    The Nth Sketchbook

Very new to this forum, found it only yesterday and have had a great time browsing, never really subjected my own work for critique from a peer group before & decided it was time to go back and start learning again.

Only training i've had was what little I read of 'How to draw comics the Marvel way' by Stan Lee & John Buscema, which was a present from my comic collecting older brother when he saw me trying to draw spiderman and the likes.

So many, many years down the line, I present to you: Cyco Miko
Any Suicidal Tendencies fans will no doubt spot who this character owes his likeness to, please feel free to c+c. (Which i'm now learning doesn't just mean 'command & conquer') This was drawn over the space of an 6 hour shift using a ballpoint pen & *cringes* lined paper.

Up until this 'Cyco Miko' drawing, I hadn't picked up a pen in near a year (Signing my name doesn't count, yes?) and even before then never regularly, I was suspended from my account via some minor disciplinary matter and bought a pad of A4 lined paper to kill the time doodling, it's rekindled my interest to the point that i found this place and am now looking for a low-budget graphics tablet.** (Wacom Bamboo I think)

In terms of a theme, this sketchbook will likely contain varied ideas, many pertaining to Ice Hockey (long time player & fan), Martial Arts (dabbled in a couple of systems & maintain an interest - UFC fan) and general fantasy fiction with maybe a few game influenced pieces. (Xbox360 Live)

Here was another sketch I did whilst still suspended from the computers. (Access is restored now, that's how I found this place. )

Pointers in the direction of the most basic tablet tutorials would be handy too.

    Domo,

    Turtle

**Bought a tablet, (Wacom Bamboo Fun Small) so i've added my 1st paint here to change the thumbnail, maybe get a couple more views?

Here's an older one playing with a little perspective, a tongue-in-cheek statue honouring my victims in Halo2. Once again just in BIC pen & done during a shift.

Here's one I coloured on PaintShopPro, did the initial sketch on paper and scanned it. Far more cartoon like than my usual work, it's a representation of my online alter-ego Nth Turtle, the 3rd such effort i've done & probably my favourite of the 3, i'll probably put the others up later.

Another of my alter-ego depictions, this was the 2nd one I did, covers all the bases with the Xbox Live headset, the bandana I wear, a Kilt to represent being Scottish, my actual Van trainers which I posed on a table and simply photographed directly into the picture, the Sharks top logo was taken off a mug in the SJS shop with the top itself being drawn & textured, the kilt was the bandana tartan with a texture. The green belt to represent my current grade in the system I trained in.

The weak point is the gun, which I started, but didn't really finish. Shouldn't have put it in really.

Here's a 6step self defence technique, i've done a few of these, but this is one of my favourites. The initial frame is meant to be a clothing grab.

Okay, bought a tablet (Wacom Bamboo Fun small) and used the freebie software (ArtRage2) to paint up one of my most recent drawings. In fact the 1st drawing in the sketchbook, which has been edit/updated to change the thumbnail.

So here it is in it's full glory if you want to see it full sized. (Click on image)

All crits welcome, i'm here to try and improve.

    G'day mate
Nice pen work on the Halo pic. You've picked some difficult angles and perspectives to draw and paint(1s im scared of), and done quite well with them.
Your first wacom painting is going good. R u planning to paint a background?

Thanks man, I honestly hadn't considered a background, and now that I have, i've no idea what to do and how the lighting will affect the main picture. lol

On a side note, here's one I flung together today, nothing serious, just a short comic strip. The background story was a guy in my hockey team wasn't at training last night, in transpires that he broke his shoulder falling off his motor scooter. (The guy's a chef) so I fired this together in an effort to get it up on the team forum.

Friend on my hockey team who is somewhat Homer like (Big, yellow, clumsy) asked me to do a hockey playing homer, he's going to have it put on some clothing and possibly the hood of an ol' VW Beetle.

I put Homer in our Home & Away jerseys:

heheh - you got a nice fun outlook with your art - and you've certainly got some skills if you really haven't drawn for as long as you say! - Nice one

Lets see some more quick sketches with pencil and action / movement studies - a little more 'flow' and you're rockin!

    Keep it up

My entrance into the Spidey Challenge.

Thought i'd do a 'What If...' style parallel universe/alternate reality depiction of Spiderman.

In this reality Incy Wincy Spider* The Nth Sketchbook goes on holiday to Chernobyl where he gets bitten by a radioactive human The Nth Sketchbook

Okay, not my latest drawings, but recent enough and rough enough to give you guys an idea of how/what I do (And hopefully what I need to work on).

General idea in starting it was an obvious, exaggerated hero type intimidating some weasely criminal lowlife.

    All crit is welcome,

    The Nth Sketchbook

I followed it up with this one, since I liked the lowlife character better than the 'roided bully. I don't know who's the guid guy & who's the bad guy anymore. Maybe they're both bad.

Okay, here is my step by step creation of my 'Hulk Vs' competition entry, roughly in chronological order.
Lots of steps, so lots of attachments, all reduced in size so this doesn't kill my computer.
My final finished piece was too large to fit into the attachments size limit as a Jpeg so it's slightly reduced in size from the original, but not so much that there's an obvious reduction in quality.

I am supremely happy with this, considering it my best work to date, but do feel free to c&c anything you see.
    Thanks for watching.
