    Thumbs up Ron Cobb

I don't know if anyone around here is familiar with Ron Cobb, but he's been around forever - done work on Dark Star, Star Wars, Conan the Barbarian, Alien and shit loads of other things that are far too numerous to mention. (we have him to thank for Hammerhead, along with a couple of others from Star Wars )

I discovered him about twenty years or so ago and he's been a massive influence for me - one of my many icons. I simply can not get enough of his work.

Anyway, I discovered he's getting a website together - not *a lot* there yet, but enough to peruse and enjoy, so I thought I'd share it on the off the chance that someone else around here might dig his stuff if you've not seen it before:

    All the best,

The works seems very nice, the site is pretty brutal, though.

As conceptual design goes, Cobb's work on Alien is seminal. I have Colorvision and can't recommend it enough. He was a big influence on me as a youngster, as well.

Yup. I would say that Cobb is one of the under appreciated pioneers in our field. He's got a great talent for cannibalizing everyday objects and junk in order to make something feel practical and real in a way that a completely fabricated and stylized design just can't pull off sometimes. The whole design motif of the Nostromo in Alien is such an amazing example of how that harsh practicality can really come alive. He deserves as much credit as Giger for making that film scary.

You ever see his self-actualizing mandala in colorvision?

Really, when you think about it pairing Cobb and Giger together on one film was a brilliant. You couldn't find two designers who were so different from each other in style that still managed to compliment each others efforts in one film perfectly.

You can spend days looking at that thing and still not find everything in there. Maybe being stoned might help
