I'm a lil bit confused... this tdome sounds like a a character design contest and is focused on that, now when i see this:

"Entrees must be full color illustrations emphasising the character design."

... I'm confused by the full color illustration part, does that mean the characters need to be placed in an environment? or does this just mean the characters need to be in full color? probably sounds like a stupid question, but I thought I'd ask before I did and finalized pieces.

Also, since this is a character design thing, can we show multiple views of the character? ... like a turn around?

BTW, I'll say it again......... GREAT T-DOME IDEA!!

"...full color illustrations emphasising the character design"

    not black and white.

It 's best to do it in color to show the materials that the costume/armor is made of. Gold, iron, silver, stone, etc. We also want to see the artists skill at working with color.
You can show multiple views if you'd like; it's up to you. It's your presentation and how you sell it.

You can place them in an environment but keep in mind that it isn't the environment design that will be judged. The emphasis is the character.

Question about the part where it has to be influenced by Ancient Civilizations.

Does that mean just one, or many?
Like the warriors picked up a few things here and there?

    thanks

    pick one

Pic a civilization and focus on it. For example: Points against you if you have a Roman dude slinging a weapon that is clearly Persian in design. More brownie points if your character is in fact, without a doubt from...where ever. Does that make sense?

if i'm understanding right, we are designing a character that has fought in the t-dome for at least the last 1500 years? kinda like the dudes in highlander? so we can only have one cultural influence? not like a bunch of stuff that they picked up through the ages?

Salieri: Sure you can make him a veteran of the area if you want. but he just has to have armor/weapons/costume from ONE ancient culture. Not a hodge podge of collected cultures. just one, not two. Two would be too many;as would three. Four would definitely, most instantly land you posish on the losers pile. so keep it in the range of exactly one ancient culture influence.

Gah, the weapon I designed for my particular entry has no real origin. The character however, his clothing etc does. I don't want to change his weapon because its so awesome, so I think I will start working on a new entry..and just leave the other for something else.

hi, not to argue, but i've been re-reading the brief and as far as i understand it, i dont think the character necessarily has to be of one culture, only that he originated from one and that the final design is influenced by it.... plus 3000 years is a long time for something to remain static and uninfluenced by other cultures. it seems like this is extremely open (which is good and makes me happy). so i guess this means i am in disagreement with what mcotie is saying even though he is in charge of this section of the forum.

I was just checkin' ancient civilization stuff and came along somethings that might come in handy for people to take into consideration:

The colussus of Rhodes. (or any of the other 6 wonders of the world)
    Gladiators.
    The spartans.
    Babylon
The myth of the Golem (Jewish lore)
Greek pantheon of gods (possible costume and weaponry design, very descriptive.)
Mayans (for a really slick interpretation of central american lore check out a comic called Battle Gods).
    Azteca
    Native American?
    Inuit lore (eskimo)
Germanic Tribes (russel crowe kicked these guys' asses.)
    Jason and the Argonauts
    The Illiad
    The Odyssey
Clash of the Titans (movie, i think we all know or have seen it)
    African Mythology
    Norse Mythology
    Byzantian
Vodun spiritualism (commonly known as Vodoo or Hatian Vodoo)
Christian Mythology (take a peak into the bible, it's actually quite descriptive.)
    Ancient Russian Mythology.
The three thebian plays (very good book of Ancient Greek Myth.)
    Transylvanian lore
Most "big monster" moves have an ancient creature that's been locked away for at LEAST 2000 years...
    the myth of atlantis
ancient Hawaiin or any other island lore. (yes, that includes greenland and iceland).
Read "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman. (LOTS of gods and descriptions in there.)
    Ancient Egypt. (duh.)

If i think of anything else, i'll post it in here, i just thought it would be nice to have a large grab bag of cultures and identities from those cultures to get a more focused idea on what people want to do. Enjoy.

hmmm, i was afraid it might be confusing......

salieri- the character originated from one civilization, and he/ she is still representing that civilization.

    just make it cool.

Joshua I mean Mac, I mean...
That is a very nice piece. You're making it tough for these guys for sure.
Especially since we don't know who painted it.

    salieri

yes. If you made a guy that was actually from Egypt in the ancient times stepping into this arena he would definitely get his arse kicked. I guess the best example I can think of off the top of my head is the Egyptianesque characters in Unreal Tournament 2003. They are obviously not from ancient egypt, but they are clearly influenced by one culture. Does that make sense?

Ok ok, the project I was working on fits that kind of description. I am going to throw in a bit more culture though before i begin painting him. This is a really awesome project.

Arabian/Persian would be acceptable where Ancient Civilizations are concerned right?

Grinn, yes. as long as it's pre-middle ages Persia. Benzo's original idea was to keep it all before the middle ages.

This is pretty cool, I'm having a lot of fun researching my idea and learning a little in the process. Hopefully all the ideas I have in my head will make their way to my hand!!

Good luck to everyone! Can't wait to see what the gang has to offer!

I will make a completed pieces thread and youpost them there. If you want to wait till the last day that's fine. And you can make as many changes as you want to your piece up to the deadline; just update your submission.

Capt. Harlock: Are they pre- Middle ages? The middle ages range from
mid to late 400's AD to mid 1400's (correct me if I'm wrong students!). So if what you are researching is before that...go for it!!
