    So, my days have been pretty busy lately. I have been steadily working on my paintings. I just recently bought a roll of canvas 75" x 6 yards. I can't wait to stretch out some huge canvases. I will definitely have a busy summer. It seems like the busier I get the less time I have to post up though. When every minute counts, it's kind of hard to pause and upload stuff.

    I decided to stop and take some progress shots for my own reference later. Looking at these, I can really see how my experimentation in digital has influenced my personal work.

    Those portraits really do look awesome, and so haunted too! I love how the eyes are shadowed out, it really gives them an atmosphere and mood. Anyways, can't wait to see the rest!

    Man those oils turned out great! I also really like the direction of the Link piece (the colours and composition are fantastic), but feel you can rework his pose a lot. The legs especially look rather awkward, but the entire pose is not doing a whole lot for me. Sometimes I like to try out a pose in the mirror, if anything it often makes me realize how unnatural and awkward to pose is, and many times it is in fact impossible to hold properly.

    I agree with Andrew Sonea on the Link poster, but honestly I love the "organic" direction of the shapes around link and where that is going, at first they seemed very abstract to me and very "straight from your subconcious" which is actually cool...cause...Im a nerd.

    Anyway, I think they push back the gannon and princess faces "down the ladder" as far as a "hierarchy" of focus points go. They now feel like they are in a sky behind him to me. Like they are always on his mind, but not in his immediate presence. Just my feelings.

    If they recieved any more saturation I think they would compete too much with link and his surroundings. I'm excited to see what you explore and find an more and test out.

    Hope to see it finished. I have grown up with Link and I assume you have too, I think we are close to the same age. I also see you are holding it down in Austin, my home town. Small world eh, I'll be back there some day in the future, we'll have to start a sketch group or something.

    Whoah man, really diggin the oils. I really hope to see more from you with oils and see how they influence your digital work too (and vice versa). Also interested in seeing your zelda progress. I like that you have a lot of things going on in it that aren't defined yet--you're filling the space nicely with energy and movement. I think you could harmonize Link's pose with that energy more. ANYWAY, IT LOOKS RAD!

    There's something really beautiful and soft about that figure and the values. You just definitely have a talent for painting things that arise from the darkness on the canvas, without making the shadows unbalanced. I am envious haha. I have no crit, I really enjoy the last post.

    I like many of the pieces in the first 5 pages - but then with 6-7 you really hit a higher level - first the two portraits - and then everything from 167, 169, 172 and then down.

    There is something in the 186 (with the prior sketche) that rubs me a bit wrong - maybe its just the pose - or that the elf looks to have disco era pants in the sketch or simply the size of the sword or something else - but the render of the face in 186 is nice.

    Also the last study is nice as well.


    But the portraits - and pencils really sold me.

    Wow, two weeks have come and gone since my last post. Having wrapped up my first year teaching high school art, I have to say it was a mixed experience. I definitely feel that the kids are the highlight of the experience, while all the rules and regulations make it a bit of a hassle. Round two starts mid-August. Plenty of time to work!

    So, I'm still working on Death Grip, my current body of work. Specifically at the moment, I'm using these old vintage nudes to create a sub-series entitled Paintings of Pictures of Dead Girls, or just Pictures of Dead Girls.

    Originally, I was using the images as a tool for studying, but I became really attached and enamored with the imagery and feel of the photographs. In them we have these women that have long since passed away, bones in a box, yet their beauty and youth live on in these material ghosts.

    I think what I am doing here now is very much related to that idea, creating future material ghosts. Hopefully, if I do this right, my family, friends, and experiences will live on in some way. Well past my own limited time.

    I'm really diggin the oval portraits, they look gorgeous! The Painting in progress looks really promising too. And I really like your hatching technique! Do you sketch into a moleskine? And what kind of pencil do you use? (Always like to try out new media, I currently use 2mm clutch pencils, and I think they are very handy and have a nice solid weight.) Thanks for stopping by my sb by the way

    arrgh!- likewise man, I really dig your stuff too!

    avisnocturna- I've got two sketchbooks goin', doodles and anatomy studies go into my cheap Handbook by GlobalArts, and my more refined studies go into my Moleskin. I like both, but the cheap one has already been repaired twice. Pencil? I use a Pentel SideFX .5, switching back and forth between HB and 2b lead depending, in addition to my normal range of graphite pencils. Hope to see you around more!


    So, doodles, studies, and a progress shot on some of my paintings on paper. I've slowed down a little when I'm doing my figure studies. My accuracy has gone up quite a bit more, but now I need to work on getting a bit faster. Anatomy studies are super awesome, having lots of fun with those, but need MORE! And, if you haven't noticed lots of black and white stuff. I need to push in some color studies some time. Paintings of dead girls is going ok, still working on these two, just started sketching out a third today. Oh, the doodles are a result of watching the entire first season of Game of Thrones back to back. Expect more nerdy medieval stuff in the future. And....uh...a mugshot, I'm looking for more examples to work with. If anyone knows a place where I can get pictures of mentally disturbed people that would be awesome!

    Nothing but studies this go around. So much work. So little time. Struggling with getting down to particular details on the still life of the thinks. Space study was an attempt to play with textures.

    lookin good man, the value groupings on your pencil drawings get a bit hectic, something to pay attention to a bit. Your sb stuff has a nice aesthetic though, its kind of scribbly but controlled, and kind of ghostly, I dig it.
