A MAXIMUM OF 45 ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED IN THREE CATEGORIES:
CATEGORY 1 - Beginner's category
CATEGORY 2 - Intermediate's category
CATEGORY 3 - Advanced's category
ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:

(hope it's not too big, haven't been on this for too long.)
Steven mcQuinn, action film star, had it all. Fame, wealth, women, you name it. Until one day he turned down an admiring fan who wasn't a woman to his liking (she was only 10 years old). The girl cursed him outright and threw the rose she had brought into his face. The next day, Steven woke up to find out he had become a monster. With their most famous star gone, the studios soon collapsed into ruin, and Steven took to haunting the place on his own, forever doomed to an unjust fate. Until one day a different woman showed up...

Here goes nothing ...
Johnny Fire was a great musician and quite a handsome fellow, but his envy towards other bands was even greater than his guitar skills. His band, "Violent Peace", always performed solo.. Being the frontman, he got alot of groupies... but he made a mistake: he let Jovanna Darkspell (goth chick, opera singer and cult leader) into his quarters after a show. In his words:
"Right, so took this chick to my room, we were ready to go, ya know <hehe> and all of the sudden her eyes freakin glow and she starts blabberin' sumthin'! The next thing I know it's morning. I get up from the floor, I look in the mirror and go <wtf, thought those shrooms wore off..> But now I know i'm stuck like this, so might as well enjoy it, eh?"
An interesting aspect is that "Violent Peace" has risen in popularity alot since Johnny's transformation... The band still plays only alone...

And here is my version of "the Beast" i believe that a mask can hide more than a person can imagine... you don't know what creature or broken man lies beneath. Anyways i didn't get to finish it and i jumped the 3rd step (the refining and rendering part) . I will post the finished work in 2-3 days in my sb ... for now this will do .
P.S. This is my first chow

This modern Beast is a titan of Industry, an affluent power broker, a maverick businessman, rich as Croesus. To the outsider, his rough appearance is seemingly cruel and cunning, his business ethics and practices shrewd and direct, though his tenderness and compassion are as immeasurable as his great wealth. He has everything at his fingertips except true love. When the company owned and run by Beauty's father was nearly bankrupted, it was the Beast who stepped in and voluntarily bought it out and folded it into his own assets, saving her and her family from financial ruin. His only price was her companionship.

At that moment, Scrap could not think of anything other than protecting the fragile container. The fair-skinned intruder saw the container as something pretty and utterly unfitting for the ruins she wandered in; Scrap, however, knew that she was about to pick up the single most precious thing to him: a chip that stored his memories from long ago, and his only remaining tie to humanity.

Well, I screwed this one up. I didn't read the part about the expressions needed and I've run out of time. Oh well. I wanted everyone to see my finished piece anyway. I'd love some feedback. If you can go to my sketchbook and share your criticism with me, I would be appreciative.

The Beast of New York
Denny was a ladies' man. Unfortunately, he pissed off the wrong girl and she put a curse on him, turning him into a beast man until he learned what true love was.
Naturally, Denny used this to his advantage: with his charm and his new animal magnetism, Denny was even more popular with the ladies. His chance of finding true love are pretty slim, as he's having too much fun getting laid on a very regular basis.
( As a sidenote, I might actually do something more concrete with this one. Has potential.)

A product of a longevity experiment gone horribly wrong, is our Beast. In his vanity, he attempted to blend his DNA with snake DNA and wound up in a spiral of nasty genetic mutation that left him half man, half snake. Only with a supplement of DNA from the right individual can he ever fully regain a fully human form again.....
I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way...

