So I've been drifting around here for a while and am finally sucking it up and starting the sketchbook thing.
I've been drawing on and off for as long as I could remember but let myself get defeated, and end up starting over and over. I want to come back to art for good. I'm still not completely sure how when I suffer from some crazy brain fog but that's where this thread comes in. I'm using it to have something to be accountable to.
Anyway all comments and feedback welcome especially anything about regaining focus.
Besides the painting and the first scribble the rest were from today.

Hi. Good start. I would suggest trying to loosen up while you are drawing, instead of doing short, hatchy lines try to do longer ones, it will help you maintain the energy in your drawing.

Bleh...enormous rut. I'm pretty sure I draw worse now than I did when I was in grade school. I have no ideas. And I seem to be lacking any art sense I may have had. I'm afraid to give my input on anything I see because I don't trust my own judgment...and I find myself pointlessly ranting on a aforum...good times. Oh well...more scribble...that was pretty forced.

I like your little creatures. Who are they, what do they do? Asking questions like that might help you if you are stuck for what to draw. If you are still stuck you can always try writing down objects and animals and all sort of things on paper, putting them in a jar and then you pull a couple out and that is what you have to draw . . .

Welcome to the group! Very glad to see you decided to stick it out for the long haul. First off it seems you rush yourself a bit too much. In post #2 it seems like the last 2 drawing you had a lot more of focus invested into them. If you feel that your work is sufficient enough to your liking stop and take a deep breath and recollect your thoughts. It will make you tense up big time and just further hinder you.
To respond to your comment about being in a rut... get out and do some life drawing or do what Blythe mentioned. This will give your imagination fuel to play with these shapes and forms and understand how they work so when you are drawing from scratch you have a spring broad to draw something really freakin cool.
Cool faceplate paintings! Keep posting away and feel free to ask me what ever kinda art questions you got.

Blythe: Most of the odd little creature scribbles were trying to work toward the C.O.W. Unicorn Hunter. I rambled off a pretty elaborate concept and was trying to sort out the mechanics of such a creature. Still have it rolling around in my head. Thank you.
Kaffinated:I definitely rush. I feel like I'm in a race against my memory and loathing...something has to hit paper before I forget or get frustrated, which tends to lead to crumpled paper. Horrible way to go I know. Thanks for the input!
Ok so here are some short timed sketches using posemaniacs. I think I should stick to 5 minute ones for now...30 seconds and even two minutes seemed a bit too quick right now. I think it's been taking me a little longer to wrap my head around what I'm looking at. Though maybe pushing is the better alternative...I'm not sure.

Them cars are some nice looking cars! good perspective to em and the ladies too. 2 little things i did notice though front wheel on last car looks a lil twisted and maybe some shadows would be nice so there not floating in space

Ok, so first is a drawing I've been ignoring for a while that I decided to fiddle with a bit tonight. Then there's a few sketches for a piece I just cant seem to work out. It's supposed to be a couple killing themselves together, this is a request based on some song lyrics, and I'm not sure I'm capturing the mood. The one I actually obtained models for after doing the first cheesy sketch but I think I like the more somber feel of the last rough. Opinions?

I really like the dynamic of the girl and the dragon and I really don't want to pass any judgment on it until I see more shading. One thing I will say, it seems like her breast is too perfectly in place, and it might look better (more natural?) if it was a bit less firm, sort of draped onto the bed, if that makes sense.
Anyway, I really like where you're going with that other drawing—I'd love to see the last one more refined.

A good tip about how to regain and maintain focus: I call it immersive momentum. You have to just be completely involved with your cause, your direction, and your goals so much that it becomes impossible for you to stop, and in the serious case that you are forced to take weeks or long periods of time away, you can just pick it up again. Just get into it, full force. Once you find yourself slowing down, it's almost always because your mind is bored and you need new things to work with, so draw something new, go somewhere near and sketch, try a new medium or study a style
You've got good stuff here. Try and achieve the same results without drawing so many lines over each other. Think about the line entirely before you draw it, how it moves, connects, turns, the weight to it and then draw it out. If it isn't as good as the way you envisioned, then just erase it. It's much easier to erase and re-draw 1 line than many

IanE Thank you for the advice. I think I'm starting to get the idea just not holding as long as I'd like yet still to easy to fall out.
Ok so I'm actually taking a stab at the Icarus CHOW. I have absolutely no idea how to tackle the catapult...have to work on that. Also a bit stumped for what the wings should be completely made of. Ah well...at least I started something.

For the wings, I'd stick with what was available at that time period, and I'd say the most prominently sturdy rig for that kind of application would be very much so like ship sails, maybe combined with some sort of iron work to attach to the body. You'll probably find a lot of info and inspiration by looking here and also here.

nice cars. You have a gift with faces and human anatomy. Your last sketches look better than the first ones. Practicing has definitely improved. Keep it up!

I like the female figure above your big toe. It’s got good dynamic action and form (and no feet). I like the last one down to just past her waist. She actually has the body of a real woman and not some over muscled stick insect. Take the sock off and let’s see your toes.

You have a good start! I think your poses studies look very good. May be, as the other sugested you should try to use clear lines when you sketch.Keep up the good work and btw-don't give up!!!

Good work! I see a lot of improvement already.
I would suggest that for the figure studies you concentrate more on the underlying structure, use simple shapes, circles, cylinders whatever works best, instead of concentrating so much on the outline. The outer shape comes /last/. It will help your figuers look more lively. Also try to get a really rough sketch of the entire figure down first, within in the first 30 seconds say, and then move on to the specifics. This way you have a better chance of getting the proportions right.

I would suggest doing some blind contour drawings of the figure. There are many benefits to it despite the final results (which always end up disfigured ).
Doing blind contours should help you see the form more clearly, as well as build up your hand eye coordination (helping you with your confidence), plus its just plain fun to do.

Ok so the first batch of scraps is from last week. Did stuff from The Human Machine, posemaniacs, and a few photos. The second page is some scribble from physical therapy today. So drew the chick from a magazine while waiting, and my hand while covered with heat and ice packs. I'm really struggling to break the bad line habits.

Here's my scribble for IDW#75 Dream Splicer. I'm not submitting it though. I feel extra awkward with photoshop lately possibly because I've been avoiding it like the plague. I'm pretty terrified of color in general unless I'm oil painting.

nice to see that your doing some studies, and the xbox paintings are good, but maybe not good for the xbox lol. oh well, anyways so far your getting an ideal outline of the human anatomy, i would suggest keeping everything to a simple lines than trying to retrace each line. i hoope that helps u in a way. anyways, i like the cars that youve posted, god loves them cars. lol best of luck
