Jordy's sketchbook 2 wips added, 23th of may

    Hey all,

It's been a while since i posted on CA. I felt like starting all fresh with opening this new sketchbook, first of all i finally got my tablet (wacom intuos a5), i improved a lot (i think), I got my new computer, room and i just bought a new sketchbook. So why not add in a new thread.

Small introduction: My name is Jordy Knoop currently located in the Netherlands. Just got 16 last month and i hope to be a concept artist one day .

Ok guys here my first piece done with my new tablet. I used mr.d's, cole's technique kinda came out nice.

    Cya,
    Jordy

Hey buddy, glad to see you starting a SB here!

tip number one: hit up anatomy hard and fast
    http://www.scribd.com/doc/10338/Andr...essful-Drawing
    ^
    Loomis

Dave and Cole's techniques work fine... for them. But you my friend, are lacking in the colour dept. The image you posted above shows how much knowledge of colour your lacking. Go study colour theory, better yet stay away from using different layers and just paint on the background. Both Dave and Cole usually start with grayscales, but they don't just slap colours on an overlay and call it a deal. Theres alot to the process like messing with the value/tones and refining certain areas before adding in warms and cools. Believe me when I say this, thats only 10% of the process... you left off at 5%.

Overall, just experiment with your work and keep drawing. Oh, and don't forget to post those life studies

Thnks for the reply. And yea i am studying anatomy a lot, i agree its not too strong in the painting but i seem to suck when im painting something when the sketch was done in ps. I always get messed up allready before i start to paint. About the layer thingy. I did actually use only 2 layers but yea i sure need to study color theory although i didn't think it to be to much of lol.
Anyway here some wip shots for those interested.

    The sketch:

    And the grayscale:

    Hi jordy,

I think your character is really fun actually. Coinpurse pretty much laid it out for you though. Doing still-life studies is always a good benefit I find when digitally painting also. A good hard study of something like a apple can help you tons. Keep on posting and practicing

Nice sketch jordy, the end result is pretty sweet. I know you study hard, so scan some stuff in and show us. Draw from life a ton too, Neaten your line and work on your rendering and all that jazz. Just keep it up you'll improve rapidly.

It's nice to see another highschool artist here!

Line quality will come with confidence I think. Just slow down and make your drawings, even if they are boring old studies, quality drawings, with good line and shading.

I really like the character concept. On his right arm, I'm guessing those are sort of "tribal markings". Splash some of those markings all over his body man~ pimp him out!

Check out my sketchbook sometime. It'd be nice to keep in touch with a young'n like me

I feel like you faff too much with the pencil.

Try practising with pressure to give your sketches more impact. Right now, all the marks merge into one solid jump for me.

    Nice stuff.

    Hey guys,

    @Miles: I sure will mate

@Lilnebo: Thank U, very much appreciated

@Davezilla: Hey, thnks ill pop by ur sb

@Hajime: Yea i agree i never saw penciling as a medium on its own because with my comics it was only for like setting the idea down and i would finalise it whith ink anyway. So i learned myself to sketch reall sloppy. Now I am starting to see it as it's own medium.

Been a while since i updated. Sorry had no time because i was working my ass off. Like drawing till 2 am every night. Anyway here's a new piece:

I am gonna try and update this lil book at least 2 or 3 times a week. Expect some sketches soon I think I improved my line quality. Now to lazy to scan heh

nice work man, keep doing what you're doing.
I'm wondering why you left that much uselfess space n the last one, and avoid hind things in pure black, placing this figure on a ground plane and ging him a ground shadow could help finish this up.

    ciao

The satyr looks cool but to quickly boost it, try cropping the space to get rid of all the empty space and maybe add a few slightly lighter shades around the top of the legs. A really nice moody piece though, you're improving fast my friend.

im in the same boat as you, 16 and desparately trying to improve, you have started well, but make sure when you draw you are concious of your line quality, mix heavy lines with thin lines appropriately.

Sweet overall! I think you could be a bit more subtle with your values in the digital art. I think you might want to be more careful with the use of high contrast, only use black/white where you really want the viewer to focus his eyes. Looking forward to seeing more.

    Peace.

Massive improvement over 3 posts o.o Guess it was the time in between.. as you pointed out.
I really like those 2 last piece's, the last egyptian one reminds me of Eddy (Iron Maiden's mascot).
