There's a few naked people but mostly it's SFW.

UPDATE: huge sketchdump on the last page. Like, tons of stuff! Click here to go there

    Welcome! Comment away.

I currently work in Animation at a small educational games studio. I also do occasional web design for work.

I'm not as good as I need to be, so that's why I'm here. As can be expected, newer and better stuff on the later pages. However, I was smart when making this sketch book and never put any images in my first post, using it all for explanatory text! So you can still see my very first horrible images right below this post! Amazing!

Figure drawn from my head. I don't have any of my studies from the last few weeks scanned in yet, but I will soon. They look much better (and more in proportion) than this drawing. Despite its flaws, however, I can see myself getting better accustomed to how the human figure fits together. Compared to my figure drawing from a year ago, this is much improved.

Practicing with faces, trying to get better at drawing them. Also working on quick figure sketches with movement and balance.

My first digital painting in, I don't know, 4 years about. Kind of pleased with how it turned out so far, but it needs more. This was more of just a practice run to figure out how the brushes in photoshop work.

Alright, some older drawings ahead. Not that old, maybe a month or two at most. And a new one, for good measure.

Drawn about a month ago, no reference. I Noticed after I drew it that the legs and butt are incredibly big compared to the rest of her. I really like the pose, however.

The theme at our sketch group was bottom feeder. My favorite part is the expression in the poor shark's eyes.

Some quick sketches from today while I was waiting for the optometrist to see me.I like the pose on the shirtless guy, but he seems very flat. His muscles have no form.

Happy hour at the old folks' home. I really like the expression on her face. I'm not of fond of the hand holding the glass - it doesn't look natural at all.

I've notice when drawing figures, I tend to draw shapes rather than forms. The pecs on the shirtless guy are a prime example - they have no form, they just look pasted on to the guy's chest. I need to work on rendering three-dimensional forms better, more rendering and less 2D shortcuts. That will be my goal, and what I work towards for this week. We'll see how successful I am next tuesday.

First off, some quick sketches done off of PoseManiacs in Photoshop. Each sketch was approximately 5 - 10 minutes.

The next one is part of a series my friends and I are doing. We're creating new designs for the characters from The Wizard of Oz. This is Glenda, the good witch of the north. I'm going for a 50's/greaser theme.

Thanks for the comment, Jansi! I would imagine that, sometime soon, there will be a color version of that dinosaur. Just a hunch....

Anyway, here's an update on the digital painting I posted a while ago.

    Smile Whoa nipples!

    Hey GMC

I admire your goal to improve daily. We share that in common. I needed to point at one thing that jumped out at me in your digital painting. The nipples are way to close to the center of the chest. I don't have a whole lot of anatomy training to back that up, just a different set of eyes looking at the same drawing. I did I real quick adjustment to show you what I mean.

    Does that help at all?

On that same note, I love that hand reaching out. I think it has great shading and form.

Speaking of form, you said "I've notice when drawing figures, I tend to draw shapes rather than forms."

I know what you mean by this and it is a good long term goal, but it is important to get the where before the what. If you have a good outline to an object or a figure, you have the best start to be able to fill it out accurately.

I hope that helped. Best of luck!!!

    Thanks for the help!

As far as the anatomy in the painting goes, I understand that normally the nipples are close to the outside of the chest, but my subject (I am drawing from a photo I found online) has a very concave chest (hence the dark shadows in the center) and his nipples really are that close to his center. I double checked the reference with the painting just now, and regardless of any other problems in that painting the nipples are placed where they should be.

I understand what you mean about the where before the what. What I was meaning was that my shapes were flat, whereas they should be fully rounded forms. I was drawing shapes without thinking of the form, and they looked flat an unconvincing because of it. I'm working on that, though. Hopefully that will get better with practice.

Quick update - colors, text, etc. on the digital painting. I'm pretty pleased so far, but I know that there's so much further this thing could be pushed. I'll probably start a background in a few days, but not until monday at the latest. I am going to be heading off to a conference on educational games in Madison, Wisconsin for a few days. I'll be drawing while there, but won't be able to post till I get back.

This has been a pretty good learning experience for digital painting, I'm excited to see where this goes.

Alright, back form the GLS conference in glorious Madison, Wisconsin. I had a great time thee few days I was there. Educators, game designers, and academics all meeting to discuss games and learning turned out to be very, very interesting. I only had my little tiny sketchbook, but I made an effort to draw every day (most often during the most boring seminars and workshops). Thee following are the most coherent pages. I tried to do lots of sketches from life, mostly focusing on faces. Here they are:

This sketch was from the first full day of the conference. Boring lecture, and early in the morning to boot so I was just warming up.

This guy gave a presentation on the game Portal. He had some very interesting things to say about how the game was structured and how it taught you to navigate in its gameworld.

This is james Gee, who is kind of a big name in the games theory section of academia. he has a lot of great ideas regarding game structure and stuff like that...I'm not much of an academic these days, so that's as specific as I get on this topic. He was attending the Portal demonstration.

This chick was sitting next to James Gee at the Portal presentation. I called her "blogger" at first, but ran into her later and noticed that her name was Mary. She took her blogging very seriously.

