Instead of the normal one entry per person, this time we want to see a variety of work.
Judging will be based on idea development, presentation, and the over-all body of work (vision). The amount of work invested in each idea or concept is up to you; 5 developed concepts with sketches to back them up, 100 thumbnails categorized on different subjects, go wild. In the end, bundle it into one image/submission and post in this thread.
The results will be judged by both a public poll and a judging panel, as there are going to be awesome prizes for the winners!
Focus the illustration on the characters, idea development, and design. You may include environments, and creatures and equipment... But they should not be the focus of the design. Both color or B/W entries are accepted.
Max single submitted image size 1200x1024 pixels.
New Images only, no old work.
Just a reminder:
DEADLINE IS TONIGHT AT 11:59.

I’m working with a couple of different ideas.
The first sketches are for a near-future genetic engineering scenario where humans are attempting to establish an undersea utopia, told in a sort of diary, day-in-the-life style about the challenges of what they’re trying to do. I will refer to this as “Sci-Fi”
The other is a new episode of Gulliver’s Travels, in Atlantis. For this 18th-century fantastical world, the Atlanteans might be wispy-finned water-breathing mer-people or they might be fairly normal looking air-breathers who use technology to let them breathe water and good old flippers to swim. They have a very ideal, almost saccharine utopia, and there will be some social commentary, though I’m still trying to figure out that part. I will refer to this as “Gulliver.” Here's my POW progress.
A few designs (e.g. the dolphin-mermen) may have potential for either world.

- between 15 and 40 years old
- survivor of the once known human race, now a hybrid between humans and an unknown species
- needs liquid (made of recycled utopia habitants-but they must be freshly catched, already dead corps are not of any use) to breath under water as also on dry land(or at least what is left above the surface)
- hunts also to provide "material" for experiments and everlasting search for eternal life
- nasty son of a bitch overall

After finding two pages from the presumed lost logbook of Tom Inglesson, a research team under leadership of Sir Jonathan Kingsly went down into the deep in the centre of the Tobacan sea to explore and find out what was true about the forgotten tale of the Tenterticuan.

Background Info on the Utopia: This world is on a planet in a galaxy unknown to men at this point in time. Basically it is a society similar to Canada, in the sense that it is a land for immigrants. It has been built only 300 years ago. Species from around the universe come here, and pay obnoxious amounts of money to stay in this underwater Utopia. It has been built and ran by some of the richest and most talented individuals from around the universe. The underwater world is filled with a certain mixture of air that most species from around the universe agree with. There are certain cities however, that are filled with different types of water, for immigrants that don't use air, but still want to experience life in the encased underwater cities.
War is never a problem, poverty or hunger is never a problem, the government is never a problem, in fact, there really are no real problems here.
(1) This man has the monopoly on the whole food industry in this world. Every piece of food made on this whole planet, be it fast food or fine dining, comes from this man's corporation. He is the only known creature in the universe to own a complete gastronomical monopoly on an entire planet.Needless to say he is one of the richest men in the universe, and his restaurants can be found pretty much any planet you can visit.
(2) This man has a monopoly on the mining business. He gathers every energy source needed throughout the entire world. Sometimes he even gathers them from other worlds and imports hem back home.He has mining businesses in over 100 planets. He is one of the richest men in the universe as well.
The President of this world. He conceils his identity so that racism cannot arise. He might be a human, might even be a robot. He doesn't rule with an iron fist, mostly because nothing goes wrong.
This is the Church Leader. The only Human official in this world. No race other then humans ever believed in god, so he isnt very important. He pretends to be a prophet.
This man is the commander of the Military. He was recruited by this planet as the supreme commander of it's military for the brilliant leadership he has shown in the wars back at his own planet. However since arriving, the only thing he ever had to do is whipe out the natives, and has not seen any action ever since. The military on this planet may be highly trained, but they have no real experience.
This man is the main engineer and architect on this planet. He is in his middle ages, he is 432 years old. He has built and designed next to everything on this world. His species are known for really long lifetimes, and therefore extreme amounts of experience and wisdom. Obviously he is an extremely rich and important man.
This is the head doctor, his crowning achievement was being able to mix different species together, and create offspring that was never before possible. He has troublekeeping his hands to himself though, and has been on trial many times for sexually harrassing his patients. What he brings to medicine everyday is way more important then his misconduct, and his lawyers are way too expensive for him to loose a case, so he stays.
No one knows what species this creature is. All we know is that there is none other like it. This creature is known for momentarily appearing on planets and foretelling their ultimate destruction in the approporiate language for the given planet (despite not even having a mouth). When its advice isn't taken, the planet ends up destroying itself in the exact way the creature foretold. It has been making recorded appearances for a few billion years now. Some say this creature is all that ever was, and all that will ever be.
This time it visits the underwater Utopia and fortells it's demise in the form of ruthless creatures erupting from the underwater caves to claim what is rightfully theirs and destroying everyone and everything in the process.
This race lived in the underwater caves, and inside the planet's core for millions of years, but then the invaders from the entire universe came and built underwater cities on top of their emergence holes and caves. Now they are going to take them back.
Through specific training they can grow weapons on their arms, so each one of these creatures will have a bit of a different arsenal. This one in specific decided to focus on his right arm to grow an ultimate blade that can crush anything (including the unexperienced military of the immigrant invaders).
And that is how my underwater Utopia began and met an abrupt end.

