    Eow Deep: VOTE!

    the poll is up!

Starting May 15th, 2008, and running until 11:59 pm on June 30th, 2008, all the weekly contests will be combined and unified under one topic, "DEEP: Undersea Utopia" and for EOW this means...

    Environments of the Undersea Utopia
Civilization, biosphere, dwellings, palaces businesses, agriculture as much of the whole idea as you can possibly imagine.
Please create several views of the SAME world so that you decribe the entire environment that you imagine.

The world is Deep under the sea, so it's up to you to decide; how it got there, how it survives, or even whether the inhabitants are air breathing or not. it is all up to you to show us your vision of the perfect world under the sea.

Instead of the normal one entry per person, this time we want to see a variety of work.

Judging will be based on idea development, presentation, and the over-all body of work (vision). The amount of work invested in each idea or concept is up to you; 5 developed concepts with sketches to back them up, 100 thumbnails categorized on different subjects, go wild. In the end, bundle it into one image/submission and post it in the Final Burning Thread.

The results will be judged by both a public poll and a judging panel, as there are going to be awesome prizes for the winners!

Focus the illustration on the environment, idea development, and it's design. You may include characters, and creatures and Stuff... But they should not be the focus of the design. Both color or B/W entries are accepted.

Max single submitted image size 1200x1024 pixels. Remember that you are to present multiple images to portray this world. I recommend: distant view, medium view and close up details. of several aspects.

New Images only, no old work.

Here's a few notes for you guys:

    1. Environments can be whatever you think fits the bill. Natural, Created, Built, it doesn't matter. You're totally open.

    2. Submit all your work in one post in the final burning thread. I'm going to put the final burning thread up WELL before the deadline, so you can post in there and edit it when you have new work to add to it. So if you finish a few pieces well before the 6.5 weeks (!!) are up, but then finish some more, you are to submit them all together.

    3. This is about ideas, not just pretty renderings! Judging will be based on the body of your work, and the ideas within, and presentation. However, craftsmanship is always important too, so do a nice job!

    4. There will be a poll, but final winners will be decided by a judging panel. This is because...:

    5. There is the potential for some really awesome prizes. Trust me. Trust me they are awesome. Keep your eye on this space for details.

We want to see what you can think of, how much you can think of, and how far you can stretch yourself. Guys, run with this! We all have the potential to pull together some ridiculously awesome stuff. Please take time with your art work, this is a great opportunity to show everyone of what you are capable of and there is plenty of time to do a great job. Put some thought into it!

    Good luck!

    Deadline: June 30 - 11:59pm

Many of my ideas were inspired from the City of Petra.
If you don't know what Petra is (not the band... the City) check it out, you might enjoy what you see.
The city is basically built out of it's surroundings and holds some biblical significance.

In my case Tall canyons, tight caves and narrow passages seem to frame in the city's linear construction.
The Large bedrock and tectonic structures beneath the sea compliment some of these living spaces as some
of the cities tend to run hundreds of feet within the earthy walls and geological creations; creating wonderfully
    insulated and supported quarters.

I wanted to stick with a concept group that would be plausible for the human race to accomplish, thus
bringing the viewer into the body of work as though we could relate to the environment that we strive to survive in.

Here's what I have so far:

The main idea behind this undersea utopia is that it is an alien spacecraft voyaging from far away to study earth life, including humans. There are five of these crafts placed strategically around the world's oceans, each having the capacity to sustain a crew of 30. The space capsule partially anchors itself in the deep ocean floor, mainly to camoflauge itself from humans. They use the spacecraft as a headquarters for it's scientific studies. The craft is self-sustaining, having a reliable food supply growing in the four pod-like structures protruding from the craft's sides. The power supply comes from underwater hydrothermal vents converted into energy. The top part of the craft detaches from the main "body", as an escape vessel.

This is an interior shot of the alien creatures' sleeping pods.
The aliens enter the pods, then the pods' entrance seals up, and the container is filled with liquid that keeps the creatures in a preserved state until they need to wake up. When the re-animation sequence is initiated, the pod sends an electric surge through the liquid to jumpstart the alien's heart, thus bringing the creature out of it's sleeping state. There are at least three rooms filled with these pods in the spacecraft.

Here are some of the environment sketches I've done for my two different story ideas. Most of these are for "Gulliver's Travels in Atlantis". The supercavitating railcar is for my sci-fi Utopia-in-progress story. I probably won't do finished renders, because I'm focusing primarily on the POW story and letting the rest grow out of that.

After finding two pages from the presumed lost logbook of Tom Inglesson, a research team under leadership of Sir Jonathan Kingsly went down into the deep in the centre of the Tobacan sea to explore and find out what was true about the forgotten tale of the Tenterticuan.

    DEEP: Undersea Utopia-undertotalitarianism

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Jellyfish town

A group of up to 5 towns, each of which houses 2000~3000 people and
connects together by fully closed channels. Only 25% of its capacity are above the
water surface. A pair of pipes at the bottom of a jellyfish town connects with its Gravity town
which sits on the seabed. Through the pipes liquid oxygen flows from Jellyfish town to
Gravity town while energy produced from terrestrial heat moves upward in an
opposite way. Top ranks in the fish-citizens’ society will enjoy their vocation at here.

    Energy Collecting Plant

Here is one part of the plant in Gravity town. They mixed up donated human organs from root rank with some ocean creatures so the hybrids can work smart and strong. It is an undersea-totalitarianism era, so called donated human organs actually come from jails somewhere, while the fish-citizens who live in the city know nothing about electrocution or gas chamber, only army and secret police know the path to slum region through the seabed.

1 = "Deep blue" one of the oceans canyons.
2 = An idea for transportation through tunnels using controlled ocean currents.
Which can be used to shorten the journey from and to the city.
3 = "Deep inn", an inn at the outer reaches of town near a swamp.
4 = The lower alleys need all the light they can get. Made to look like what they saw in postcards floating
on the surface. Quite a exotic look.

    Hey all,
New to this so I thought I would give this a bash. It was fun. Based on earth after a climate disaster. The inhabitants move to the deep to escape the soaring temperatures. They take with them memories and relics of old.

"...We shall swim out to that brooding reef in the sea and dive down through black abysses to Cyclopean and many-columned Y'ha-nthlei, and in that lair of the Deep Ones we shall dwell amidst wonder and glory for ever."
H.P. Lovecraft The Shadow Over Innsmouth

    Corspufo EOW Deep

This underwater utopia is a realm simply known as The Deep. Humans have laid claim to these lands and are able to "breathe" the water of the deep ocean. A very special ore has been discovered that is able to oxygenate water. The water then is able to be inhaled and give humans all the air they'll ever need. Everyone that lives in the Deep works hard and contribute to the well being of their world. Yet all is not work, when their labor is done, they enjoy each others company in lavish parties and wondrous feasts.

Most daily life, and nightly, takes place in the water. But now and then there are grottoes and special area that are on land, or at least dry areas. It is here where some of the luxuries of land are grown, like special trees and vegetation.

Life underwater is pleasant and enjoyable. In this society, danger is not very far off, but safety is insured and harmony thrives.
