I'm all up on that... can't wait to have a little Dan in my room.

By the way Aaron, that was some great editing. Was the music your track, too?

The song is Gettysburg by Ratatat. I guess one of the guys from the band is a childhood friend of Dan's or something. Oh, and Youtube compressed it horribly... you should pick up the real version at your local music shop or Amazon or wherever.

I don't have an exact release date. I've edited about 9 hours of footage but I get pulled aside to work on other videos so it's hard to predict.

Glad someone noticed the editing Youtube makes everything look horrible but I try.

Wow. Did he just re-create his digital painting for the sake of making an oil?

Nope, Dan basically frankensteins a reference digitally first. So it is a chop up of photos and some basic painting, then that is what is used as reference for the oil.

At least this is the method he showed us at the master class, I'm assuming that is what that print out he is holding is

I think I remember him using models for his poses. So he uses those and other reference photos to 'knit' together a piece? And then the fantasy based elements are roughly painted in?

Seems like a good exercise to get to grips with the piece before even tackling it.

Donato / Boris / Greg were big on having actual models. I can't remember if Dan did too, though. The painting he was working on was a straight on portrait and he used googled facial features from various super models.

I agree though, it is a kick ass method for getting your image right before you actually go paint it. I mean shit...i feel like i can't use any other method after learning this. It's so dammed good!

I think Dan did the frankensteining of the face for the idea sketches to present the client and then had a budget and hired a model for the photo he was working off of in class.

He makes perfect look so easy, I just feel like a clutz in comparison.

    oh cool!

    I just saw this thread.
I am happy you guys like the trailer so far.
I am super psyched for the DVD.

Aaron has done a stellar job and has 5 DAYS worth of raw footage he had to edit.
    No easy task.

The DVD should focus on the process of creating an illustration.
Unlike Shawn's DVD that dealt with the fundamentals of painting, this one will talk about client relations, acquiring reference, and a few other things specific to the book cover genre.

RATATAT has kindly let us use their music for the DVD,
so it's guaranteed to have a bad-ass sound track at the very least!
