    Going to the States

My brother had a baby so I'm off to the US for a couple weeks to visit. While there I have a chance to load up on all sorts of American stuff. So far I plan to get...

    1. some kind of slipper/shoes, like sketchers or some such, so I don't have to mess with laces everywhere I go.
    2. some DVD's, like Endless Sunshine in a Spotless Mind, and Being John Malkovich.
    3. Any paperback short story anthologies for my ELL students, the shorter the better for them.

I'm also going to load up on American junkfood, like rootbeer and such.

So does anyone have any suggestions for things I should buy?

You should get stuff that you wouldn't normally get in your country. When I moved here from the US, I was pretty bummed when I could not get what I usually bought.

Try getting something that has laces....like Stacy Adams or some sweet Converses. Also, maybe get some good deals on tablets, prostitutes (assuming you have bad pros), uhm.....You can probably pick up some racism while you're here and appreciate what you have in Slovakia.

Update: got the shoes, got got the books and films. I also got a ton of clothes for my son. I couldn't find any good t-shirts at Target (they usually have funny ones) but I'm going to go by a comic store tomorrow and find gifts for the Slovak Fam. I've also been taking photos of all the American food you can't get over there, to show students. Maybe I'll post them later, if anyone cares.

One good highlight, I got my aunt to draw some really nice sketches of my son.

It cracks me up how root beer is like this totally American thing, apparently. When I went to Sweden to visit my mom and step-dad (mom is American, step dad is Swedish) several years ago, I went to a local market, and they had this little "american food" endcap. Mostly it was a ton of rootbeer, mac n cheese, and marshmallow creme (wtf?).

My step-dad said he hated root beer and that it tasted like toothpaste to him (which I have heard from a lot of people abroad), which I really don't get.

No point to the story, I just find it interesting.
    Have fun in the US!

    -D
