onwards to better things (new stuff: 18th june)

hi my name is Paul and im 19.
I completed an art foundation course last year and have now started Ba(hons) in Illustration at Norwich university college of the arts

been meaning to start a sketchbook here for a while and thought i might showcase some of my favorite pieces from the last year, as well as a place to put some of my massive backlog of sketch pages.
also this should serve as some motivation to keep working over the summer
    comments and constructive critisism welcome.

..ok i just realised how late it is, il upload more tomorow

Hey Paul, you've got some good little sketches here. Liking the expressions in the faces you've got all combined together. You've got loads of different styles here and that's no bad thing, as it just shows you're good at experimentation.

Maybe take a few of your sketches and try them in colour. Keep up the drawing from life too, it becomes invaluable towards your observation skills.

thanks man, i really hate feeling like im confining myself to one style so i try and work in as many different ways as possible.
i do do alot of colour work, and ive noticed that most things in this thread are my black and white sketchbook pages, so lo and behold!:
more colour stuff from my final major project earlier this year.

Hey your drawing's coming along. There's lots of influences there, although I could be wrong in what I'd relate them to personally.

Don't meant to say that you've got your style and that's it. It's just something that just develops and before you know it people recognise your work, no matter what medium you work in.
Your influences all show through as well, I'll never be rid of my Manga influence for example as I've done images no way related to it and people still guess that I'm a Manga fan.

You must be really busy as it's your final project, but hope to see some more work here soon.

hehe yeah i see what you mean, i try to expose myself to as much influences as possible.

i actually finished that project as it was the end of my foundation course in june, and now im a fullly enroled student at norwich university college of the arts WOo!!
dont have much acces to scanner at the mo so sketches may be infrequent, however heres a 'concept' image for our first project; im doing an anti-advertisement animation for coca-cola and this pic is about how they drain the wells dry where their factories are in india, meaning farmers cant grow their crops.
decided to not do this in the end, but do one about how they murder trade union workers in columbia.
il post the final product once its finished which should be around friday.

aand heres a work in progress, the scholar uagen zlepe hanging from the left underside, sub-ventral foliage of the dirigible behemothaur 'Yoleus'

k heres the first try at filming my animation, reason you can see the edge of paper is because two concentric boxes show up on the capture software and i was told that it would only take stuff from the inner box but it filmed all of it.
oh well i need to loop some of the segments a bit more when i film again anyway.

hey man, i really like the animation, succinct and simple. your sketchbook pages further up look great, really quirky and interesting. Also, i was actually at Norwich college yesterday morning looking round, it looks like a fantastic place. I'd honestly be really interested in an 'insiders opinion', so to speak, as it's defo in my hit list for uni applications. But yeah, good stuff, it'd be great to see some progress on this thread.

thanks man, yeh ive only been here a couple of weeks but im loving every minute. the college has a reallllly good reputation for turning out top-notch graphic illustrator/designers and getting them into high profile companies at the end of the course.
the city itself is quite chilled out from what ive seen so far and all the students are really cool and everyone is focused on what they're here for.
also generally a large student population due to UEA being on the edge of town as well so no shortage of student related happenings.

i like the looseness of your linework, but I don't like your hatching at all. I think they don't mix up too well, because you need to be loose to get those flowing lines while you need to be precise (not necessarily slow) to make good crosshatching.

As I said, your linework is better when you are looser, like first one in post #5, or fourth one in #3 (if one doesn't mind the hurried up hatching)

    Keep doing and posting them!!

thanks for the crit sodAp, i have noticed my hatching feels forced sometimes. i think it comes about when i start out going for a line drawing but then try to add tone anyway, something il definatly work on.
glad you like the creatures as well wookie.
