    <((Havoc's Sketchbook))> - Update Dec 20

    This be my sketchbook

This is a crop of an old piece. On the right is a new remake of it. The new one is still a WIP, but hopefully I can get to it over the sumer

This one is pretty old, but I like it. It's the last boss from Metroid Prime 1. No ref used:
    Name: metroid prime.jpg
Views: 809
Size: 159.8 KB

Another oldie but goodie. No reference was used, though its technically based off an in-game comic cover from spiderman 1 on the ps1 (I was never able to find a ref of it on the internet):
    Name: venom.jpg
Views: 805
Size: 157.8 KB

Quick painting practice. Reference is pretty obvious. The trailers look sick (I've always been a bit of a joker fan):

Doodle referenced from a low-rez apocalyptica album. Source can be found here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=eR9QZrr63uQ

Playing around with some playdough. I'm not experienced with claywork, but I think I'd like to try it out over the summer. This is supposed to be a dragon head:

Face study from IdiotApathy's mentoring thread: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...=116878&page=2 The reference image can be found here: http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/5...0120026ee5.jpg

Newest piece I'm working on. The refs are on the left (had to get the legs from another source). This is Weavel from Metroid Prime Hunters and the main reference was a frameshot from the game's intro:

Tony Kain: Thanks for stopping by
Peter Stapleton: Thanks man, I'm glad you like it. Yeah that dragon was originally an assignment in my intermediate level drawing course. The paper is some 23" x 30" (I forget the exact dimensions). Hopefully I'll have time to finish this baddie over the summer.
Charshie: Thank you. I started this sketchbook as a means to force myself to constantly draw. Hopefully I will not disappoint with the updates .
    __________
Speaking of which, it's finally time for an update:

This piece is some 9 months old, but I only recently scanned it in. I plan on painting it in the near future if all goes well. No ref used:
    Name: darkness.jpg
Views: 875
Size: 313.4 KB

This dragon's design is loosely based off the pokemon, Garchomp. No reference was actually used in order to try to stay somewhat original (give or take). It's just as old as the previous piece, but I might paint it in the future:
    Name: garchomp.jpg
Views: 883
Size: 223.0 KB

First of hopefully dozens of anatomical studies. I currently do not have access to life drawing classes, so these will have to do for now. The first, Loomis:

These one were done today. Source can be found in Idiot Apathy's thread. The second was a success. The first and third did not turn out too well :

Thanks for stopping by nonie . Technically speaking, I am not being mentored by Idiot, nor have I signed up. These studies are more stalkeresk version at best . After some more refining, I may join Idiot's sign-up thread and hope for the best.

Doodling in photoshop. I'm not sure how well this reads to others as of now, but I'll be pushing this further.

I'm not drawing as often as I'd like. At least this is a step in the right direction

Long time no post. I don't have internet access for the summer except for period visits at a relative's. The scanner I'm using butchered up a lot of these. I'll rescan some of the better one's when I find another scanner. Here's what I've been up to:

    Sculpture

Here's my progress so far of my upcoming dragon sculpture. I've been using smellybug's tutorial as my Bible.

    An old sample head:
    Name: sculpture head 1.jpg
Views: 684
Size: 233.7 KB

    The completed stand:
    Name: Stand.jpg
Views: 684

The old armature. At this point the pose wasn't working out so I went back to the thumbnailing stage:
    Name: Old Armature.jpg
Views: 680
Size: 195.9 KB

    Oldest available photo with clay:
    Name: 1 sculpt 1.jpg
Views: 670
Size: 265.8 KB

Same time period, but box included for scale:
    Name: 2 sculpt 1.jpg
Views: 669
Size: 278.5 KB

Photos taken today. A lot the details and muscles are only temporary:

Size: 447.2 KB

    Name: 3 sculpt 2.jpg
Views: 677

Size: 380.7 KB

    Name: 3 sculpt 5.jpg
Views: 655
Size: 413.7 KB

Various textures to appear in the finished piece. 3 can be pushed a little further and 4 needs reworking/scrapping:

    Small update.

Someday I'd like to make a finished, original illustration of Heath Ledger's Joker. For now here's a fun doodle; no ref:

Size: 146.4 KB

Last boss from Metroid Prime. I'll finish this soon:
    Name: prime copy.jpg
Views: 605
Size: 317.5 KB

Edit I've updated the thread's thumbnail to the newest version of the Weavel pic from the first post. I'm hesitant on posting it at this stage because I'm afraid I'll stop working on it. Hopefully I'll finish before the end of the month and post it up.

    First legitimate self-portrait !
Spent a few hours standing in front of a bathroom mirror. The likeness is pretty accurate IMO - a few features might be a little skewed though. Hopefully I'll do better next time.

Coolio. The self portrait is pretty good, your understanding of facial structure is apparent. I pretty much suck a faces. I see a lot of potential in that dragon sculpt...

Thanks again to everyone who stopped by .

I'm so bad at keeping consistent updates. Anyhoo, without further adieu:

    Dragon Sculpture

    Temporary Head Added:

Smoothed out the neck in order to place the muscles. During this phase I was also playing around with some abstract, armor-like shapes on the arms and wings:
    Name: DSC04.JPG
Views: 385
Size: 233.4 KB

Since I hadn't created support for the horns on the armature yet, I decided to remove the head and play around with the design further. Because it's a little harder for me to draw a dragon head from multiple angles, sculpting this would help me envision it from all sides:
    Name: DSC05.JPG
Views: 383
Size: 260.3 KB
    Name: DSC06.JPG
Views: 377

Size: 288.8 KB
    Name: DSC08.JPG
Views: 377
Size: 295.0 KB

Some of the musculature of the arm was put in place. I was highly referencing human anatomy for this:
    Name: DSC09.JPG
Views: 406
Size: 293.0 KB

Since I couldn't find muscle diagrams for crocodiles, snakes, or giraffes, I decided I'd invent how the neck and tail muscles interconnect. This took a lot more planning that I had originally anticipated to get it just right:
    Name: DSC10.JPG
Views: 374
Size: 330.1 KB
    Name: DSC11.JPG
Views: 367
Size: 343.6 KB
    Name: DSC12.JPG
Views: 366
Size: 209.9 KB

Sadly, I ran into some complications with the sculpture, and was unable to finish it over summer. Since I was heading back to my college campus (which is out of state), I couldn't take the unbaked sculpture with me. Over this time though, I will perfect the design, so that once I return home for winter break, I'll be able to finish it. Hopefully the sculpey won't dry out too much.

Lindsay Lohan from the box cover of Mean Girls. I focused on the face, so the body's proportions and rendering aren't that great:

Zero-Suit Samus picture I'm working on. Samus was the only aspect that was made in grayscale, so the overlayed colors are somewhat temporary. I still have somewhat of a long way to go for this one, but I like where its heading:

    Update:
Potential t-shirt design (depending on how well it goes). I'm still unsure of whether or not to keep the bling.

I also have a couple of photo studies that I need to scan sometime. Will possibly post them tomorrow.

Couple of photo studies: I spent about 15 minutes on the first, and ~30 on the second.

Shiiiiiit. Everything in this thread is completely. Utterly. Amazing. All the various works are just so well done- the dragons, portraits, and the CG paintings. Wow, keep it up, man.

The last drawing,- the one of the eyes, is particularly well done. Thanks for dropping by my sketchbook, and I hope you get your creature fired okay.