The background story, was inspired by numerous legends, myths and art of an ancient world
especially civilizations of precolumbian america and mezopotamia. The subject is big and my english doesn't allow me to write a poem here , but i'll try to discribe things properly. I've been always interested in stuff like unexplain fenomenons, ufo, history, ezoteric literature etc., some time ago
i discovered Zecharia Sitchin's and Erich von Däniken's theory of "ancient astronaut of human origins". Since that time i was searching the web for different information on that subject.
I'll try to describe this theory in a few words for those who didnt heard about it, Its about an 12 planet of solar system, Nibiru, the home of technologically advanced dudes called Anunnaki.
The roots of that theory leads to few stone tablets (Enuma Elish itd) made by the Sumer civilization, witch according to the history books was the first civilization on earth but scientists dont know from where they come from and why they gone... So according to Sumer writings
there were a huge collision between two planets Nibiru and Tiamat, Tiamat split in a half and thats how earth was born, so its actually half of a planet. 450.000 years ago Anunnaki first came to earth searching for minerals, they needed workers to gather gold in mines so they geneticly speed up evolution process of mankind to get a human who can serve. that can explain missing link in human evolution.
i'll mention here some interesting facts that realy speaks to me.
- Archaeological research says that 100.000 bc there were huge mines in south africa
-Incredible astronomy knowledge of ancient civilizations see Maya, Sumer, Chavin etc
- Traces of ancient nuclear explosions founded in India, Africa, and Dead sea .
- Map of turkish admiral Piri Reis (16th sentury) map shows Antarctica without ice ( antarctica was discovered in 1812)
- Numerous artefacts and architecture of ancient civilizations: crystal skulls, wall in Sacsayhuaman, sun Gate in Tiahuanaco etc
- Ancient hindu writings contains discriptions of flying machines, nuclear and laser weapon..
its spaceship pilot
and those are miners

I wanted my story to be about a crew having wacky adventures. Robots, laser guns, samurai swords, penguins... must have penguins. The crew and some baddies.

My designs have alot to do with just trying to create as many atypical aquatic genre types as possible. I just wanted to get away from what I would normaly think of as undersea inhabitants, while still trying to keep an ocean life feel.

The idea: humanity has wasted the surface of the planet and is forced to retreat to the depths of the oceans calling it a new beginning. Once there, they discover that while they had their eyes on the stars, there had been many new developments in the life of the DEEP. - enjoy

Lot of nice work here...I doubt that what I have can even compare. Anyway, here I go.
In the near future, we discover a water-covered planet named Serphais. It turns out to be populated by fantastic creatures and beings. The humans arrivals were welcomed, and they coexist with several races that inhabit that world. Here are some of them:
1) Syphidia- They are technologically superior race that resemble the squids of earth. They communicate mainly by color, and they are also able to communicate with humans by using synthesized sounds. Here is Y'Dizza, one of the Syphidias that work very closely with the non-aquatic races to help them to adapt to the watery environment. He's affectionately called Squiggy by some.
2) Abyssal Merpeople- Oh no...I did a mermaid. How unoriginal. Well, these are different from the mythical merpeople...they are able to exist in unfathomable depths and withstand crushing pressure and darkness. Their skin is pale, and they have luminscent lights with which they communicate. These people are isolated from other races, but Neryis is different. She tries to bring her people in contact with the other beings.
3) Dungkai - These alien beings are newcomers, and resemble manatees. They are very gentle and peaceful people, and very religious. A healthly Dungkai can weight up to 600 pounds (and have no heart problems!). Popko is a unusual Dungkai, because he believes that his people's religion has gone from the true faith. He struggles to make them see that and is branded a heretic. Alienated from his own people, he lives with the humans.

