Mister Jack Art; Updated 13|07
Well well, been lurking here a little now, but I thought I'd finally getting around to putting some stuff up.
So... Enjoy! and crits and comments rather encouraged; hopefully that'll keep me motivated, though I have been more so recently anyway, which is definitely a good thing.
Photoshop for the first two.

wohoo! great! to criticize you would be cocky, but ill give it a try. teehee
äääh uuuuh .... maybe it becomes possible to post critique if you post some paintings/drawings of humans (or humanoid creatures).
and the shading seems a bit impatient on the last one (a problem we share)
welcome at CA

Nice start! I love the pose you gave the polar-eagle; it works well for both its bird and bear parts.
The background in the first one is a little too dark and messy for me, but the creature/robot looks really cool.

Thanks for the responses.
So here's a WIP piece, some Starcraft fan art; I haven't done too much scenic sort of stuff, especially not with vegetation, so it'll be interesting to see how it comes along...
As well as another one, which I spent a rather ridiculous amount of time on; that was pretty much my first foray into a full scene (or, at least, it was the first real time I've pushed one to completion) but I'm pretty happy with it...

love your work, can't say I have any crits so far for ya, but keep up the awesome posting action!

I've seen your StarCraft work before... where was that?? hmm hmmm hmmmm Nevermind... Great stuff, man! Really inspirational.

I've got a fair bit of stuff up at starcraft-source.com; it's actually a fair proportion of my current output . . .
(I'll put some here then) as well as progress on the jungle piece - might be a little easier to say something about it since it's a little more than relatively formless blobs. I'm enjoying working in colour, too, which is something I don't really do enough.

Woah nice stuff in here!
I really like the "anlter-man"; the fact that you put in so much deer anatomy and managed to make it look like a freak frankenstein experiment. Nice
That starcraft piece is very nice as well. Like to see more!

Long time no postie . . . (this place is so busy if you're not on top of it all the time things just vanish. still..)
Since the rough piece is there I may as well put up the finished 'medivac' pic, though that's quite some time ago now; Also, another SC battle scene, in a different style (for a change).
some photoshop foolery; perspective's out but it's fun still...
Some more things in photoshop, a little more 'worked on' . . . Getting there, slowly but surely.
some quicker fiddles again, just for fun. (well, not just fun, but mostly).
And here's to more frequent updates!
(really should attempt to get into the CoW again, (not that half an attempt counts as doing it at all); a good reason to practice..).

Hey Mr J, Awesome pieces here. Its looks like your painting with an almost opaque round brush and just adjusting the size for the majority of the time, is this so? im curious because my brush work sucks and i spend more time fiddling than laying paint down, do tell? ;-)
August 16th, 2008 #15
You've got it spot on there; I barely use anything else. (my left hand is practically glued to the option key for eyedroppering). Occasionally I'll adjust opacity or use a soft brush for really subtle blending but I find things just get muddy if you I do that too much. I do have opacity set to pressure as well so if I need a light wash (so to speak) I just make the brush enormous and draw lightly...

Amazing stuff man. Extremely well-rounded. You have great characters, mechas, monsters and environments. I love every bit of it.

Nothing new but it may as well be; a little fresher than some of the other stuff, anyways. For Variety, mostly.
First; photoshop, maybe 3 hours? Can't remember now.
Then; sketchbook pro, photoshop
and finally Illustrator.
crits n' such appreciated.
I had a sketch for the centaur where I was happier with the (still ridiculous) proportions, but I didn't scan it at the time so it didn't end up as well as I'd've hoped. I'll put it up when I get home...

Wow, you've got some really great concepts in here. The environments and industrial creations are really strong, man. Good stuff, looking forward to what you'll post in the future.

So, updating with a bit more stuff..
Here's the centaur rough; prefer perspective with the hoof + his chest setup there; looks slightly less ridiculous.
And something quick from this afternoon when I should've been doing other stuff at uni... Proportions are pretty weird but I liked the feel of it.

Couple of things . . .
Ice! speedpaint... Don't do nearly enough landscape so... composition could use some work, but anyway.
some sort of vehicle... I'd just been to the Vespa and Ferrari Galleries in Italy and needed to do some shiny metal. Should practice that more, but anyways.
Good to see practicality's high on my list of concerns, yes?
and a process shot of sorts... I prefer it about halfway to the final; the face needs serious work, and the pose really stiffens up along the way.
and a sketch that isn't anymore (PS, as usual).

This stuff is amazing.
I'm lost in your scribbles. Mine have to have so much more detail for me to add anything on top of them. But yours are like ...notes, reminders... Not foundations?
Dunno. But it's just amazing to see your process.
I love the semi-bionical gigantic creatures.
