All these tonal portraits remind of ones found on currency.

I have the same problem too, I can never force a smile during a photo or portraits. Keep up the figure drawing practice.

Soory I haven't been updating - working on my Secret Santa. You'll all have to wait.

    Pigeonkill - I love it.

Hardly can wait to see the Santa spirit Mrs. Spot!

    Actually, Santa already
    visited me this year.
    Oh, I feel so euphoric.

Ha ha ha sometimes Mr plissken you worry me !! those shorts are way to tight mate they will cut off your circulation!!

    Anyway on with it!!

Hi Mrs Spot, hope youre well,

I like the recent drawings, its always nice to see images of real people and not twiggy, stck insect, anorexic girls or heroic muscle head guys. I have always thought that its the imperfections in people that make them interesting, Thats why I have collected so many imperfections in myself, no seriously I have! you just ask the wife, or if you want a complete list my mother in law will happily talk for hours and hours about them ha ha ha ha.

Just in case I dont get the time before it all kicks off, have a great christmas and a brilliant new year, Ok!?

    all the very best.

A great kind hearted lumbering bullock

It's been a while, sorry for not dropping by earlier.

The Self Portrait Day post looks really good. Also, great to see you going at figure studies, the last one works quite well, I think. Keep updating.

Secret Santa done and posted. I'll show you after it's been posted. Time to start something else.

This is tiny - only 6' x 4' and is just the rough sketch.

    I love tiny things.
    We missed you so much,
and I am so happy that you posted now.
This little painting pulled off some very nice
feelings deep in my heart. There is no other
artist great as you are around here Mrs. Spot.
We will wait for the Santa surprise also.

That sounds like an adorable size for a flower painting. Small paintings and drawings are great... one technique I was told was to scribble compositional thumbnails on sticky notes if you're the kind of person that has a tendency to lean far too close into a drawing - keeps all the frames of your image without eyeshot regardless of how slumped over your drawing you are, and you use that as a reference when you move on to the full sized thing.

Not saying you have that problem here, just reminded me of it and thought it was good advice worth sharing.

And hah, take that 20,000 spammers.

I binned it as it was soooooooo boring compositionally wise and started again today. Zoomed in on the flowers. It's a bit shiny as it's still wet.

It is always a pleasure to come here, because
you surprises people in a very positive way each
and every time. Like for example you zoom in
things. I like when you zoom the flowers, cause
there is something mystic within that deed.
Keeping it wet and shiny is also one of my favorite
actions. Generally you did a very good job on
these last flowers, even better than you did before.
I wish you a Merry Christmas and all the best for
    the holidays.

Hey Black Spot, I just wanted to stop by and say that I saw your painting in the Secret Santa thread and it looks awesome; I'm looking forward to seeing a larger photo so we can see some of that nice detail. Merry Christmas!

Happy Holidays. Lot of detailed foliage, I think I know what you mean by kind of boring finding a good composition in bushel of plants. Maybe have a strong rim light hitting one side to make things more dramatic of fun to paint. The lightening seems evenly lite and make some areas look more flat than normal while painting.

This is the picture of it that was posted in the lounge. Actually I think the lighting is better than the one I took at the bottom. It's only 6x4 inches and posting it bigger doesn't make sense. I really would have liked more time on it.

Lovely work on your self portrait and the smaller paintings. Nice to see some simple paintings every once in a while (compared to most of the epic and complex things you usually get around here). Nice change of pace. The vase on the flowers seems a little off dimensionally...but then again vases are always different. Either way, nice, painterly feel to it.

A bit more today. The flower bottom right is finished. I'm building the colours up slowly to get the depth I want with lots of very thin layers. I'm putting a border around it as it will be going into a largish black frame like my Secret Santa.

I like your Secret Santa painting, nice colors and depth, the flower painting looks good too, the finished one and another purple slower has a really cool 3d feel already.

Another update. Felt like doing a drunken SP. Hubby hates it as I look too cross - it's called concentration. Haven't done anything digitally for ages. 30 minutes.

Fun stuff in here, especially the flowers. Flowers are one of those things I have on my 'to do one day list' but I usually end up going cross eyed looking at references before I get around to it.
I've got loads of respect for people who work with oils as well- I had to do a bit for college but my impatience led to a lot of muddy things ^_^.
    Happy sketching!

I think you could play around a bit with the contrast on those flower pictures to make the eye move around better/have points of interest. Other than that I think there's improvement.

    Keep it up.

Well I did want to make the flowers more jewel like. I learned a lot doing this, especially about glazing and how much planning should be done at the start instead of trying to fix things later. This is as far as I can take it. I'll be setting up the next one tomorrow.