I had to hurry big so I could stink up the joint. Most of this was done over the past 2 days and I kinda hate myself for the pathetic work I had to let slide. Prepare for the ugly.
The council's face is pearl, he carries his birthplace on his back. The drowned man was just a fun little mystical-type spin on things.

The idea was to show a report based on collected material from a missing marine research vessel, describing unknown creatures and characters from the deep sea, characters that although very different in both look and personality, are part of an utopia. The study is still on its initial stage, and very little is known about these species. The search and recovery crew only got few clues and data about this recent discovery. This is part of it.
Done entirely in pencil and using a slight variation of a bg I have used in previous works of similar nature.
It was quite fun to participate in DEEP. Good job and good luck everybody!

Coldrum Chow Finals
Here's a few of my finals... not sure if I'll have time to finish the rest.. I did 5 of these today so I think I'll call it done : D
I wanted my Utopian race to look friendly... or at least to be peace loving. Also I tried to give the characters individual personalities. I was hoping to really dive into this a lot more than I have and explore many types of character. These guys are hopefully a good start.
This race lives in small cities built into the many cavities that naturally exist upon massive elephant turtles. I've posted one of these in the COW forum ; ) Their habitat is self supporting and relies on the many other sea creatures living in harmony with them.
Here's a link to the what they build their cities on!... These slow moving giants follow the warmer climates around the globe. http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...1&d=1214470744
Good luck everyone! - Jez

Ammonite scientists/revolutionaries from the Cretaceous period come forward in time, meet people, get in adventures. Technology trading and an alliance create an undersea utopia. About 78 pages of supporting sketches appear in POW.

Only managed to make it with CHOW this time.
But since the enviroment is key to understanding, I will give a brief intro to it in writing here:
The idea is that two excentric gentlemen during the victorian era discovered a new way to easily access energy. They could use lavarock and put it in any state possible, including red-hot. This could be done with the lavarock put in coffee-cup sized containers that later could be used to make steamengines run. Of course this made new inventions possible for them, aswell as real improvements in machinery.
This is now some time later (undefined), the two gentlemen built a Utopia called Tharsinia, in which our heroine lives. The city looks like a victorian style city, it sits in an underwater trench where the water is held up by an unknown force. It constantly rains drops from the suspended water. There are only entertainment and education available for the citizens of the city as nobody needs to work. Religious groups are common though no real fights amongst these groups exist, as they are more there for their entertaining purposes. Food comes delivered to homes and eatingparlors. Nobody knows from where.
The heroine of the deal has text on the image explaining some things, as does the Aquanaut.
Here is some additional info:
Starts in an abandoned part of the city. It is abandoned because of the waterline sometimes dropping so low it drowns everything there (so she is quite high up). She is only equipped with what is shown on the conceptual. As the game (for this is a game I have concluded :p) progresses, she will obtain other objects (that I intended to do for IDW, but life you know...)
Has a symbiot attached in his stomache area. You can see it on the image, but I couldn't fit the text.. The symbiot is what alters the Aquanaut. This happends throughout the game, and so at different stages of the game, the Aquanauts will have evolved more into monstrocities.
For the other two, here is some info:
The Hydronaut is one amongst many. Specialized in hunting down "topsiders" to bring as sacrifice or breedingstock for Aquanauts. He has only mechanical aids at hand. The fierce look is made to scare the topsiders into thinking they are "monsters". They serve "the First Citizen".
The Halfasleep God
The source of the inovation of lavarock-steampower, and the reason why the water is held in suspension above Tharsinia. It has no grappling arms or appendages, but it's tentacles have blue "eyes" at the end. These eyes can hold objects by an unseen force (as demonstrated by the image).
The goal of the game (ultimately) will be to kill this monstrocity, thereby destroying...the....utpia and.....drown everyone in Thars-..........ehm... yeah..