30 second drawing of a drunk dude at the dinner party they had for us in a damp, dark, rained-out park. Thee dinner was catered by Tex Tubb's Austin Style Taco Palace, which has thee best name of any restaurant in the world but unfortunately some of the worst food. At least there were free margaritas and beer...I was somewhat tipsy as I sketched this.

A quick sketch of the capitol building from my hotel room. ~10 minutes, at 7:30 am so I'm glad Iw as able to see at all - I should have been sleeping. The phrase "badger on head" refers to thee fact that the statue of Justice does, indeed, have a badger sculpted on her head. She also wears a miner's helmet.

    Some stuff.

Pose from imagination. Quick and dirty, but I like the weight that this pose has to it. You can't really see to much in the scan, but she's sitting on the bumper of a car. Or the rough outline of a car bumper - I didn't really push it as much as the figure.

That's it for today. I just spent 13 hours flying back home today (Curse you, american airlines and your stupid flight cancelations!), so I am too tired to do anything but go to bed right now. More tomorrow, though.

More playing around with figures. These actually don't look as clutttered in real life, my sketchbook is too big for my scanner, so the colors come out a bit weird and I have to play with the levels a lot to get it to look right.

This weekend, I've been spending most of my time working on faces, and some on proportion as well. I've been using Peck's
Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist for my references and information on proportions.

I'd like to think my faces are improving. Most were done without references. I tried my best to do all types of head shapes, sexes, and ages so i don't get trapped drawing "that one face."

Hey man good to see you're taking drawing seriously. The main thing I think you should work on is construction in 3d space. Right now your drawings are looking flat. Practice your perspective and drawing basic volumes correctly in 3d space. You need to slow down and take the time to build up your figures. Your heads won't look good if you have a poor underlying structure. Look for the books from Andrew Loomis they available for free somewhere on the net. Also if you can get your hands on Vilppu's drawing manual. Anyways just my two cents. I hope to see more sketches soon.

fantasyartist - Thanks for the advice. You're right my shapes, this is the problem I keep having most of the time. I have actually had all of Loomis' books on my computer for a while, but was holding off on getting into them because I currently have no printer, and my computer is in the common room of the house I live in, so there's always distractions there. It's not an ideal place to draw. But, I've been putting it off long enough, so loud roommates or not I sat down today and started reading through Figure Drawing for All It's Worth. Posted here is my first study from the book.

Nice figure studies! I just downloaded the same book, so I'm hoping to start on my own figure studies as well.

OK, for anyone who happens to be watching this thread:

I've been out of town for a few days, but I got back earlier this week. Last night, I was getting ready to scan some drawings and put them up around 11:30 when I noticed that my computer was not waking up. it turns out that my video card is dead.

So, no picture updates until Apple gets my computer fixed. I'm sure that there are, you know, hundreds of people who watch this thread and are anxiously awaiting updates, but you will all have to wait a few days. Until then. I will only be surfing and putting up text images while on breaks at work.

Good news - my video card isn't dead, it just stopped working for a while. Probably has something to do with the electrical storm that passed through here yesterday. Anyway, pictures and such. I know it's been a while, but I haven't been slacking off. I was out of town in a wedding.

    Continuation of Loomis studies.

MORE LOOMIS! I should note that this is pretty much all I did in my free time while in Denver for that wedding.

Some concept sketches, playing around with the idea of a "tabasco warrior." My friend was looking for some projects to model out in 3D, so I said I'd help him out and give him a tabasco warrior.

Quick doodles, playing around with figure poses and perspective. I needed a break from all that Loomis.

A quick sketch from life of the woman in front of me at The Tattered Cover, a local Denver bookstore and coffee shop. I highly recommend that place - they have an awesome selection.

Close up of her - she doesn't look all that good zoomed in.

Side view, with a screwed up face. I tried to get that face right for almost an hour, and I can't figure out why she looks so wrong. If anyone could point out what's wrong with my anatomy in that picture, I would appreciate it greatly.

Working on getting more volume out off my figures, so I started shading them. I also got some new pens today, so I used those too.

1 hour, photo reference. I like how this one came out.

1 hour, photo reference. I really like thee hair in this one. The shading on the face doesn't really work, though. Also, I had some problems inking the feet.

    Just drew this today.

I took extra time on the face, making sure to study the reference, and I think it really shows, especially compared to my last drawing. I am thinking off inking and shading this one like my previous few drawings, but she looked so pretty and demure just sitting there that I decided to take a picture and post it before I did anything else with it in case it didn't turn out as good as I hoped.

Alright, so I went ahead and inked and shaded that last drawing. I think it turned out alright.

Here it is, right after inking.

And again, after shading and touching up some of the ink.

After getting so far in to the design, however, I began to notice some anatomy issues. her right side (that's her right, not your right) need to be shifted over some - her right thigh is bigger than the left one, and her right shoulder is also longer than her left one.

I really hate finding these things out AFTER i've put so much work into them, but at least I'm spotting them so I can hopefully learn from them later, right?
