CHOW 115 :: read the brief

CHOW 115 :: read the brief

    ROUND #115

    -------------
    DESCRIPTION

    Time for some CHOW badassery:
Near future East African Gang Leader/Warlord. Keep it real - Near future as in within the next eighteen months to three years, not fifty. In other words, no sci-fi.

Character can be male or female. They should be battle hardened from a life time of living in a world that most in the west can not imagine. Refer to to the reference provided - character needs to be able to fit into the world in a believable manner. This character also has a pet of a singularly nasty nature - a savage, harnessed beast, used only as a means to induce fear in his enemies. Pet at your own risk.

Stay away from cartoony characterizations this round.

    REFS
    One - potentially disturbing.
    Two
    Three
    Four

From Black Hawk Down. Forget the song, pay attention to the environment and the Somalis.

    REQUIRED:
    CONCEPT ART SIDEBAR:
Include at least three developmental sketches for your character design - they can be thumbnail roughs, but make sure that they are identifiable and show some progression in your concept.
    No side bar, no poll.

    -------------------------
    DEADLINE
    SUNDAY, May 4th, 2008

The way the deadline works: if deadline is on a Sunday and your image is posted on that Sunday 23:59 your local time it's a good entry.
In fact - as long there is Sunday somewhere on the planet your entry is ok. I will make the poll sometimes Monday evening my time (GMT - 8 ) yet I'll have a look at the last entries.

Well painting a picture of an intimidating pet is one thing (all's fair in art), but...

Seeing a real photo of an actual animal whose life is summed up entirely as a "cool prop" to some illiterate immoral fuckhead is hard for me.

The poor thing... He looks so sad. And nobody can even save him.

EDIT: Also, sorry for derailing the thread. I'll hush now.

PK, you're fine, and I appreciate your comments. I am terribly sorry that the image disturbed you.

I'd just like to point out that just because an image is used as a reference shot, does not mean that it is *condoned* - by me, or any one else.

I find *any* sort of animal abuse - any abuse of any sort - animals or people, deplorable.

All that said - in reality, I have just as much concern for the guy holding the chain as I do for the hyena at the end of it.

    All the best.
    ~Oreg.

Looking up stuff about the children soldiers will also give good reference. They rove in bands, even if called "army". BIG WARNING: If you do, you might get some really nasty stuff, we're not talking pretty.

This should be an interesting topic. And it will require a bit of research and reference and reading to get it looking as realistic and believable as possible. It's a mature topic...

Oregano - I'm assuming you want it to be a bit more toward the poverty side of things - so I'm guessing nothing like Idi Amin for a final? (In other words, nothing too regal or clean, but you're looking for something a bit earthy and gritty.)

Correct. He was too far removed from the day to day action on the street.

Figure a post apocalyptic character - because that's what's there now.

Wow, what an intriguing topic. Everyone should watch hotel Rwanda in preparation. Not sure if I’ll have time for this one, especially considering how much research should be done for it, but I really would like to. I’ll see if I can manage it.

On a note about the hyena: the truly sad thing is that it is only the tip of the iceberg as far as animal cruelty goes. It is so sad how depraved people can be.

Sweet Topic! Dogs and cat's in the U.S. are pretty bad off here. My local animal services Euthanizes an average of one cat or dog a minute 24 hours a day. The math on it is staggering.

Threw some thumbs together, I think I like one the most but, will probably end up doing 2 or 4.

I'd join in this topic but I'm afraid I might produce something so crap it makes the serious issue in my brain look like an utter joke

OREGANO - this side bar thing is killin. most of us barely have time in life to do the chow itself and now an additional sidebar is required..im sure thats required in the industry but this is isnt the industry...most of the best chows ever did not require it.

I agree, I rarely have time in a week to complete a full piece much less a sidebar now. Is this going to be a common thing now, required for every CHOW?

Maybe the topics with sidebar heavy requirements should be two-weekers, rather than one? Perhaps a beefier sidebar in addtion to a full-tilt illustration, to justify the extra week. (I must admit that I wasn't a fan of the sidebar in the last CHOW, but that was mainly because I was trying to justify it within the context/concept of the character, but something more exploratory like a character sheet for Sam Smythe works for me.)

Personally, I'm also hesitant about jumping into this CHOW, mainly due to the fact that I barely know anything about the region/politics/history. By the time I figured out what was going on there and had completed my research, I probably wouldn't have time to draw I would want to do this topic justice and get it "right," since it's very contemporary.

Yeah I agree with the sidebar issue. My first reaction was "cool!" until I realized we still only have a week to get it done =/

grenogs- if you had bothered to read the whole brief, and look at the ref we provided, you would have seen that the first ref is *exactly the same guy*.

    REGARDING THE SIDEBAR:
Okay, since that seems to be such an issue, let's switch it to a concept art side bar - you should be doing development sketches for all of your characters anyway - *regardless* of the project. So include at least three of those - they can be rough thumbnails and unfinished (but identifiable), but the main focus for the side bar is to show some thought process and development in the characters that you are creating.

    Better?

    All the best,
    ~Oreg.
