    James' Sketchbook

Hi everyone, my name is James, I am 19 years old. This is my sketchbook. G-G-G-G-G-G U-NIT!!

honestly though, I am going to be posting daily one-hour studies. Just in the last couple of days I have been blown away by how much I have improved, so I am really excited to see how far I can go.

This goes without saying, but conceptart is a really great place which has inspired me to go after something I would have otherwise considered unattainable.

This first one is from last night:

    These are from tonight:

I was told today that I should stop trying to draw faces since I am still a beginner. I am going to start focusing on the body from now on, and try to see how the different parts relate to each other. It is still really hard for me to consistently see things three-dimensionally, as well as seeing how the parts relate to a balance with gravity. Here are some crappy drawings I made from posemaniacs, as well as a sketch of some dude's face. I am going to stop using a mechanical pencil when I draw, and move to charcoal or some other kind of pencil.

Thanks man, I really appreciate it.

Your portrait sketches do a really great job at capturing likeness by the way.

I was so excited about getting better at art that I couldn't go to sleep. I decided to draw something in photoshop. As I was drawing so many different things were clicking in my head. All I can say is that I felt like I was in the zone and it was a total rush. I spent the last hour erasing and redrawing random stuff until I came out with this:

So far this jelly-bean looking thing is the best drawing I've done digitally.

    Hi.
I like your sketchbook and that your'e keeping at it!
It's great that you started with the gestures and try to figure out how the anatomy is working. Do you have any ref. books? I recomend Andrew Loomis books about anatomy!

The jellybean-look-a-thing is sweet! maybe you could try to add a background in a greyblue-ish color to make it "pop" out more and erase the annoying white.

    Wish you best of luck!
    /M

Thanks! Ill keep the white thing in mind from now on, white is definitely too bright to fill the whole picture. I have the loomis books as well as bridgeman's book. Neither of them have a detailed step by step guide to drawing a figure, but it is probably best to figure it out on your own anyways.
