    New sketchbook

Finally a new sketchbook. the old one was getting... eh... old.

So starting today with two concepts on a children's book I work on. Here goes.

Text is in Swedish, it's a rhymed thing about some cats who live on Mars. Now, I'm just trying to decide in which fashion to continue... comic-book style or more standard children's book style. Input would be greatly appreciated.

Cooool!! I like the composition you have going in the pieces, especially the first one you're showing!! It flows very nicely to me!

As for which style to use...who's your audience?? The first style looks to be a little "older", and possibly for a general audience (including children). The second piece looks like it's more for "younger" people (then again, that's just the pictures. I have no idea about the words or anything). I myself like the comic one more--it seems more lively and freaky to me! The contrast really helps make characters pop out of the page, I think!

Somewhat off-topic, but it's strange to me that the right-most cat's head in the second style is coloured a pretty different yellow than its body. In the comic style above it, that isn't the case. Was it intentional??

Either way, I'm really impressed by both!! Looks like it would be a cool story!

JazzW - thanks! (and the coloring of heads - thanks for the heads up, but that was purely unintentional...). You most definitely got several good points, I reckon I'll do a few more to think this over...

In the meantime - a few doodles toying with coloring and structure (I try ways of coloring with masking / unmasking of separately scanned watercolored sheets)

To the left: the very first sketch. To the right a cell from the finished film. Same scene.

"Ralph & Jimmy" (as it ended up being called) premieres at Gothenburg Film Festival 2009-01-23, but you can watch the TRAILER now if you want...

Your watercolours are lovely! And I doo prefer the comic book style (it's a lot differnet to a load of specific kids' books out there at the moment and I'm fond of the slightly freakish hint it has. and that inking!)

just watched the trailer for you film and it looks brill. I love the traditionally done backgrounds. keep on doing what you're doing sirr
