Did you oppose the orphan works bill yet? The clock is ticking folks....

I sent my letters to Nancy Pelosi and friends today. The link at the bottom is super easy to use. ConceptArt.Org has the power to help put a stop to this. If you are fucking around in the lounge and have not written, please take one minute of your life and do so.

IMPORTANT MATTER FOR ARTISTS - we must take action today! Do not lose ownership of your art!

    Hi everyone,

The text below will be self-explanatory. There is an important issue facing us as artists, related to the copyrights of our works, which corporations wish to control and take at our expense, We must put a stop to this immediately unless you wish to see others owning and plagiarizing your art.

This is too important to ignore please participate and forward to your others.

    House version:
    http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h110-5889

    Senate version:

    http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=609199
    http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=121132

Congress is rushing these bills through to a floor vote. The House will start marking up their version of the bill at 2:00 today; the Senate will do so tomorrow. To try to stop this bill, we first need to slow down the race to get it passed.

    FROM THE ILLUSTRATORS' PARTNERSHIP

Take Action: Don't Let Congress Orphan Our Work

We've set up an online site for visual artists to e-mail their Senators and Representatives with one click.

This site is open to professional artists, photographers and any member of the image-making public.

We've provided sample letters from individuals representing different sectors of the visual arts.

If you're opposed to the Orphan Works act, this site is yours to use.

For international artists and our colleagues overseas, we've provided a special link, with a sample letter and instructions as to whom to write.

2 minutes is all it takes to write Congress and protect your copyright:
    http://capwiz.com/illustratorspartnership/home/

Please forward this message to every artist you know.

Did it 10 mins ago. That automatic letter thing is neat. Posted it over at deviantart too.

I'm so glad that you have posted this Jason.

I've already faxed the appropriate contacts in the US.

For International - here is the direct link to the IP letter outlining why it is damaging to International artists.

    http://www.illustratorspartnership.o...archterm=00267

I'm in the UK - so I am currently figuring out who to fax about this bill here besides my local MP.

There is a massive list of signatures on the Illustrators partnership forum, lets hope this can be stopped again.

well we are in the middle of emailing 110k artists about this. I think the folks getting the letters will have a pretty solid response. If any of you are mods at polycount, cgchannel, or the other communities you might suggest they do the same.

What about artists outside of US? I post on forums too so it's also my concern.
I'd like to send letter but in the sender information I am limited to choose only states for the address.

EDIT: Sorry. I didn't notice link at the beginning of the webpage for non U.S. artists.

Do you know what I find incredible BS? Is that a government not my own can pass this and I'm supposed to sit quietly bend over a pedestal and take it up the behind. Oh and the link for us internationals isn't that helpful as it tells us fax or mail these....do you know how hard it is to find a fax? Any email addresses would be helpful....I know they can can delete stuff like this in a couple of clicks but I cant seem to find a place with a fax!!

I just e-mailed them. The automatic letter really helped, especially since I didn't know they were trying to pass it today. Thanks for the reminder Jason.

Yeah, any emails for people not US citizens?

I can fax tomorrow from work, but that's a bit late, innit?

*will use her husbands representatives as well as he's a US citizen*

Just emailed my reps yesterday. A friends actually sent me that link yesterday, I was really glad she did because I was thinking about doing so and had no idea how to write a letter to them.

I actually posted a diary blog on DailyKos.com, a huge liberal political blog...to try and get their help. (They love this sort of thing)
I got a few responses from artists and a couple from the other side of the coin. If you're interested please check it out, I actually learned a few things.
Some stated that there are a few good ideas in the bill, but it's horribly written and leaves so many loopholes that literally makes it that much easier for our works to be essentially stolen. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/5...028/462/511107

This thing definitely needs to be stopped.

I've written my congressman and representative twice. Once when we first got the bill numbers, and once when IP got us the Capwiz link. Also, my roommate's girlfriend works for our representative in her office, so I asked her to bring it up in person! Hope it helps!

Hey Jason, I saw the site announcement/pop-up.

I know it's nice to give a link to an alternative point of view and all, but don't you think linking to 'Six Misconceptions About Orphaned Works'

    http://maradydd.livejournal.com/374886.html

hurts your case more than it helps, since the point of that whole LJ post was telling people not to freak out about the legislation? It's also the first non-mp3/text link.

    For non US citizens

I too have the fax problem,
I went to the websites of the institutes that were listed on the foreigners page.
These are regular question adresses, so it might take some time before they read this.. A fax (if possible) would probably be quicker..
Don't forget to clearly state in the e-mail that the mail is meant for the person in bold letters

Send out the faxes through my computer.
Everybody go send out these protests. Now is the time to do something.

edit - for all the peeps in the international department,
anybody can fax from their computer through sites like efax.com. They have a 30 day free trial. No fax or modem or whatever needed. Just use that to fax this shit and forget about it.

how? I'm on this page: here for international folks and so far I can't find a way to do this. I would really be surprised if there was a fax machine in my whole town, and aparently snail mail is way too late.

    WhuddoI do?
EDIT: And since CA, deviantart and any art site on the net has been talking about this for months, why are we just doing something now?

I replaced one link with the actual bills so people can make up their own minds.

blogspot is unreadable in China (censorship here is thick and blog sites are not accessable). so it was the only link I did not read but I figured all sides should be covered. I read the bill and I think that they need to hear from artists and creatives prior to pushing forward so I am in full support of notifying our govmt about our creative concerns.

I don't care if there are three threads about it. There are a thousand stupid threads in the lounge. This is the most important topic we have faced in a long time, legally, and so I feel there needs to be full and ample discourse.

Maybe this is ignorant of me but can't the senate and congress just ignore all these letters and faxes and attempt to pass the bill anyway? how will this stop or slow them down?
