    Illustration Rates

    Hi,

I've been really hesitant to make the switch from graphic design to illustration, so for the hell of it I applied to a half dozen illustration positions throughout London, just to see if anyone would want to hire me.

Basically I've been offered a job where the employer is looking to create 30-33 cards within two weeks for a educational game. I have no idea what to charge or whether to ask for royalties etc.

Any advice from anyone who's worked in illustration would be extremely helpful or if there's a thread around here with such info could you please leave a link.

    Thanks.

Standard answer is to check the GAG book.
Also check AOI, especially since you're in England.

there are no standard rates in the illustration biz. it all comes down to what you want to do it...and what you can do it for. easy thing is to charge 25 percent more than you want to ask for it so there is negotiation room.

This book is like my bible. I'm a bit lost with pricing as well, but this book lays out everything you need to know where to get started.

30-33 finished illustrations in 2 weeks sounds really tight, be sure not to undercharge for rush jobs. Ask yourself what feels fair to you (in terms of time and effort to be put forth) and do not go lower unless you feel that you're also being compensated in some other way

Tensai - thanks for the link, its extremely helpful.
Jason Manley - that's some very useful advice, the client has been quiet resistant in offering me a quote or mentioning what type of budget they have.
Blue - Thanks blue, I'll defiantly check it out.
DavePalumbo - yeah it seems really tight, but I'm really looking forward to it.

You guys are really great; I didn’t think I'd get so much information in such little time. I’m about to send of the quote I’ve calculated to the employer, thank you for taking the time to help me out.
