Create an animated gif woth layers¿?

I want to show my painting process to a friend and I want to do it by sending him a gif from the initial sketch and then adding layer after layer.
    How could I do that?

I don't know how you would do it in Photoshop, but in GIMP I start by saving out the different stages as individual PNG files.

    example01.png (1st layer)
    example02.png (with 2nd layer on)
    example03.png (3rd layer etc.)

Then I open the first in the sequence, go to "Open as Layers" and bring in the rest of them. Then I save as a GIF animation and adjust the timing to my liking.

for photoshop, go to window-> animation. in the animation bar you can create 'slides' and set their duration. so to create a gif that has 2 slides, make a new slide so you have 2. Then click the first, and make sure that whatever layers you want showing and show, whatever you dont want shown for this frame hidden. click on the second frame and do the same. then set whatever duration (keep doing this for more slides) then go to file->save for web&devices, then select gif..... there are probably other options to check to make sure it animates so it may take some fiddling.

    Hope that helps
