    Rife L'rawings

Okay, so I finally decided to grab the whole subject by the balls.

I'll be posting my life drawings in this thread, and no - no random sketches of a dilletantic babble.

    Uploaded in order of drawing.

First 3 are about 2 months old, the rest are today's (May 25 '08 ).

I really think I'm doing something wrong here, but, at least I am trying to solve it. The reason why I decided to thumbnail the sketches is because I always exagerrate the spaces and lose composition.

I'll work on these daily now. At least 15 minutes. Outside or inside, whichever's handier!

    Thoughts, crits, comments are welcome..wysiwyg { background-attachment: scroll; background-repeat: repeat; background-position: 0% 0%; background-color: #b8ac84; background-image: none; color: #060900; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Arial; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; font-size: 10pt; line-height: normal } p { margin: 0px; }

Ok, I'm unloading my sketchpad. Scanned only a few pages, because scanner's a little too loud, don't want to disturbn my neighbours.

I've been drawing these while waiting for a friend to come back (he's doing his job while I keep him company and provide some help).

I always feel that I'm doing something wrong.. Why is that?

    11/25 pages scanned.

One thing I think you should do is slow down. I don't know how much time you have to draw these, but you should be taking your time. When you start applying values, do them in a cohesive and orderly manner. Try shading with the form. If you feel you don't have time to shade that slowly, just indicate where the shadow shapes should be and fill them once your subject has moved. It's pretty easy to do if you just treat your shadows like any other shape you see.

I always feel that I'm doing something wrong.. Why is that?
Because you probably are. But really, it's a good thing, the first step is realizing you're doing something wrong. Then you need to figure out what it is. Ask yourself a series of question trying to isolate the problem. Is it a problem with the accuracy of your drawing? (is your drawing true to your model) Is it a problem with your values? Ask big questions moving to small. If you realize that your drawing isn't accurate. Ask the next obvious question. What isn't accurate? Then what can you do to make it accurate? If it comes to the point where you feel like something is wrong but you really can't pin it down and you've done the absolute best job you can. Post that piece in the critique section, ask for specific advice.

Even when you don't feel like your doing it right, keep on trying. Just practicing a lot will make you better. So just keep drawing.

    Ok, here are the rest!

Scanned the last pages of the sketchpad.

I occasionally date them, but I forget about that sometimes. Some of them were drawn in cold months, so it was a pain in the a** to hold the sketchpad and draw!

Thank you for the advices and refreshment of my rusty memory!
To tell you the truth, there's not much time I get to draw before moving to the next location, it varies between 2-minute to 25-minute periods. I don't have much control over that during the outing with a friend, who's actually working mobile.

I will, however, remember what you advised me here and apply to the life sketches. About treating shadows/tones as shapes - I used to do that with sketches from imagination, but with real life sketches, I always attempt some sort of stitching or cross-hatching (which looks pretty much unsuccessful.. XD ).

Thank you again! Improvement is on the way. :3

    Live Figure Drawing

Well, dang, what luck!!! I found out that there are Open Figure Drawing sessions held every wednesday. Today I lost this "virginity" - finally drawn from a real live model!! Those were the best, most productive and fastest 1:30 hours so far.

Here they are... The first of my lifetime figure drawings. I aim to improve.

Hammering criticisms are welcome! I need those.

Not too shabby, I can feel some of these drawings, they are nice in a way. I would suggest doing several smaller studies for your next life drawings, try to get them really accurate to your drawing. Start light, with your hand at about the middle of the pencil and really try to observe what you are seeing, drawing things even if they look funny or that which contradicts what you know, just draw it. Doing smaller studies may help you to see this quicker - drawing part of the figure or an object for example.

    FACE

Okay, so, I decided to grab that tiny portable mirror today.

Chose a pallette, figured to try cold colors first. 7 colors.

    And went numb.

    Result is right below.

Satisfaction, but noticed there's a fuckload of problems.

AND THE MIRROR IS TINY. ARGH¬!

    Hey

Not bad, I think there is some skew in your face though, for example the ear is bending around like that.. also your form needs a lot of clarifying.
I would suggest you do some more drawings with the face in perspective and then try painting some more..

Yeah, I can feel that too. The skew is probably thanks to one of my eyes having a partial view of the side. The mirror is very tiny, trust me.
    Will do, thanks! PRACTACE

Maybe use a free standing one, or take some pictures of yourself for a while and paint from those.
Keep up the good drawing and paintings thoug! =)
