hey, good to see you've begun.

right, now i see them there is a similarity in the pencil lines like you said. only you can be the judge of if you've got a good likeness but the third portrait as you say, appears to be the most progressed. i find it a right nightmare working with real media so im not in a position to crit really, i would say forms seem to some together better for me when i cover bigger areas with tones early on, hard to do with pencil i know, but it lets you know where you are early on then the little details take care of themselves. hope this is of any use to you

its looking cool so far, and to do any anatomy from memory is excellent. keep it up!

    Update no. 1

    HumanNature- thanks, posting more now!

Maths- thanks for the encouragement and advice! I will try and put larger forms down first

    Alright more sketches!
A self-portrait, figured doing one in which I am smiling would be nice

And some studies of my left hand! The contrast got all screwy when I tried fixing it in photoshop, which I have to do since taking a photo of it washes out everything terribly, sorry!

    thanks katsgod and maths!
sorry for the really long delay in posting here, I've been finishing up with finals, and I just had my last one today. I'm all moved out and back home, finally getting over my cold too, so thats a good deal. My sketchbook should start to be a regular thing now. And if its not I want to come back to it and find a bunch of angry artists yelling at me for not updating!

maths: some of the sketches are from a Loomis figure drawing book, and some of them are done from that posemaniacs site.
silverpoint was how many drawings were done back in the old days before graphite/lead pencils were used. It involves coating your paper with a paste that reacts with the silver that you use to make marks with. If you are interested in chemistry at all, the paste contains a zinc oxide, which is what reacts with the silver. If you want to know more than my simple explanation I'm sure there is info you can look up on wikipedia or something.

So the plan now is to get some stuff posted tomorrow, I have some drawings from life drawing class, and maybe even a digital still life study. So there should be some stuff to finally look at!

Alright its time to get some sleep, a bit tired from moving and helping friends move their stuff out of the dorms too. Bed time!

    something new

Alright, here are some digital still lifes I've been trying my hand at. Bumskee's digital painting in photoshop thread has been really helpful, so I figured I start doing some digital stuff. I'm not sure if I should post my drawings from class in here, since they are more finished... should they go in a different forum somewhere?

an apple from friday. Didn't really get into any details on this one.. first attempt, so I'm happy with it.

a banana from yesterday. Got into the details more on this one. These are quite fun, so I'll be doing a lot more of em.

hey man, yea just post whatever you have, sketch or finished pieces, i'd like to see them. still lives looking cool, i'm told that keeping your brush opacity on 100% helps build your confidence in colour and shape, and keeps that soft digital look at bay. do you have career stuff in mind? like, what you want to do with your art ?

    far too long

I haven't posted any updates in ages. Summer just makes me lazy. Anyways here is some stuff from the last week or two. Most of these are drawn from photos or from life, a couple are straight outta my head, and one is drawn from one of coldrum's sketches. His sketches are a lot like those that I've done in ballpoint pen, and oh yeah, coldrum is really good. http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=98483
You can probably tell that my sketches are very influenced by coldrum's

nice sb, keep it up. your sense of lines has already gotten better from your first few posts to these last few. your using your lines to define the mass.
have any color work or more finished pieces?

hey bluefruitbowl, thanks for the comment! as for colored or more finished stuff... I've been neglecting those. I may be able to find an old CHOW I did a while back. But its in black and white. So yeah no color really, its something I think I should start working on. Very Nice sketchbook by the way, I'll leave a comment!

alright here is a sketch from late last night

I think the main thing you should work on is 3d space.
That will advance your studies very fast.

HumanNature: I can see what you mean, all I really have are sketches of people, no environment or anything. I'll definitely start focusing on volume and space more, Thanks!

You have some good stuff in here.
Here's a suggestion for you (not really a crit), something that I think colud benefit your art...

Try doing some sketches, drawings with minimal lines. Some bold, simple cartoon/gesture type images. At the moment one of the areas of your work, that I don't like (yes personal taste) is the excessive, unneeded linework on your figures and faces making things look 'muddy' and uncertain.

    my sketches here... http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=92997

Those life quick sketches are awesome! Keep them up. I like your style of shading. Now take up on some anatomy and you'll be killing it soon!

Also do some longer studies for the self portraits. 45min to 3 hours maybe.

sevans: thank you, I definitely do need to be more certain with my lines. I'll keep that in mind and try some clean drawings

yousa: thanks, I'll certainly try some longer self portraits. It's been hard to sit and do one for a good amount of time when I've been working so much, but I have a day off on friday so that will be the perfect opportunity!

thought I would post an old chow since I happened to run across it. I believe the topic was Grandma the serial killer. going to be doing a fair amount of drawing today so there will be more

so I purchased the skillful huntsman the other day, love it. Really cool to see those concepts. So of course I had to try some thumbnail sketching, as I've never really done that before. very different from what I usually do, but its kinda fun!
