OK, I've been being bugged a bit lately to start up another sketchbook so here it is. The sequel to the prequel of my art journey.
Sadly because of my lack of a scanner, this sketchbook is going to be mainly digital. If there's something I believe is exceptionally likable how ever I may post traditional drawings. I draw much more traditionally digitally which is a bit unfortunate.
I'll start with some older work that I did during my SB absence:

Some really cool work here, you have polished it up nicely but my biggest problem is I don't feel you spend enough time before rendering making sure that the lineart is solid. Also look at this piece, you see that the edges towards the bottom are all a bit fuzzy, now I know you don't want hard edges all over but in some places the colour seems to leak into the surrounding areas which can sort of flatten the image. Anyway you have improved so much since the last sb and I look forward to seeing how far you'll come. Cya around man.
Here's my entry for the airbrush.com 2008 paint off. Wish me luck!
It's mixed media (about 75% airbrush, 20% paintbrush, and 5% digital) but the Admin said that's fine as long as it was airbrushed at some stage in completion.
This really hurt my eyes and cramped up my hands...
The topic is paint anything the size of a quarter (for you foreigners a quarter is 24.6mm) or smaller. You can see the other entries here:
hey jake, some good stuff you got here man. i like the punk pengiun. some of the art u posted have really good lighting effects, like the mask on 6 picture on your first post. but then it goes flat down at the bottom, kinda bummed out on that part. i see you like drawing skulls, you might wanna try a real skull and that might boost up the figure on your skulls. i hope this helps
Miles_ Thanks dude. I know I have a lot of problems that I need to work out. I'm working on it. See you on MSN later?
Exquisite Beast Thanks. I do some studies and life drawing every week I just don't like to post them because they suck.
l0stinth0ughts Comment 1: Thanks. I LOVE skulls. I do a lot of stock ones but modified skulls are so much cooler! Comment 2: HAHA! errr... no. The quarter is real.
aah cool, then i like the way you modified the skulls that you have drawn, but although im a fan of skulls as well. damn, i really thought you did that quarter. i was almost astonished... haha
The quarter skull is bitchin', dude.
I like your steampunk penguin, but I'm not quite sure what the device on his back is supposed to be doing. I understand it's steampunk, but it's function isn't clear to me. I don't know if that's actualy a problem, but my brain got caught on it.
Sketchbook - Sketchronomicon!
Kannibal Klown is pretty wicked looking. I think you need to push the values in the teeth a bit to add a level of creepyasshitness along with his right eye.
eheh, I love skulls, I see I'm not the only one!
Great job, I like the stylized skulls but maybe a bit of life drawing from real skulls would help you a lot...but I think someone already mentioned that before. Anyways, love your airbrush skills dude, great works!
Sorry for the lack updates. I haven't done any digital painting in a while.
I finally got some jobs. I'll be painting an album cover for a black metal band called Vuotan, a tattoo design, some post apocalyptic concepts, and I'll be airbrushing a toilet seat lid (I'll paint anything if it'll stand still long enough ). Finally I'm gathering some income!
Some airbrush stuff that I was actually willing to get off my ass and photograph!
The first is a portrait of Mikael Åkerfeldt from the death metal band Opeth (I LOVE OPETH!). It's with auto air white and black on a black panel.
The second is some sort of demon like, scifi character thingy. I call him Lumpy. HoK white (because I ran out of SEM ) on a black panel.
Those airbrush things are really something, I love em. With the actual painting, Try flipping the image halfway in and you'll notice a lot of these are slightly askew. Anyway I got you some stars man, enjoy. Talk some other time on IM.
Man those airbrush ones are eyecandy! very nice man! Keep it up!
Great new start man...kannibal klown is great, & that Opeth tribute is kick ass... pretty adequate style you gave him... a ghost of perdition perhaps? Recently I've gotten an interest in finding about airbrushing.. do you have an sort of pointers or online resources I can check out? Keep on posting...
Well Gringo, I have a small mentorship/class on this site about airbrushing. Feel free to join if you want.
Okay well since you wanted a crit the biggest problem I have is that your characters arent really in any kind of perspective generally, and are all viewed from similar front on angles. Try doing some studies where you just move your point of view around a character to get some crazy angles. Just like with an environment characters can look better with a more interesting perspective. For a good example of figures in cool perspectives check out Goblinsharks sketchbook and use posemaniacs.com to mess around with crazy angles.
Keep it up man, bump!
sweet sb here man i really like your lighting and your colors throughout, i'd suggest a bit more anatomy studies, other than that keep it up. i wanna see more. especially the steampunk penguin.
To live is to create, to create is to live. Without art and music, I do not know how I would get by in my day to day life.
Jake, buddy. Your really skilled for only being 15. So young and so skilled. That doesn't excuse you from studies though. Post more, and lets see some studies.
Keep it up
Damn I need to move faster... she's due Monday!!!
Here's an awful video I made for school. We're sort of doing a pen pal thing only with videos. The people we are exchanging with live in Kibera which is in Kenya (Africa). God I hope I didn't scare any of them....
This is probably the worst video I've ever made... I seem fuckin stoned.
You can watch the rest of the videos from my class here: http://youtube.com/user/dolan150
And from Africa here: http://youtube.com/user/HotSunFilms