Good entries all, general note - TOO MANY BEAUTY AND THE BEAST TYPE BEASTS!
here are some crits
RMick - Good idea behind the concept - probably would have worked better as a line art, the colouring seems rushed, or not finished enough. Would have liked to see more of the body.
BlackRobin - Nice shape and feel, i would have liked to have seen some more detail on the beast, textures etc. Also i'm not sure enough of that orangy object he's holding.
Shardana - Great bw render and facial expressions. I think this is leaning heavily towards davey jones and predator...so be careful of that. But good to see the "beast" idea taken into an aquatic theme.
Bluebloodedpanda - I think this works fine within the style you have done it, but i think u need to show more BEAST, this is more ROBOT. I think the tank idea you have could really be explored and see how it could effect him and make him more beastly - maybe the beast is in the tank hooked up to wires etc and is controlling the robot?
Buckster - Good take on the theme, pretty stylish - i think the edges of the painting are encroaching on the wings at the top a bit too much - the render is good, but i think the torso needs to be addressed in terms of anatomy
Hot Blooded - lots of anatomy issues, i like the pose but i think the body needs more beastly aspects, not sure whats on the chest. The stripes on the arm could be elaborated upon, maybe he has beastly tattoos all over? The face sheets also let the overall image down - considering you did a nice enough render on the face of the main piece.
Jockemon - Good rendering and idea, but the main figure has issues, his balance mainly, I see you were after that striding look - but its not quite balanced yet. Its partly that the two thighs look like they are going in the same direction - see what happens if you shade the thigh on the left to send it backwards a bit. Also a presentation note - i would have done the faces much smaller and less of a feature. Making them the same size as the main figure can distract. I can see you rendered them nicely and added great expression - but it wont matter if they are smaller cos they are good!
Lunian - I see you took the same rose idea approach! I think u have great expressions, and the beast figure is nicely done with the bulky feel to him. I think the male model idea is fun but i think u need to make more similarities between the model poster and the beast to make it really clear. Rendering on those purple bits needs attention - they let down your other line art and shading.
Manaburn - Some cool things here - the skull lets it down tho - mainly the perspective on the skull. Also that arm thats abstracted i'm not to sure about. It looks like and andrew jones inspired piece which isnt a bad crit, but be careful of that.
Markito - Great render, nice idea with the rose/woman - but this is far to similar to the typical beast idea. The point was to explore the idea - a re-envisioning.
Strybjorn - This is a great render, but its a praying mantis. I think it would have been cool to see more of a man and mantis combo. Also the face expressions only really change his eyes, you could change the mouth more, do 3/4 views.
Carnifex - Quite a fun beast! Looks like a cartoon animated cel type character, and the rendering and line work is pretty solid. Its simple but effective. Would like to see more than just a loin cloth on him, seems to simplistic. Bonus point for a mini illustration!
Chate Noire - Again, like i had said to markito - this is the beast we all know. Its a great pic and render - but you should have thought further outside of the box.
Madhatter106 - Funny idea, good take on the original idea of who the beast was. There could have been more to the beast u painted - particularly in the body shape. Also i think you should have done more face expressions in the same theme - with his face on more magazines down the side of the image
Nightblue - This is a really inventive one - great making him a robot and a huge scale. This is a good render - some issues where the background is too strong on the right, but this has explored the re-envision well. But watch out for that typical beast face like lots of others
Timmy The Turtle - Good take, nice to see him being a beastly rocker! Nice faces but it almost looks like a group of 3 beasts - but thats being picky! Nice final render too.
Tin Can - This is fun - but a lot of anatomy issuse. Use more more more more ref pictures! Also your shading would benefit from using larger brushstrokes, which is hard to get right but you will benefit from using them. Also i'm not sure why he is nude?
Draw - pretty cool beast - but i think the pose is a bit awkward and the anatomy is off here and there. Also i would want to see a bit more detail on the skin and textures. Good faces but the last one is a bit messy.
Tavarilyn - Good idea behind this, could have been more detail on the jacket perhaps. The faces are ok but need some ref maybe to get those face shapes and angles just right. Also i would want to see more "beast"
Tom Garden - thats me! Well, i think i could have spent a bit more time on the face and sold the idea of a man in costume. Waned to add some roses in the ground too but ran out of time. The rendering on the right is quite weak and could have been sharper. Not mega happy - was hoping to do a more original idea for the beast instead of pig man

hey thanks alot tom yeah,i was trying to think of something different than just the loincloth, but somehow i didn't get to anything, and nobody else had any suggestions. i pretty much pictured the whole thing as animated film, probably in 3d pixar style.
chate_noire (it's pretty much a perfectly modernized version of the beast we know. the expressions are great)
nightblue (although i'm kinda bummed you didn't go for a non-mechanic creature, the size difference still is something that makes this stand out. expressions could be more exaggerated)
April 22nd, 2008 #27
Thank you, Tom Well, the reason why the expressions look so different is that I wanted to present him in different scenarios: -left-right---> nervous smoking beast, suity, confused beast and cool dude profile beast. Thanks again, Cheers

To Tom Garden:
Thanks for the critique. I actually considered doing it in greyscale, at first.
Lessons learned, I guess.
Again, thanks, "dood".

