    iamgAle.sketchbook. update 8/25/08

Welcome. I am gale and I'm new here in CA and I have decided to make a sketchbook.

So for my first post, these are some old stuff. All traditional. I don't have anything new to show. I need help in color theory, character design, environment, perspective when it come to bodies, and atmosphere. hehe

    gale,

theres some really nice work here. insofar as the stuff you need help with, i can't really crit yet because i'd need to see some work with concepts, perspective etc. i think your color theory is good from what i see here, i think you have a great sensibility with a pencil and you can really play with line-weight. i'd like to see some more of your work, that first picture is the winner!

hehe I know, I don't really do things which i don't know how to do. I don't have any work regarding perspective and the other things which i need help on because I'm too pathetic to do them knowing I would fail. *I am pathetic*

    ...but that's before. Now i want to try new stuff so i can finally develop what I have. Its just that I haven't done anything yet. ^^;

    Another post:

    hehe

My old stuff again. These aren't my best works. These are the work which I don't really like but I'm not sure what's wrong with them. Anyways I don't intend to change or make some improvements on these but I would just like to show these for critic. So this is how i do things. There are a lot of things wrong here and I tend to do the same mistakes again. ^^; They're somehow in manga style, I guess faces are easier to draw in manga.

    Hey gale, welcome to CA

Nice start! Your pencil drawings are my favourite, your line has a delicate feel to it that I like. I'd love to see more of those! Your coloured work is definitely good too, esp.the ones in your first post.

From what you mentioned you needed help in, e.g. environments, atmosphere and colour, I suggest you do some speedpaints from photographs--not from imagination! At least to start with.

Good luck with the drawing and keep posting

    Update 3/13/08

AsaB : thank you! I have been meaning to do some seedpaintings but I just don't know how to start. hehe I've never done seedpaintings before because I spend so long with my works, i just can't help it! but i'll try it anyways.

ohomoho : hehe, I've noticed that a lot of people here are not fond of manga, hehe I just started drawing in anime style because I thought it was the easiest way to draw. I don't have much time on my hands to keep on drawing realistically. But I'll try my best now. ^^

You've got some good traditional stuff in your first post. The task is trying to get that knowledge that you get from drawing realistically to power your imaginative stuff. I think that you can start by doing studies from life to help better your knowledge and train you hand and mind to draw what you see. Colors seems decent, you just need some practice at picking colors learning how saturate and desaturate to give atmosphere in an environment. The four main things that I preach when it comes to environments is Design, Composition, Color theory, and Mood Setting. anatomy porportions and all that other good stuff comes along with doing things. M@ will tell you that, its all in the planning. Check out his work when you get the chance. YOu should be glad to have M@ posting in your sketchbook, that clown won't even post in my sketchbook, LOL. I'm Jealous. Keep working at it. I will keep you informed when I have been relenquished of my mentoring duties. Later and keep posting. XD

i love your traditional work. somehow i see you tend to struggle a bit with the colour pallette some in digital. i personally feel you might be using a program that really doesnt suit you... have you tried something like painter or open canvas or art rage?

I really am having a hard time getting my knowledge in traditional stuff into imaginative stuff. thanks for the advice!! will do!! *salute* Atmosphere is one thing I really am concerned with.

28chelseaslater : watercolor portrait? yeah maybe I'll try that. ^^

bakatron : thanks! and I have painter but I'm still not familiar with it. I still use photoshop, but I would really want to know how to work with painter and get the best out of it. It gets confusing at times. hehe

Nice starting Gale! Is that your name, right?
My favorite is the one with 2 teenager kissing, the posture of the girl is just perfect!
About your colored stuff, I like the watercolors too, but the digit have too much saturation to me! Maybe you could try to find a softer palette!

    Update march 15 | 1:36am

Hello again everyone! I am currently working on these two works. Comments and critiques are always welcome and apreciated!

This is a portrait or a kid, I'm not sure about the colors and I didn't quite get the secretive expression he had on him in the photo. help.

This is my first ever painting using PAINTER. ha! It was hard though, i couldn't control my brush strokes.

This is a fairy. or at least that's what i intend to do, problem is I don't know how to place wings on that kind of position. again, if anyone can give some advice, I'd really appreciateit.

Thank you for looking at my sketchbook! I think you have a really good feel for environments in your work, you have done some very nice representations of plants, water and landscapes. I look forward to seeing more

hey, thanks for stopping by my sketchbook.

one thing that seems to be pretty helpful is watching how many lines you use. it seems like it's better to be more direct, so when you draw 20 lines think.. would 10 lines work better insead of 20? i think it's called line economy, but i'm not sure. it's helpful because it'll help everything look sharper, and it'll help you learn how to do good lineweights.

i think a good example is that self-portrait you did, especially when you drew the chin/jaw.

angolan child and the giant's causeway

I wanted to do life studies and environment studies, but somehow i finished only one environment-ish work and then I proceeded to make a portrait of an angolan child because i really loved the lighting of the picture.

Hey there!, btw thanks for dropping by my sb.
I really like your sketchbook the manga nice but the traditional stuff is amazing!!! really your penciling is superb and it all looks very good.
In my opinion i think you should really concentrate on realism because it looks really good adn i think you'll be amazing at it but in the end it's really up to you thats just what i think.
Anywayz keep up the great work and keep drawing n practising

Great stuff! Good to see you are drawing a lot from observation. Get your hands on the Andrew Loomis books for perspective, color theory and all the other basic stuff you need to know. I can see that you struggle a little bit with form but I think that will be ok when you practice your perspective more. Keep it up.
