    Book Cover Competition #2!!!

    Quintessential Concept Art--The Book Cover Competition

    Please read all of the instructions before posting pictures.

    I don't know about you, but one of my first ever art lessons was designing a book cover and it seems to me that that has been the staple of the curriculum for quite a while, so I challenge all of you to do the same again (or for the first time) now that you have honed your skills over the years.

    The challenge is simple. It is open to everyone and the the finished designs will be posted for judging shortly after the deadline. The deadline is to have a finished piece posted here by 12:00p.m. GMT June 15th.
    The design can be either just the cover, or the back cover-spine-front cover layout and can be for any dimentions.

    The front cover must include the title and the author. The author can either be your screen-name, or the sample name Brian O' Reilly (ME!).

    The back cover, if you chose to do one, should include any necessary space for a blurb or quotes, but these need not be written, just implied.

    The title of this month's book is: "Desiderata" which means "desired things".

    To give you an idea of where to go with it:

    [Main Character] has just been reborn (though he doesn't know it). He wakes up in a desert, bursting with energy. Plants grow wherever he steps. He is but a shell, filled with light. The book shal be about discovering power and deciding what to do with it. How to live one's life.

    I hope that leaves it open enough to get your creative juices flowing.

    To keep it interesting, please post WIP pics too, but clearly identify once a piece is finished. One final entry per member.

    Please post if you are going to do a cover, even before you have started your WIP.

    Good luck to all. And Enjoy!

    This is the poem the title is taken from, a poem I have a particular love for:

    Desiderata

    Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
    and remember what peace there may be in silence.
    As far as possible without surrender
    be on good terms with all persons.
    Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
    and listen to others,
    even the dull and the ignorant;
    they too have their story.

    Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
    they are vexations to the spirit.
    If you compare yourself with others,
    you may become vain and bitter;
    for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
    Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

    Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
    it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
    Exercise caution in your business affairs;
    for the world is full of trickery.
    But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
    many persons strive for high ideals;
    and everywhere life is full of heroism.

    Be yourself.
    Especially, do not feign affection.
    Neither be cynical about love;
    for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
    it is as perennial as the grass.

    Take kindly the counsel of the years,
    gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
    Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
    But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
    Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
    Beyond a wholesome discipline,
    be gentle with yourself.

    You are a child of the universe,
    no less than the trees and the stars;
    you have a right to be here.
    And whether or not it is clear to you,
    no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

    Therefore be at peace with God,
    whatever you conceive Him to be,
    and whatever your labors and aspirations,
    in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

    With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
    it is still a beautiful world.
    Be cheerful.
    Strive to be happy.

    Max Ehrmann, Desiderata, Copyright 1952.

    You've got good ideas, with lots of room for interpretation. I'll give this one a try as well.

    Thanks. I do try to keep it pretty open, to see the variety that will come back.

    Great, any other takers? Oh, and remember that the WIP is important. there was little of it in the last comp, but I think everyone finds it interesting.

    I'm in, but WIPs are a problem for me. I work raw in vector--there is no such thing as a WIP technically, and progress shots are pretty much almost impossible to understand.

    Ha ha! Everybody is happy to make a post claiming they will do something. The real trick is getting them to post a final within the time alloted.

    I'll make one in the coming week to make up for my trash talking, but I just wanted to say that telling everybody to claim they will enter before they make a WIP is sort of like bringing coals to Newcastle. There's an amazing amount of "I'm in." disease on these boards.

    Hack, wheeze... what are these purple spots? :]

    I should be able to come up with a piece by June 15... so long as I make a list of all these things. Thanks for posting the original poem too. That will be a great help.

    Great, 6 entrants already. If everyone finishes one this will be bigger than the last. What are your opinions? Is this somthing that should be kept up?

    Yes, and I'd add an additional thing to it once in a while...posters--say for movies, plays or games, or POP for books, art exhibits, special art learning events and gaming cons, etc.

    One of the weakest areas on this forum is the lack of typographic knowledge and it's applications, so I think you would be doing a great service in that area. A lot of the artists here are from the "drawing" end, not the "graphics" end of the art world, and really never developed an idea of why such stuff is important, even if it only means remembering to leave space for it.

    Great tsabu.

    Ilaekae, that's a very good point and a very good suggestion. I won't even "bear that in mind," I shall simply say: Yes, that will be done. Thanks!

    The first thing I did was went on wikipedia to find out more about the author, there wasn't much info. Then I analysed the poem, writing down whatever ideas came to me, I liked the line "everywhere life is full of heroism" in particular. Heroism to me is 'for every time you fail you try again", basically the story of Rocky,"it doesn't matter how times you get knocked down as long as you get back up", and there's, I think it's a Buddist saying that goes,"I fall down 7 times, I get up 8". Reincarnation could be an extreme form of that.
    At first I just had a vague idea of a guy standing in the desert, holding a flower, or the flower growing out of his hand, not much thought just literally following the brief. So I tried that, along with an idea of a beautiful woman walking through the desert just noticing the viewer like a mirage, she being the thing desired. I also experimented with Loomis's informal subdivision, for example the woman, first the original sketch, then next to it using informal subdivision.
    Another idea was a guy daydreaming, and then maybe I could put his desired things in a hazy mist above his head, that idea went nowhere.
    A kid sitting alone in front of his house. Lonliness.
    A kid digging in the sand, maybe at the beach building a sand castle. What's the point of building a sandcastle if it's just going to erode? So I also drew the castle, with the waves approaching it, about to wash it away. Purpose.
    Then just a pose I thought would be cool, but after drawing it it just looked like a guy getting a ball thrown at him, what did that have to do with anything? That went nowhere.
    Then a guy talking to a crowd, preaching like a messiah, performing miracles, that idea didn't interest me.
    Then an idea popped into my head of a group of kids in a desert, I was thinking they were planting something there, but then I realized it was a grave. Then I noticed I had inadvertently placed them in a triangle, which is a typical arrangment for religious figures. I then realized what the desired thing was, "life after death". Hope that there is life after death, that we'll meet the people we care about again. I plan to have some mysterious plant growing where they're standing, it'll be red like a phoenix, the title "Desiderata" will also be red so that the connection is apparent. I figure that these are the siblings of the main character, their older brother, who will be reborn many years later, younger than them. The cover will function to get the readers into the story, even before they read it, the cover begins before the story begins. The themes that interested me are 'family', that a family doesn't have to be related by blood, loneliness, purpose, and love after death. That's what I want to get across by the cover. Still have to finalize the composition, and figure out when it's happening so I can dress them appropriately.

    Here are a couple of progress shots. I'm a little farther along than this currently. I have a ton of court and client meetings tomorrow so my third progress shot goes up Friday. The final has to wait until next week because of a couple of other paid tasks I have to finish by the 26th.

    this looks interesting, and since my own contract is coming to an end, i may actually get time to join in. Just one question? this is totaly open to interpretation, so im guessing there is then no actual need for any kind of character or figure in the actual image?

    little further on the WIP - getting base color ideas down, little more thought into title font, etc. Still a ways to go though!
