As I mentioned before, I really love your pen and ink work... would you mind giving a little insight as to your process with shading in ink? Particularly I'm interested in the types of inks you are using. I typically only work with whatever technical pen/markers I have around and my Prismacolor Marker gray tones for ink shading and it doesn't even come close to what you acheive.

    Thanks!

    Edit:

Just saw your post from the 11th that addresses my question directly. Looks like I just need more practice. Thanks!

good progress man. keep it up.
one thing about highlights: usually there's only 1 'super bright' highlight on a figure; which is the one closest to the primary lightsource. Every other highlight on your figure will be varying levels lighter than that highlight as they get further away from the primary lightsource. The reason i bring this up is because you seem to generally highlight the entire image with the same intensity, particularly in some of your b&w drawings. this breaks up your drawing a bit and takes away from a central focal point.

that being said. great bird studies, and monster designs. keep on rocking it.

Great stuff man. Really liking the new monster. I am looking forawrd to seeing him developed. Right now its like "hey, i have a tenticle for an arm" and then the rest of him doesnt really support that. I hope you start adding some design elements that will turn this thing from awesome, to BAD ASS. Really digging the head too.

Stylish, great stuff man. You've certainly got the imagination.
The main problem I have with creature/characters generally (not just yours which are great) is that they are often too contrived. You know when you observe anything living (you're birds are great) you see that every single minute part of it has an evolutionary purpose. Try and think why? what's this bit for? what's it made of? with every body part and detail of your creations even monsters and imaginative stuff, purpose still applies. Also try and think of balance and weight and the structures beneath.

Crazy Pills Thanks, I hope you find that technique useful

    climaxdesigns Thanks!

    TOOLED! Yes thanks, practicing everyday!

    Kaffinated Thank You!

GusTheRobot Thanks Mark, I totally see that now. Highlighting everything is a hard habit to break, never really considered lights sources before, but i know its an important subject that i need to improve on.

Jamesy Hey James, Thanks, Some of my marker work was done before I started this SB, but all the digi stuff is new.

nyssa Thank you for those kind comments!

Maerrick Thanks, birds are beautiful creatures, they are pleasure to paint.

Cole and Rhett Thanks, you both seem to be commenting on the same thing, and I think I understand what your saying, Its a hard balance creating an imaginary creature but retaining some purpose to elements of the design that help ground it to the real world. Most of the time I design things simply for the "cool" factor but never stop to consider why I add an element to a design.

InFlame Thank you for stopping by!

enthombed Hey man, thanks for looking again.

    Another creature sketch...

Thanks Quinn for the bit about the ink technique. I've been messing with it a little bit. I posted a quick shot at it earlier today. I really just went at it with my usual ink technique and then cleaned it up and enhanced it a little in photoshop. I am going to need to do one of two things though: 1) Find my 10, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, and 90% Prismacolor grays... or 2) Buy a new set.

Running with 20 and 70 alone is not cutting it as you can imagine.

Thought I'd comment on some of your paintings as well...

Your birds look awesome! Love the color. Actually your color is always brilliant, going back to your first postings. Re: the monster/creatures: They are absolutely horrifying looking (in a good way of course). I like the various distortions you play around with. It makes me feel like I'm listening to Tool or something.

On some of the creatures, whatever main distortion you are doing, doesn't always seem very planned and structured but I'm going to guess that it's because these are rough sketches. The finished work I've seen is great so I really am forcing a critique here. Hope you don't mind.

ehehe great SB! Defintely some Huante influence here! and your colour studies are looking great. One thing I've noticed with many of the greyscales you do is the fact that every surface seems to be highlighted to the same strength, so all have almost white highglights, which is making all the surfaces seem like they're made of the same material.. nothing seems to be dulled. A little more texure on some, along with less highglights would really bring the quality up a notch and make them more visually interesting to look at. Other than that niggle, though, really like your designs!
