Have you ever rolled a tortillion in graphite dust? I shake off the excess and use the stump to block in my figures, basic tonal values and spotting of blacks. It is almost like painting with graphite. I also use a brush for this purpose, it keeps my arm fluid and one sweep of an eraser can alter it. If you like it, shoot it with fixative and enjoy it. Or you can continue to develop it...
I don't know, I am inspired to share drawing ideas when I see your new Moleskines.
The progress on the "master copy" truly kicks! I know you are going to fix that eye, so, "nuff said"

Thanks Ed. I do use torilla's but not the way you have mentioned. I should try this

I will continue on the master copy slowly. I want to observe the face more than anything else so i have cropped the whole piece. I will show progress when there is some.

I painted this the day I was waiting on my results for graduation. Finally finished Uni with a FIRST!

Time to do some real art me thinks.

    Two more:

1: Abstract cat art. The cat has just been woken from slumber.

2: Two random characters. A little description:

Meet Loth and Ant. Two vary precarious individuals.

Loth seems to be the victim of predators just because his hind legs get stuck in the ground! His long neck is a calling beacon to any unsavoury characters looking for a good dinner.

Ant on the other hand has uselessly large webbed feet, no hands, and has a long neck to attract unsavoury characters. Not only that, his long slug ears makes this guy even more appealing, as the slime made in these antennas is of the delicious sort. Even though he has a shell, the shell is too small to fit in his oversized feet and elongated neck.

    Poor guys.

    Hey bud!

The last painting looks pretty sweet. You usually do a really good job at balancing the background with the foreground.

My only crit is the color on Pat's skin just isn't as fun as the rest of the painting. Some of the portraits up top you used some interesting color choices, where's that at down here?

And I want to comment on the watercolors paintings you did recently. On the animals you did a great job using the white of the paper and the colors together to create some cool compositions. Letting the color blend out, splattering out, and the other effects, but you didn't do so on the portrait (except at the bottom).

Don't be afraid to mess around the faces yo!

Thanks both of you! Awesome Crits HugeHarHar!

Been working on this painting which will be used for a banner to advertise a resident dj. Still work in progress. Because it has to be sexy and the like, I am thinking of making the skin more vibrant. More orange than usual.

Ah thanks Wolf for the link. The client gave me the image so I had no clue where it came from. I think I'll ask permission from the photographer. I will probably still use it because I'm not just using that one for reference. That was just the basis of the inspiration. What I'm trying to achieve is to combine other imagery to try and portray the sexy look.

Not done these self-portraits in awhile. First one in about a month. No real goal to this one, just make it look like me and play around with the colours a little.

I like the expressive quality of the latest portraits. Shows character.

The paintings have a sort of ashen quality to the color. Maybe just the photograph? Are you using white paint (like gouache) with your watercolors?

Hi AikidoAI. I work with acrylics. I'm playing around with the colours and how best to use them for this series. I learn as I go a long and just keep painting along

Dude I love how much work you do. Your acrylic portraits have some of that fantastic use of color, it's definitely my favorite part about your work.

Concerning your portraits I really don't have any crits, they're some of my favorites.
Your piece for the dj is coming along, but I think the hands need to be as developed as you can get them. The choice to make the skin more vibrant was a good one.

    Looking forward to more!

Heres an update. Balance the darks and lights for compositional purposes. Added another colour to make it more interesting. I need to tweak the face a little more (too dark, faces are never that dark for Caucasian), and possibly the microphone cos' its teasing me. The arm also needs re-darkening.

    HugeHarHar:

Thanks HHH! Been having a break from Braphones for awhile. Been wanting to finish Musician.

I'll check your sketchbook in a sec. Been so busy lately I forget to visit everyones sketchbooks! lol

    Whats uuup

You've been busy this summer The work from #171 is killer, especially the last one which has good placement of soft and hard edges.

I forgot you did digital studies. I think the warm tones and highlights could be pushed some more.

Hi Mat. Thank you for the warm words and the useful advice. Sorry it took so long to reply. My life has been a little busy lately (personal life) and never thought to update this thread.

I've been working on a childrens book and some portraits for people. I will start to photograph the stages of the illustrations from now on. I will try to get some good feedback because I want this project to be special as I have never attempted something like this.

As for the portraits, I will show these as they are scanned/photographed.
