    Quick WIP here. Just for some fun. C&C always appreciated. The reference for the figure comes from MJ Ranum stock.

    Quick update here. I didn't like how the color was going so I grayscaled, and will add color when I finish that.

    Very nice sketchbook, your figures look really good, only critique I would give is some of your faces seem a little generic, try doing some more face studies

    Eric Young-> Thanks! Yeah, that is definitely a problem I run into. I'll be starting those up!

    OK! In the past few months I had to spend a lot of time reordering some things in my life, so there wasn't a whole ton of time to do studies. Mostly now I know that I am 'eeffffinnng ruuussstyy.

    I'm not sure if I'm helping this project by adding more things to it or if I'm just turning it into The Land Before Time. . .

    The good news is that I did manage to get picked up as a concept artist for Forsaken Studios, working on their MMO title. Check out their web here-> http://forums.forsakenstudios.com/index.php

    I'll be doing studies again daily so drop by again soon.

    Hi, I've been busy with life and school beginning again so it's taken me a while to get over here and take a stroll through your sb from page 1. Your pencil work has always been really top notch and your digi-painting is really getting there as in the one started in #121. Your self portraits are very cool too. Keep up the good work!

    Jephyr X -> Thanks a lot! And you're a trooper for looking through the whole thing! Dayum.

    Hey dudes. Sorry about the hiatus. September and October have been crazy months. Anyways, still working on some studies.

    Thought I'd jump on the cloud boat seeing how popular they are these days.
    And daaamn they are useful. I've always thought about doing them and I don't know why I put them off this long. This one still has problems with depth but the amount of knowledge that you can get from just working with the atmosphere is ridiculous. I think I'll be grinding a few more of them out sometime soon.

    Still working on the last traditional study. Really, just waiting for paint to dry so I can do the last bit of work on it.
    Got another cloud study here and an SP.

    As I was working on the cloud study, I was thinking that I was using a really counter-productive way of working. Instead of doing something like working with a simpler grey value and shadow color to start the whole thing, I was putting in the highlight color and a shadow color that didn't appear in the ref. This process is kind of how I used to do things, and I'm now really discovering how it was a completely dumb way to do things.

    These cloud studies are kicking my butt. I still have no understanding of atmosphere yet. The blue from the shadow seems to come from the atmosphere, and the lighter the shadows get, the grayer they seem to get. Which makes sense, but what really gets me are the gray values that crop up that don't fit into that. The ones that seem to not respond to the color of the light or shadow, but end up making sense spatially. I've seen it happening in a bunch of places but I still can't figure it out.

    C&C always appreciated. Thanks for stopping by!

    You seem to be going in the right direction, which is great! Only crit I'd have is to map out your faces when you're doing the studies, make sure you have your measurements right before diving into shading. They look a bit scrunched and the eyes seem a little big, but I know that post was a while ago

    Ferroh->Thanks for the advice! I really checked my proportion and placement on the last few portraits I did and they realllly improved from the last couple pages that I have done. They still have a ways to go but it's gotten a lot better. Thanks!

    focus_light->Thanks!! Keepin' the struggle alive.
    Well, I'm back from Canada now, one less than amazing interview later, and some less than successful studies later it would seem.
    I still can't figure out how the one head is constructed in the portrait studies. So, I went back to some more basic observational drawing for a bit. Made some slight improvements to finish up that gorilla, err--, cloud study from a couple posts back, too.

    It seems like you are progressing with your facial construction, proportions are much better and realistic. Nicely done.

    Broderick-> Thanks! It's good to hear some feedback on those. I still have a ways to go but my recent ones are light years ahead of the other portraits.

    Finished this up from a few posts before.

    Man, I've been getting mostly paperwork done lately. . . The good news is that after today, I'll have about half as much to do daily!
    The last couple of days I've spent making shaping up a nearly abandoned project. I retooled the comp and repainted somethings. This is when things get exciting!

    I promise my next post will be full of clouds and graphites and grubby digital paints or something or other.

    Finally updates....it's been long enough!

    I think the figure piece is going to work out OK. I still have to work some things out in the narrative though.

    brand2017->Thanks a lot!

    Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!
    I've been pretty lazy lately. I can't even blame it on turkey triptophan. My Thanksgiving was made up of soy based proteins.
    But I did finish this painting at the very least.

    Alrighty. I learned yesterday that a little thing called DEATHLINE started in early November with the Daggers. I can't believe I completely missed this but, I'm jumping on as of today: DECEMBER 1, 2011. So my three goals to complete by DECEMBER 1, 2012 are:

    1) Learn more about light, atmosphere and environment painting. It's something I've avoided for way too long and is causing my progress to slow. I'll have some weekly and monthly goals for this to break down and relate those big ol' topics there.

    2) Move out of my parents house. As sexy as living there is, it's time for change. And I hate Pennsylvania.

    3) Write and illustrate a book for the web. AKA, build up some portfolio. Book illustration and narrative is what got me into art and it's something that I've avoided because I never thought I was good enough. As long as I have a drive to improve, I'll never think I'm good, and I never want to go through a time where I don't want to improve. So, it's has to be done now!

    Here's the paper map for it. If anyone wants to name a river or a forest or mountain or town or whatever, chime in. I still need lots of names for stuff! There's a larger version here-> http://www.illustrationandrew.com/ho...apermapweb.jpg
    and a geographical map here->
    http://www.illustrationandrew.com/ho.../geomapweb.jpg

    So, that's what I'll be doing for an entire friggin' year.

    A couple updates here. Trying to reinforce some knowledge about showing depth and keep a good amount of textural variation going. The light color and environment don't show in either of them which really bugs me.

    A few updates here. It's been a busy week. Had to spend a couple days in New York City for a couple interviews, and start to get some extra drawings together for my family, but hopefully I'll have something else to post again later tonight. I have to get some work done on another project before then, though.
    Any crits would be amazing!

    Going through these pages, I realize
    that you have a great potential and that
    your art in pencil and in digital has improved
    tremendously over this last year or two.
    Simply amazing. Whatever you are doing,
    keep doing it.

    Aragah->Thanks! Yeah, that one is a WIP. The super crappy photo has a lot to do with how that looks. I swear.
