hey sky. something caught my eye about ur pics from imagination, the nose always looks stretched. i figured out why, the whole face is too long. start with a basic upside down egg and fit the proportions on that. just a thought. lemme know if thats any help

Lateman Nice character, i like Especially the black and white technique. I am pretty bad at digital at the moment, however your character has inspired me to do a pencil sketch. I'll also work on the digital. Thanks man

Jack Hey dude, that piece of advise is totally helpful. I noticed that myself as well with my most recent character and wrote a little note next to it, however i didn't realise it was the length of the face, so thanks for that . This latest one has a lot of anatomy problems Cheers.

Sorry i haven't posted in a while, i have been a tad busy but i'm off this week so expect regular updates! Ok, so i've been doing some studies focused on eyes, i plan to move onto studying the rest of the body and then i'll come back to some facial stuff. My latest character shows slight improvements however there are a lot of problems with anatomy. I also need to focus on wrinkles in cloth and tone + line...and of course digital painting!

    Thanks

Nice studies, and I see you work on various subjects, which is great.
In general I think that your proportion needs more work on it. One thing important is silhouette. It is the most significant feature to figure out whether the drawings or painting is wrong or not in my case. So it might be a good idea to lay down just big black shapes, and then go into the details.
It works on me quite well, hope this be helpful. Keep it up man.
It should always be bore in one's mind that he must be responsible for his life........

Unsharpened Hey man, thanks very much for your advise. I never really thought about creating a sillhouette before, i'll do that from now on with each character even if it's a simple outline to get the proportions correct. I'm loving your sketchbook by the way, your studies are inspiring! Cheers

Ok so here's a WIP, a study. Unfortunately i haven't been able to churn much out today even though i've been off. Any crits on what i'm doing wrong and how i can improve my painting would be great. So far this has taken me way too long.

    Thanks

Jack Thanks man Yeah it's a photostudy, however nearer the end of the painting i looked at the photo less so that's why the mountains are so bad. I thought i'd leave it at this point instead of dragging it on too long. I've got to learn to speed paint with effective results.

I'm leaving the digital paint at this point. Going to start improving my pastel work some time soon, it's the traditional medium i'm most attracted to at the moment.

    Thanks

Hey, i haven't updated in a couple of days, it looks like i'm doing nothing! Well i've done a few studies but apart from that i have nothing to show. I need to work harder really. I'm back at college so i've waisted what was left of my free time really. Anyhew, i will update as much as possible!

Anyone who looks carefully at the character bust will notice that he has a weapon slung over his back slightly similar to Lateman's weapon on his female character, hehe

    Thanks

Lateman Thanks dude. It's good to know that i'm going somewhere. I need to work on my digital loads though. Cheers

Here's some uniteresting coloured pencil studies along with a Hogarth study. Sorry i haven't been updating, college has given me quite a bit of work to do.

    Thanks

I haven't done anything in a week! I need to get my act together. Yeah i've been a bit busy at college but i have next week off! Yay!
Here's two character designs, there's quite a lot of anatomy problems and they're both very small. I will work on a larger scale next time.

    Thanks

Yet again it has been nearly a week since i've updated =/ , i really need to make more time and be disiplined.

Anyhew, here's an unfinished sketch of my mate as he sat around just wearing his boxers...yes. The face is rushed because time was short (eyes =/) and his left hand is wierd.

    Thanks

    Nice drawings.
I would suggest (like everyone) to keep at it with anatomy.
I would also suggest buying Bridgman's Complete Guide to Life Drawing.
It's incredible and insanely cheap on Amazon.com.
Try to get it, it's 350 pages or pure genius, haha.
It will really help with studies.

Nintendo_zombie Thanks for suggesting that book but i already have it and i did get it off amazon, hehe I need to do more studies from it however, i'll make sure i do some soon. Thanks man.

Here's the basis of a digital painting i'm doing of some Lexus from Minority Report, it's not a very accurate interpretation. I'm going to try and colour it as well.

    Thanks

kelly x Thanks , hopefully i'll improve enough over the summer for my work to be fairly impressive. Cheers

This is the coloured version of the lexus so far. It's not so great, needs a lot more work. Any advice on what i can do better would be great, feel free to destroy me.

    Thanks

mysociallink Thanks man You should start a sketchbook, it'll be cool.

Here's some bridgeman studies, and some firearm designs plus an odd speed sketch. Nothing great yet unfortunately.

Hi all, i probably won't get the time to do much tonight so i've posted an unfinished character design. There are a lot of anatomy problems and i cheated by giving a side view on the face. I'm going to make an effort to make time to draw and paint much more.

    Thanks

This is more in reference to the earlier pieces but maybe try to create volume whilst trying to avoid making outlines. It may give your figures/faces a more fleshy look. With the face in particular, paying close attention to how the angle of the skin moves over the face. It may not look pretty at first but you can change that later.

Other than that, I see you capturing some good expression on those faces. : )

Hi and thanks for the comment in my SB it means a lot to me! ... I looked at your SB and notice that you may have something that I have... when you block color in your environment pieces and the cars the proportions come out really well and your colors are rock'in - the line work seems to give you a problem when you do your figures (lines kill my work) Buy and down load James Kei's figure tutorial -- it is on the front of this site! There are two types of artists linear and optical - I have a feeling you are optical... Anyway, you asked how I paint without lines and this is how, first I block in color and light and then build form from there -- I can't draw to save my life -- only draw to block in form -- also I use a technique called "the envelope"--which basically captures a form in order to block in the shapes and micro break down the shapes within the shapes -- these shapes become a human form and take a while to do but, it works for the type of person who has no natural line ability at all like me -- I may be wrong but give these things a try. ... I hope this helps you. Kelly I can't find my book on the Envelope -- write to me on my SB and I will hopefully find it and tell you then.
