for something greater than yourself.
To not work through the muck and share it - that is the only sin I can think of.

Hopefully this idea that you're not good enough or whatever, which seems to remain persistent in all of us, is only but a call for excellence. Push through resistance and suck as hard as you can. It will only make you better.

Honestly? erm, I'm not really sure. I guess it has something to do with the fact that I have a wide range of interests and passions in life. Art allows me to use the knowledge I've gained in many things and collate them into some meaningful form of existence to share with others. That is as close as I can get to explaining it.

    Whats more funner than drawing?
And god my head is like full of ideas, questions, theories everything
art is the best way to express that
When your stressed and having a hard time you just sit down and take a piece of paper and start drawings, 5mins into it your absloutley lost you forget about all your troubles and yours in this whole new world with your, character, creature, enviro. Sometimes i spend hours just making up a story for my character, live through their pain and joy theirs falls and their sucesses.
Really to answer to your problem all i can say is
you just gotta love it, get addicted and obssessed about it so that you cant go a day without drawing. To do that you need to make it fun for yourself and want it.
So just do that and you'll realize why everyone in this forum draws
