Ok so I'm gonna start doing a lot more studies. Shit is taking too long and I feel like I've been losing some knowledge and need to expand. So I'll be posting a lot more here now.

    Here's a 2 hour one from today.

I love movie studies, I think you're doing a great job
When you chose the colors, did you colorpick from the source photo or did you use an approximate palette? (sorry if that's a lame question)

ps: I'm a fan of your creature designs

Nice epic poses on those characters. I like the mammoth one. I dont think I saw the completed one though. But cool work. Keep it up man!

Nah, not lame. I picked every color that appears on there, sometimes I will do a quick stroke with my chosen color over the reference and quickly undo to see how close I am to some of the trickier ones. For the latest study, if you look at the bottom of his robes- I perceived those as a lot greener than they were. The started out really green and I went over them with colors that I built with. Much of my color picking technique was picked up form mixing paints, and I would suggest you get and mix paint to try and match colors you observe if you're looking to improve on your colors. I try and stick to more saturated colors (like the robe was mostly blue) for the beginning of the painting. The whole thing can be watched on my livestream if you're really interested (it took about two hours, counting smoke breaks and finding the reference).

I see, that certainly teaches a lot more than simply copying the source file. I'll definitely try it, maybe with a simpler screenshot. Thanks for replying back, I really appreciate it

I have the livestream playing now. Hopefully I'll pick up a trick or two

    Thanks Joe!

Yikes I've been super down about my ability to get work lately, I guess that's what's fueling me today. Here's a hipster mage in progress.

I have to say that I find everything much easier if I use softer brushes to detail. Um. Never really thought of that before .

I'll try and just update at the end of the day, or every now and then from now on. I didn't think I'd do this much painting today...

The LOTR studies are way cool. I really like your stylized Hipster too. I like the way you tweaked his proportions...a nice balance between "real" and a soft caricature.

Gimli looks awesome, your colors/lighting match the original more or less (very good eye!). In the end that probably wasn't chainmail

You painted that mage after the screenshot study? Impressive.
Maybe his chin a tad too long tho.

Can't wait to see that one finished.

Hilarious idea with the hipster piece xd. But I'm not sure about the lightening. It looks like you want to make a day scene and he is to dark for the day scene. But maybe it's only me. I guess you know what you are doing . Cheers

havent stopped in here in a while! everything is looking good man! like everyone else has mentioned, the colors and lighting is all looking solid. but... i feel like alot of your pieces are left in the chunky brush stage. which looks awesome, but i feel like some more crisp edges, and some softer turns on your forms could really pop the 3d look alot more. that and maybe some very small brush work after everything else is said and done, for some added grit and texture, some teeny highlights on things, just to make it feel more real you know? i feel like a tool saying that, and should take my own friggin advice, when i do NONE of those things haha. but i guess its just been in my head for a while now, and needed to see it in someone elses work for me to notice it in my own. sorry to rant haha, keep it going man!

I've been grateful of the honest advice people give on here, please don't stop giving it honestly and with full brutality. Yes, I care about my art, and that's EXACTLY why I SHOULDN'T get mad when people say these things. So Nick (may I call you Nick?), I thank you for your honesty.

You're going to start seeing some more material studies from me. I've got one all picked out. Drop by the [url=www.livestream.com/ericquigley]livestream[/ur] starting about five minutes after this post to check out one of 'em.

Thanks guys, I'll update shortly with a new study.

I really meant to come home and do more work on this but I feel TERRIBLE tonight. I gotta work 11 hours tomorrow, so I'm trying to get myself rested.

here's where it got. Stupid diffused hollywood light, but goo dfor materials I guess? The face is definitely nowhere near done (he's got a weird face... even in real life) and obviously everythig else is getting blocked in.

Hipster dude, looks fine. For moment i thought that you could place him in different enviroment. In a place where meets whole group of random geek ppl. Some sort fantasy convention dunno. In my opinion he could use a little more saturation, but beside that, it's good xd Cheers.
