CHOW 111 :: Sam Smythe and the Scurvy Skalliwags

CHOW 111 :: Sam Smythe and the Scurvy Skalliwags

    ROUND #111

Sam Smythe and the Scurvy Skalliwags
    -------------
    DESCRIPTION
Main Character(s) for the Children's Story (age 7-10): Sam Smythe and the Scurvy Skalliwags.
Choose one, two, three or all four characters:

Sam Sheridan Smythe lives in Smithtown, which as a small matter of note, has been inundated with Skypirates of late. Big, scary, overly hairy, absolutely barbaric, and simply rude Sky Pirates. Only Sam knows why.

Cynthia Sandleburg, Sam's neighbor and best friend, and the only one who knows how to get rid of the Sky Pirates and send them back to the Cloud Cove.

Spot, the most worthless watchdog that ever cowered beneath the back porch, and Cynthia's terrified terrier.

Captain Saunder Sunder Skinner, the evilist, scarriest, scummiest, surliest Sky Pirate that ever flew the unfriendly skies and pillaged the unwitting suburban towns of the Southwest, and leader of the Scurvy Skalliwages, Inc.

This is a fairly open topic, and designed to have some fun with. See what you can you do - but keep in mind what it's for: you're creating characters for a children's book - not full blown illustrations this time around. Include character studies - expressions, stances, costume and artifacts, etc. You don't need to do an orthographic, but you want to get a real feeling for who these people are. We want something silly and fun, so no hard realism this time around. Artwork needs to finished, not sketchy.

Awesome! This is something I wouldn't want to miss. Count me in...question though, you say no full blown illustrations, what will our entries consist of then, except for studies? Should we do one final with all the chosen characters on it (like a cover) or seperate pieces for these characters?

What I was referring to specifically was the trend in chow to do one highly illustrative piece, with no character development concepts included.

This time, the focus needs to be the character development concepts. I'd advise doing ONE sheet that includes all characters (assuming you do all four). How you organize it is up to you.

If you feel that you want to include a "book cover" as well, that's fine, but that *will* need to include all the characters.

    Ciao,

yeah, I like the sound of this; childrens book characters are a challenge.
    - What kind of age bracket are we talking about? Is that up to us to decide? I know from mild experience, that the age bracket will define the style and complexity of the each character...just summink to think about...

It says right at the beginning of the description that it's ages 7-10. Ye might want to give 'er a closer look.

Just to clarify for myself, we are allowed to do only one character correct, it is not mandatory to do all four correct?

You can do as many or few of the four as you like, it just has to be one coherent page.

From what I understand, If you do the design page you can do between 1-4 of the characters, but if you do a book cover illustration, you *must* include all four.

Daestwen is correct: If you choose to do a book cover type illustration, we would need *all four* character concepts.

    ...this sounds like fun.

.....also, Oregano, I think the description should say "orthoGRAPHIC", and not "orthoPEDIC", that is.... unless you mean that we should consider the possibility of corrective surgery for musculo-skeletal ailments....

    thanks!

this sounds really fun... i dont usually do stuff for chow or any other thing, but since i have a bit of time i might give it a dabble...

so am i right to think that because its aimed at 7-10 yr olds, the characters should be a tad cartoony, not very scary, easy to comprehend and brightly coloured?

    Not necessarily.

Take a look at some of the children's lit and illustrated stories that are out there. It's *amazing* the spread of styles that you'll find.

That said, what you suggest is certainly *not* out of place.

sone one, looking good so far. I like how you built his form using light, and I hope you'll light up a little more of him so his design is clearer.

ryuloulou, your Cynthia's cool =) She's just asking to be a red-head, doesn't she? I really like her color scheme.

But of course, for the most piratey pirates we all should look at Pyrats, if for no other reason than the fact that, once again, the French are schooling us Americans... literally, schooling us, as it is a student film:

    Pyrats Movie!

    I'm always up for pirates!!

...assuming work doesn't get in the way, of course...

    Cheers,

I just realized my design of the dog (spot) is eerily similar to the character in "Lady and the Tramp". I was wondering where the image in my head came from; so that's gonna have to change

    Really cool design, Chate Noire