Strybjorn - my favourite. I love the funny expressions and the overall originality of it; the colour scheme and consistency is also brilliant. Well done.
And Shardana - I love the facial expressions. It looked like a hard character to pull it off due to its alien (or predator ) look and gormless formality, but I think it worked.

don't be mad!
My first attempt at giving my opinions on peoples work, so apologises if I seem too blunt
Before I do start I'd like to explain what I'm basing my assessment of them to in terms of sticking to the brief and general proffessional look to the pieces. first in the brief it does state a contemporary beast, having done abit of research this basically means any art style or creation done after WW2. To me that meant a modern day beast - replace the castle with a semi detatched house and a fiat uno in the driveway kind of thing.
Second I look for those pictures that have used referance, I used to believe that art is art but after my college course when I was forced to referance everything I found that my artwork improved and still does. (the reason I'm taking part in this isn't just for fun, it's actually to force myself past what I usually draw and gain experiance, artwork for a portfolio and learn to stick to deadlines - I'm a slacker by nature ) ANYWAY! enough rambling to the comments!!!
RMick - I love the idea and the pose of him standing there with a pint is actually amusing, but the image itself to me is very flat, next time try and get a mate to actually stand there in the pose and set one point of light. Getting the right lighting will add more depth to your work no matter what the style
BlackRobin - Great looking beast and I do like the fact that in character and colour it almost seems like a children's illustration. But the brief did state that it's meant to be a contemporary redesign of the beast, you can put him in a sitting room scene or a field with a castle in the background, there is nothing really linking him to the contemporary part.
Shardana - Very original! I love the tentacles and the facial expressions - especially the smiling one kinda makes him look like he has a tentacle mustasche and the detail in the clothing shows you clearly had some referance there I would love to see this one in colour to see what colour you'd use for his skin heheh the only downpoint I would put on this would be it doesn't look very modern, infact the opposite it's very old fashioned almost victorian style.
Bluebloodedpanda - Can't get musch more modern than this - I think the style suits it over all but I personally would like to see more detail in it - but thats just me I perfer semi- realistic over extreme cartoonish.
Buckster - Interesting choice for a animal/human combination I personally wouldn't have gone for bat since it has too many links to vampires rather than beasts. But the overall shading and texturing is beautiful, especially on the wings.
Hot Blooded - I really do like this one, the pose, the proportions even the expression, completeing the image to his feet in my mind I can almost see him on rollarskates
Jockemon - I like the backstreet gang member feel to this one, the pose screams 'gangsta' giving the description of beast not just in looks but in nature - very well done in the expressions as well.
Lunian - me, I confess whole heartedly I slacked off on the scabs, he's meant to have mange as well but I couldn't get the look of them right and rather than risk messing up the picture I left them with abit of shading. I've just noticed as well I forgot about the rose tattoo thats on his left breast - it is still there just under scabs. >.< If I was going to do it again I'd remove the rose he's holding and put the tattoo on his right breast, more central to the picture and give it the glow effect.
Manaburn - I'm not overly fond of this one, but it's more the style than anything. Other than that I think it's a very original idea maybe needs abit more to contect it with the beauty and the beast story.
Markito - The lighting, the over all drawing and the colours are wonderful. The beast himself looks very much like the Beast from beauty and the beast about 50 years later and the background doesn't give it a very modern feel to it.
Strybjorn - I like the fact you went for an insect rather than an animal and praying mantis' have always creeped me out so two thumbs up for scary Beast (got attacked by one while in South Africa...started wearing a hat/helmet while outside) the colouring is very smoothly done and it actually looks like carapace rather than shiny plastic.
Carnifex - this one too mee is abit too simplistic, It looks like something that had been whipped up in about 20 mins without referance. Though the illustration at the bottom is nicely done I think you should have brought that same detail to the character designs. - two mouths is a very nice concept tho
Chate Noire - I love the whole 'bad ass biker' vibe this one gives off - would have been cool to see his ride in the background (if he had one hehe) The colours are very nice as well especially how the blue sets off his brown fur without overshadowing it.
Madhatter106 - I've made a comment ragarding this one before, I'm glad the picture itself has been lightened and less dark, but to me the head and body don't seem to match stylewise in that the body is quite realistic and the head is very stylised.
Nightblue - My personal opinion is you have the best redesign of the Modern Beast here. The idea, the look, the pose and the lighting is fantastic.
Timmy The Turtle - Great idea for a rockstar beast - and the attitude of the average rockstar is probably that of a beast The facial expression are really good - especially the smoking one
Tin Can - Very detailed in the texture of the skin, kinda creeped out by the lack of clothing (then mine was also very naked so that probably moot) But there is nothing really modern about it and there could have possibly been abit more referance used for the overal anatomy.
Draw - I like this one for the fact that you haven't used a known animal conversion and made up your own, the colour and look of the Beast says this is a monster and only someone special would take the time to look deeper - I personally would have started running but then I'm a coward ha!
Tavarilyn - Brilliant idea for a snake man and I like the fact you didn't give him lizard legs, is he venomous? - I think it would have been better in colour though
Tom Garden - I'm very impressed with your piece in that he hasn't actually turned into a beast but is just taking on their guise. the rose he's holding is beautifully done and the vibrant colour to it really draws you into to it kinda mesmerising. Like a few of the other pieces though it's not very modern to me. (And thankyou for the critque on my piece, I still have much to learn and must work harder )
