    Chow 117 :: Non-human Character :: SMAUG

    Chow 117 :: Non-human Character :: SMAUG

    ROUND #117 :: SMAUG

    -------------
    DESCRIPTION

    Smaug should not be "the Dragon in the Hobbit movie" as if it was just "another" creature in a Bestiary. Smaug should be "The DRAGON" for all movies past and present. The shadow he cast and the greed he comes to embody- the "need to own" casts its long shadow and creates a thematic / dramatic continuity of sorts that articulates the story throughout-

    "In that respect, Smaug the CHARACTER is as important, if not more important, than the design. The character will emerge form the writing- and in that the Magnificent arrogance, intelligence, sophistication and greed of Smaug shine through- One of the main mistakes with talking dragons is to shape the mouth like a snub Simian one in order to achieve a dubious lip-synch. .. A point which eluded me particularly in Eragon, since their link is a psychic one.

    "To me, Smaug is the perfect example of a great creature defined by its look and design, yes, but also, very importantly, by his movement and -One little hint- its environment - Think about it... the way he is scaled, moves and is lit, limited or enhanced by his location, weather conditions, light conditions, time of the year, etc. That's all I can say without spoilers but, if you keep this curious little summary you'll realize several years form now that those things I had in my mind ever since doodling the character as a kid had solidified waaay before starting the shoot of the film ...”
    -- Guillermo del Toro on Smaug.

    So, are we supposed to be making Samug the Dragon, or just any non-human character we can imagine?

    Given the description, making Smaug "The DRAGON" is probably a safe bet.

    Human body parts aren't very exciting/creative, but if you want to give your dragon human parts it's probably alright.

    I believe the description calls for Smaug, who is a dragon, who is not human.

    Illustrating any non-human character you imagine will not get you to poll.

    Illustrating Smaug will.

    All the best,
    ~Oreg.

    I'm still I tid confused... We come up with a design for a dragon? I don't understand the definition of Smaug you provided. Sorry if I'm annoying you with this.. lol. I think the reason I'm confused is because his first definition makes me think of the "evil" character of movies. Not necessarily the bad guy, but greed, or revenge. Then he suddenly is describing talking dragons. Which is it?

    del Toro is talking about the character traits of Smaug, those things that make him the evil character that he is.

    I chose this description because del Toro focuses fully on the Character - his whole point in the interview is that Smaug is evil, not because he looks evil or can talk, but because of several elements that make up his character including where he is. He's using all these things to help convey the idea of an immensely powerful character, who also happens to be a dragon.

    Character first. Dragon second.

    The part where he launches into a diatribe about talking dragons he's critiquing the dragon from Eragon and pointing some of the errors they made in her design. He wants to avoid those same errors, and I want you to avoid them as well.

    I think you can research the rest

    All the best,
    ~Oreg.

    Er . . . from what I read, this topic is about a non-human character, not necessarily a dragon

    smaug is the main focus, who just happens to be a dragon and a non human. i think if you draw smaug the one eyed wallrus then theres a very big chance it will not be accepted.

    Smaug
    - golden
    - simian snub
    - his belly was crusted in gems and gold
    - his tail is described as having the power of a battering-ram wielded by giants
    - he can also sleep with one eye open to keep watch over his treasure
    - has power of hypnosis using his eye
    - he believes himself to be invulnerable and is unaware of the unarmoured patch of bare skin on his breast

    Yes, you can ad in Bard and the Thrush or Bilbo.

    No no - the topic is necessarily about Smaug, the dragon. Hence the description of him from Guillermo del Toro.

    This is NOT an open topic this round.

    Here's a Wiki link to some info on Smaug, and what I believe are two illustrations by Mr. T himself of Smaug.

    Cheers

    Ok. I think I understand now. One last question: Are we trying to avoid the simian snub or embrace it?

    freeeeekin hell yes!!! I just finished reading the Hobbit like 2 days ago! I thought to myself, "Self, wouldn't it be badass to draw Smaug?" I reply with a solid yes.

    Oh man, this is going to be sweet. WOOOT!

    What I find most interesting about this, is making him more than just a dragon. In D&D almost all dragons are evil, and I've always wondered why? Is it because they kill? Is it because they eat people? No it's because WHY they kill and why they eat. After rereading the Hobbit, all of Smaug's actions bring him pleasure. The pleasure of pain and suffering of others. When he attacks Laketown, it wasn't enough to set the place ablaze, but to make sure that it was smoldering and the refugees were trapped on the lake and starved to death while he patrolled the shores. That's just cold blooded and wicked. Beautiful. Thanks Oregano!

    yes, you can do a side bar this round if you wish, though it's not required this time.

    Absolutely, positively, most definitely NOT.

    Please review the CHOW rules in the first post of this thread. If you wish to use Tolkien's artwork as inspiration, that is acceptable, however overpainting his work (or anyone else's) will do you no favors whatsoever - as an artist, or as a member of this or any other forum.
