A departure indeed from your usual subjects :p The landscape and figure are beautifully rendered and well integrated. My only criticism is that I wonder if the elbows should be pushed out further to make the pose more believable.
    You really imply space well!

Hey Kelly... just dropping by to say hi and peruse your latest! Whip it looks great.. I'm a sucker (ahaha pun) for good simple black and white work.. and the contrast on that piece is really nice. The last wip is definitely looking better.. and I like the fact there's all kind of colours in her face... should be very convincing when it's all done with. As far as nitpicks go.. I'd be tempted to lose the round halo of cloud in the sky unless it has some significance... it jars for me against the really nice diagonals the rest of the cloudscape has and echoes the shape of her head too much for my liking.

Are you using a tablet for this, or just a mouse? I ask as it seems like none of the brush strokes you're putting down have any opacity drop off on them. Her mouth looks to be a little off centre up to the eyes and the mouth... if you were to draw a centreline through the middle of her eyes and the back of her nostrils and continue it, the mouth would most likely lie off it to the right a bit. Either that or bring her noseline out a little more to the right to compensate. Perhaps softening off the very edges of the bottom lip where it meets the corner of the mouth would make the mouth a little less harsh and 'pasted on' too... blend it more with the rest of the features, which are nicely rendered!

Mors has a point with the elbows... if you hold that pose yourself, you'll notice that the elbows point out to the side more, and the arms form a triangular shape.

Those nitpicks aside, it's actually a great piece.. so refreshing to see someone tackling a more unusual subject rather than your usual pretty girls. I'd really love to see this finished.

Mors = tried to fix the elbow thing - Thanks!!!!

zephyri = Totally agree with you on cutting down on the ring thing, it has no meaning to me what so ever!! Paste mouth - LOL!! Yes I just took paste and stuck post-it lips in place... Yes you are right my dear!! I am not to the finish yet and scattered as usual! Popping all over the map - but this is next... And then finishing other hand too... but fire's cool and I had to burn some stuff.

I'm not sure where you are going with this one, only that you seem to have an amazing way of getting there despite some strange beginnings. Lot of artists do this, I used to do that and I think it coincides with a sort of sense of rebellion. The thought that "I know I have done great work in the past and in reliance of that can start with any degrees of idea" and just pull it off. Trouble is that doesn't work sometimes. It's a risky proposition however I did not abandon this philosophy overnight. Your reckless K, but I guess that's what I love about your work! Ganbatte!

13 | 13 || There's this air of both mysterious intrigue and a dark peace about this piece, a very sunken face against the illuminated background, such a great juxtaposition in contrast, simply lovely. There's an sparse but subtle presence within the piece, a calm in the destruction or visceral nature of fire against meditation...I dont know. I feel that this piece might evolve further, I believe. In this state, is this piece complete or to what degree is completed?

your image looking realy great, your colors are on point! there some things i have too crit, the overpaint ive done is a bit chaotic so i listed the importaint points here:

    1. the face lookin a bit flat in fact of:
    - the nose in the wrong perspective
    - some light is missing
    - the outlines of the eyelids are a bit too deep
    - the mouth is in the wrong position

    2. the proportions of her body looking a bit strange in fact of:
    - lookin like she has 2 arm joints
    - shoulders a bit beamy
    - show more of her neck
    - add some movement to her hairs and add some shadow on the right side of them. will make them look more dynamic
    - use intesive rimelight, will make her stand mor in the foreground

    3. background
    - dont forget to erase the outline of the dead-tree and the side where the lightspot is hiting it

pls dont missunderstand me i realy like this piece! but it where to bad about this beatyful work when this little mistakes would not be fixed up!

keep working kelly, it realy does credit to my that you asking me for help

    cheers lateman

    Wow this ones going great.
Your rendering (as always) is fuc#ing dope, and that background bloodly awesome!
As crits go I think Lateman has hit the nail on the head with his paintover,
(nice job by the way man) and once you get the lips and arm('s') in the right place you mite be there!

    keep at it kelly,

Hi ditchman I agree, these praying hands have seen better days I actually captured them and made them thin then tried to make them desaturated and lost most of my detail? I will fix and agree, you have a very good eye and read some of your comments last night, very good comments have you, FYI and I like your avatar quite a bit too!!!

ha, yeah. I'm much better at spotting others mistakes than improving my own short comings... though I think throwing a critical eye over other's stuff is also of some benefit to the critic.
I'm glad you like my avitar, it's from a painting of mine that's a few years old, but I get the feeling you will quite like it (it has a bit of a femme fatale in it)

    check it out

#261 || Yes, Kelly, I agree on the hair. It's a bit wayward and seems too irrational against the calm and peace illustrated within the character. Be aware on the atmospheric depiction upon the hair. Use a reference, if you haven't yet, for the hair blowing or flowing in the wind. The aspect of realism will justify the plausibility of the hair and the wind, maybe carry the wind effect throughout the scene. The lava background can be effected mostly with several wisps of steam and heatwave distortion to the air surrounding ( a great study of atmospheric perspective manipulation. How interesting to see someone attempt that. )

    Happy painting!

I'm a big fan of your paintings of women, great stuff....keep it up!
As for your latest, the old woman's skin is great. Love the colors. The only thing that bothers me is her right elbow, our left...now that it's defined a little more, it looks to be a little high. I think the proportion from her shoulder to her elbow needs to be longer. Though I could be wrong, as I'm no expert. Great job so far though, can't wait to see it finished.

    just talking and not painting!

Ditchman, I did look and it is an amazing piece! Necro romancer!! So cool, also we do learn a lot by crits on other peoples pieces - we learn to really look and solve the puzzle?
f1guremeout, I have a very strange ref. for this hair and it has to go away sadly - it was actually the inspiration for the piece, but may have to do some other hair now and thanks for the tips with the smoke, that may look cool. "(a great study of atmospheric perspective manipulation. How interesting to see someone attempt that. ) This sounds like a great challenge indeed!!
dcriler = Yes I think it looks high and short, the elbow, thanks so much. and thanks for liking the women, this is the hottest yet due to fire, LOL!
Lakka = Thanks Boom to you on all your pieces too, This has been the most fun, this face of hers, thanks again.
